Comments for The politics of mockery: Obama fires back »
Posted By Wil 1 year, 4 months ago in News...This isn't to say the "celeb" ads are't working in some way. They may well be. But the GOP's previous virtuosity at political ridicule is more or less gone. The barbs have a sneering, defensive, high-school-lunchroom-hazing quality to them. Obama is proving a far less mockable figure than Kerry was.

As an Obama supporter, I'm happy to see that he and his campaign aren't just sitting back and letting the desperate McCain campaign's attacks go unanswered.

The GOP must know that they lose, and lose badly, on the issues that Americans care about, so it's only natural that they'd attempt to drag the debate into this territory. It's only a matter of time before they really crank up the racism, too, but as an American who loves what his country was before the Bush years, and hopes to see his country return to something he can be proud of, I can't help but feel like all this stupid, pointless, schoolyard mockery and endless discussion of completely meaningless issues isn't doing any of us any good at all.-

In all actuality, Obama is falling in the polls. He'll rise and fall again .. but the fact that he hasn't taken the commanding lead that the Democrats think is his by right will drive them more and more toward the racial arguments and taunts in this election.

Yea, I checked it out and he is leading in the same way kerry was leading bush. you check it out. who is the president? I'm not saying I am a big bush fan even though i was ignorant enough to vote for him. I'm saying i'm not going to vote for sheik obama. he has no experience, he is a bigger racist than i am, (and i am a HUGE racist) he is the anti-Christ.

In all actuality, Obama is very much NOT falling in the polls.
Reply
Real Clear Politics shows Obama's average lead as going from +2.1 on 8/2 to +2.3% on 8/4 to +2.8% on 8/5 to +3.5% today.
Rasmussen has Obama back at +1% and the only poll that shows Senator McCain leading is USA Today's which they should have updated by now, but for some reason are letting sit.
Not that it matters. Obama's support is slowly but steadily rising out of the +/-3.3% zone of a statistical tie and if it keeps going this way you can look for an average polling result of +5 to +7% Obama within a week or so.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/
And bluetexasvalley's remark about the electoral votes is very well put, Zogby's electoral map has not changed in some time.

Equally important are the Quinnipiac polls which indicate that Barack Obama has held a substantial and consistent lead in Pennsylvania. Say what you will about winning other states, but without Pennsylvania in his camp, John McCain will be sitting on the sidelines on January 20, 2009.

McCain might well have wanted to take the 'high road' with his campaign. But there is a sizable remnant of the Newt Gingrich style of 'Win At Any Cost' ethos.

This is because Neo-Conservatives see themselves as a sort of 'New Age' politician ... their new age philosophy is a retread of the old Soviet Style of Military Expansionism and Authoritarian Governance ... but Neo-Conservatives take pride in the fact that this philosophy has never been tried here in our nation.
This 'Grand Mission' they are on blinds them to all consequence. That's why they can compartmentalize 'Good' soldiers and 'Phoney' soldiers .... and how they can claim 'Fiscal Conservatism' while being the most profligate spending politicians our nation has ever known.
The discrepancies between their STATED beliefs and the EXECUTION of their mandate are so incongruous .... it's the very definition of absurd.-

Unfortunately, we will see a dead heat until the end. Our country finds great joy in dividing itself in half. I don't see anything different happening this time around until the day of the election. But I hope when it is done it's a clear majority. I seriously don't want this crap to go on forever. When it's over, can we please not talk for 2 full years on why they lost and how their campaign dropped the ball. We analyze to death each and every word spoken by each candidate until I wish they were speechless. What a process. The world must think we're crazy to listen.

It is perhaps THE most bizarre political process conceived by any democracy.
Reply
It obviously dates from the stagecoach days and town meetings [hence Mr McCain's fossilised obsession on the latter].
But today, when people almost anywhere can see the candidates speaking in close-up - the perspiration, the 5 o'clock shadow, the make-up and replay the nuances of every word, should they be obsessed enough to do so - the extraordinary wastefulness and cost of the current of sticking to these old formats makes no sense at all.
Honestly - hands-up! Is there anyone on this forum who really feels they need to hear one more word for or about either of them to make their minds up?-

