Simply put, there is not enough financial aid available to help those who need to go back to school the most: single working mothers.

* Most financial aid programs were created for recent high school graduates, who attend college full-time and live on campus.
* Adult students are at a significant disadvantage because, for example, federally subsidized loans, are available only if they are enrolled at least half time.
* Most adult students have both work and family commitments and responsibilities, and, as such, are often only able to take only a single course at a time. Also, subsidized loans and most federal grants cannot be used towards non-credit courses.
* The limited amount of money available for college is a major barrier for members of the population already most vulnerable to poverty and, more importantly, their children.

We the undersigned demand that swift federal action be taken in order to assist hard-working moms afford the cost of college.
