Posted By Wil 1 year, 4 months ago in Arts & Entertainment

Since August is World Building Month and I've been hard at work on creating the setting for my new D&D campaign, I'll be detailing the hobby, discussing some well-known created worlds, and outlining some tools and tricks that modern worldbuilders can use to craft their own imaginary universes. I absolutely *love* that world-building is presented as a family activity. Raising creative kids FTW!

While my daughter's too young (2) to build a full-blown world just yet, she mercilessly monopolizes my Spore Creature Creator, and it's that sandboxy creativity aspect of it that holds her attention. I'll have to remember that August is world-building month, they'll come to look forward to this more than Christmas, mark my words!

I heard a recent interview on the news expressing concern that modern-day toys do not inspire creativity the way older ones did (they talk, animate, and are affiliated with existing tv shows and stories that encourage children to replay a memorized script vs. invent their own). Don't know how much of that is truth or just paranoia, but certainly an activity like creating a world would counter-act it. :)

I was trying to find a book I used to have when I was younger, basically a "build your own empire" book, with tips for inventing and managing your kingdom and its imaginary subjects. I couldn't find that, but I did find "Castle" another that captivated me as a child. It details the building of a castle, but it was the diagrams, labelling the different parts, that I still remember to this day.