I think people's minds are made up before any of the campaigning, and it's all just a formality, and all those people who say 'undecided' in those polls are really saying 'I don't want to say' or 'I plan on going shopping instead of voting'. Not that I know much about it, but as a passing observer, I'd say that McCain even has a shot despite his UNBELIEVABLY checkered past and political history[plus his miserable GOP debate performance and shi ite gaffes etc], bears this out to a degree*
Reply
I do want to hear more tho
I want to see the debates
should be a lot of fun
*to me we have an inexperienced younger candidate with a pretty clean record at the heighth of his abilities, whatever they may be, against an experienced older candidate past his prime with a gnarly record.
I'm not a fan of Obama, but at least he should be able to stand the rigors of office-shoot, look at what being prez does to people. it's like dog years. Look at Bush-or any prez, when the take office and when they leave it. Dorian Grey in reverse.
I'll probably vote for Paul, despite his age, because he's sharp as can be, so I'm not ageist, just aware that the old grey McCain ain't what he used to be

oBOMBa is a real idiot!!! Over inflate tires for better gas mileage!!! Har har har!!! how much will that help?? And your tires will wear out sooner!!!! And it takes about 8 gallons of oil to make a tire (I think this is correct) what a stumble, mumble, ah, um mumble ah ah hum dodo!!! How did he get here? This is another pc stunt by the idiotic democrats WHAT JERKS!!!
Reply
If he gets elected, watch the stock market tumble because will sell to avoid the new taxes. Already about 50% of the people pay virtually the taxes in this country (except for FICA if you work, sales tax unless you get an EBT card, no real estate taxes if you live in Gov't housing etc etc) He will be a disaster to the nth magnitude!!!-

In the future, when attempting to call your opponent an idiot, it might be best to refrain from saying "har har har".
Reply
As far as keeping your tires properly inflated (not "over-inflated") please look at this article from the seething hotbed of liberalism and well-known Democratic shill machine, NASCAR, titled "Tire Maintenance Key To Safety, Fuel Economy" and pay special attention to the words FUEL ECONOMY.
http://www.nascar.com/2006/auto/07/25/tires/
It took me about a minute to find it on line, but then I wasn't busy mis-quoting a politician or making baselessly dire predictions about the utter destruction of the entire country if the guy I don't like gets elected.
By all means, call the NASCAR drivers a bunch of jerks, what do they know about fuel economy, or driving or stuff.-

The poor gentleman was only trying to be thoughtful and doing his utmost to be expressive with his har har har - elegant even, though the !!! did rather counterpoint the measured gravity by adding a nuance of exaggeration and petulance and of slightly wanton indulgence.
But what if he had become truly hysterically didactic, perhaps flagrantly promiscuous, or obscenely indulgent in his response?
More fun, undoubtedly - but how seriously would you or I have taken him then, compared to that relatively restrained har har har? Or, G_d forbid, he might have added commas between them in addition to the !!! [???]
My honest opinion:
HRRRUMMPPH would have seemed like a more sincere, not to mention economical and eloquent formulation - perhaps to be repeated 3 times a day after meals as an anti-dyspeptic. -

Doom and gloom. Be very, very afraid...only the repugs can save you! Those tactics will not work in this election cycle. America has wised up, it took her a while, but she finally awoke with a bad taste in her mouth and her rear end hurting. Keep on with your dire predictions, Notradomus, some idiots will believe you, at least the 25 percenters who think Bush has done a fine job and hope McBush will continue to follow.

As I recall from 1992, a scrappy young governor from Arkansas, whom few people had ever heard of, seemed like a political neophyte who zigzagged up and down the polls from July through November. The only poll that mattered in 1992 was the one that sent Bill Clinton to the White House and GHW to Kennebunkport.
Reply
I suspect that in November, the Crawford Ranch Express will roll into Washington, pick up two defeated individuals (Bush and his offspring, McSameasbush) and drive off into the sunset, leaving President Obama to complete the people's business. I make no illusions about the fact that I did support Hillary Clinton, and would like to see her as VP. However, it is more important that we control our fomenting energy crisis, heal the wounds of our once great cities vis a vis repairing our nation's infrastructure, and bringing home our troops from an ill-conceived war. Wil is right, the people of this nation are sick of the broken politics in Washington and we have a chance to bring about significant change. Sounds a lot like that scrappy young governor from 92.-

Hey Airwickhead1944, you are a knucklehead. The democratic congress has failed the american people just as much as bush has. all politicians should be rounded up and shot. they are all corrupt liars and this country is in big trouble if the best we can come up with is sheik obama (the anti-Christ) or john mccain, who is at least a patriot and a war hero. God help us cause we need you now!

To those Republican Christians who claim Barack Obama is the ANTI-CHRIST. The ONLY World Leader in the last 50 years whose name was "666", was RONALD(6) WILSON(6) REAGAN(6), he was a Republican and Republican Christians loved him. Now these same Republican Christians engage in spreading Lies, Slander and bearing False Witness, against Barack Obama a fellow Christian, which is a SIN according to the Bible they claim to follow.
