(New York City) Lawyers for a group of New York taxpayers and lawmakers told a court in the Bronx Thursday that Gov. David Paterson acted illegally when he issued a directive ordering state agencies to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages.

    Governor Paterson acted within his rights as head of the state agencies which follow his oversight. New York law recognizes all marriages performed in other jurisdictions. Hence, gay marriages performed in Massachusetts and California are to be accepted just as if they were heterosexual marriages.
