Comments for Bush: ‘I don’t see America having problems.’ »
Posted By TechnologyExpert 1 year, 4 months ago in NewsThis evening, NBC interrupted its Olympics coverage of women’s gymnastics for an interview with President Bush. Last week, Bush gave a speech and expressed “deep concerns” with China’s “detention of political dissidents, human-rights advocates and religious activists.” Costas brought up this speech and asked about “America’s own problems.” Bush denied that America has any problems.

What a guy! He can look at a glass almost empty and see one overflowing with optimism. What a absolute, out-of-touch dope. He's either completely isolated from what's going on in his own country or he's lying through his little smirky smile. Take your pick... he's an inspiration to us all.

I don't think it's too much to ask that our roads and bridges be reasonably maintained. I don't think it's too much to ask that our food supply be safe and inspected. I don't think it's too much to ask for aid to be provided to disaster-stricken areas. I don;'t think it's too much to ask to have an aggressive public education agenda. I don't think it's too much to ask that the rights of everyone be protected. I don't think it's too much to ask that our nation choose a progressive energy policy over continually grabbing our ankles. I don't think it's too much to ask that our government abandon an interventionist foreign policy.
If the government is so gung-ho about bailing our large corporations that have made bad decisions, why is it so reluctant to bail out citizens that were arguably URGED, if not MISLEAD to make bad decisions?
I don't mind taxes, as long as they are spent responsibly on things valuable to the people.

Well, they're NOT and you should know that....And yes, we have placed CERTAIN reponsibilities in the hands of those in GOVERN...Certain things like security, education and etc. make sense, but for you to say that we bury our heads in the sand and NOT be interventionalist with regards to foreign policy is careless and idiotic....And this coming from the liberals who claim to be human rights activists.....Make up your mind, dude....You're either for human rights or your not....
And inflating your tires and offering tune-ups as a possible solution to domestic drilling is "grabbing your ankles".....Drilling here and now until we can get these progressive energy sources in place, is a good plan and one your "Messiah" candidate doesn't endorse....With Russia recently going after a main oil line that BP owns which supplies much of the oil to Turkey and other middle eastern countries, we cannot afford to not drill here and ween ourselves off of foreign oil...Conservation is great but it's not going to get us off foreign oil anytime soon....
And I'm a big non-supporter of bailing out these large corporations....banks specifically, who were lending to people they really shouldn't be...But to say that the citizens were misled? Again, playing the victim card here...People know if they make 30-40 grand a year and their looking at $500,000 house, they shouldn't even talk to a lender....It's just common sense...I think it's the fault of both the banks and the citizens...But the government isn't in place to bail people or coporation out....That should be OUR responsibility....
Plain and simple....-

Show me where Obama "offered" this as a solution to domestic drilling. Show me where he said this is what we should do instead of drilling. He was asked by someone what could be done in the short term that would help. He gave proper inflation and tune-ups as examples in conserving. Nice try, spinner. BTW, he's not against domestic drilling. He just thinks they should drill/develop the 70 million acres already available. -

Actually, Obama has signed on with a compromise measure that would allow offshore drilling off the shores of East coast and Eastern Gulf states, outside a 50-mile perimeter. Again, the problem is even though the oil is there, all the operating derrecks are currently booked and it will take years to build new ones.
Yes, many (not all) borrowers were misled with rosy promises of an ever-expanding house market ("You'll be able to easily re-finance before the ARM adjusts!") and with downright fraudulent appraisals leading people to over-borrow. Lenders weren't even asking for proof of employment and banks and brokers were aggressively marketing to borrowers they KNEW were high-risk. -

High gas prices are to an extent caused by rampart speculation. The poor pay a greater percentage of their income in fuel costs which go to the profits of oil companies and their stock holders. If you recall, recently Exonn/Mobil posted the highest profit of any corporation ever. Where do you think that money came from?
Reply
Cuts in federal funding to parks, social programs and such to cover the cost of providing tax cuts for the wealthy and tax credits for big business have to be made up at the state and local level. The lower classes again pay a higher percentage of their income in sales taxes and in lottery participation.
Cuts to federal education assistance like Pell grants and student loan programs make higher education less and less accessible to lower classes, effectively limiting their future earning power (again, usually to pay for rich-friendly policies).
Wages for the middle-to-lower classes have largely been stagnant, even though the stock market itself has seen steady growth. Companies are forced to reduce or outsource labor and lower benefits in order to maintain a growth profile attractive to investors.
You cannot deny that the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' has grown alarmingly wide. Supply-side economics was supposed to have a 'trickle-down' effect that has NOT materialized, quite the opposite. The middle class is being squeezed out of existence.-

Reagan cut taxes for the rich from 70% to around 20% and we have witnessed the fallout. He shifted the burden of payment from those who derive the greatest benefit to the children of the children of those who bear the greatest burden. We have moved from the greatest creditor nation to the greatest debtor nation, all at the benefit of the idle rich.

Here is a news story worth reading:
http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN3046385720080730
Some quotes from the article:
“Critics of the offshore drilling plan noted that the Energy Department released data this week showing that U.S. exports of finished petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel, soared to 1.592 million barrels per day in May.
Exports were equal to about half the 3.204 million barrels a day in petroleum products that the United States imported during May.”
“In May, U.S. oil companies shipped 183,000 barrels of gasoline a day out of the country, even as Americans saw prices at the pump steadily rise.”
“May's gasoline exports were almost double year-earlier levels, the most for May since 1945 when America was providing motor fuel to other countries toward the end of World War II.”
“U.S. exports of diesel fuel reached 444,000 barrels a day in May, a record for any month and four times higher than a year ago.”
“Jet fuel exports of 76,000 barrels a day in May were the second-highest level ever for the month and almost quadruple shipments from a year earlier.”

tt's not government planning or policies that fix a poor economy, it's entrepreneurship....It's free-market economics that work....And guess where that money comes from with regards to start-ups and small businesses? Yep! You guessed it, the RICH ! You tax the hell outta them, like Osama is proposing, where do you think they will send their money instead ? Perhaps overseas? Who knows, but they won't keep it here where it really need to be...And isn't money in your own pocket better than in the pockets of politicians? Did you notice the stimulus checks actually worked in energizing the economy ? It was short-term, mind you, but it did work...When people keep more money, they pump more of that into the economy....The government can't do that.....They spend our money on worthless programs and waste more than anybody...I mean, they've bankrupted Social Security and look at Welfare....What program has the governement had their hands in that actually WAS successful?
I'm just saying that "we the people" know what's right and where are money should go...I mean, do you think you know what's best for your money or does the governement know what's best for YOUR money?

Dude. The economy doesn't cycle all on its own. It's not regular like a clock. Certain factors DO affect it.
Reply
Your housing market example? Think about what EVERYONE--even conservatives--considers to be the largest cause of the rise in foreclosures:
BAD MORTGAGES, caused by DEREGULATION.
People who were never offered a way to buy those houses before, were buying them under terrible terms designed to make lenders lots of quick cash. Then those lenders could sell off the notes before they were defaulted upon.
Even the Fed--even Greenspan and Bernanke--have recently admitted that lenders need more regulation.
Regulation helps keep "entrepreneurship," as you call it, from destroying the economy. Entrepreneurship, left unregulated, will cause more failures like the foreclosure crisis. Someone will figure out that they can make lots of money by offering garbage loans, then selling the assets. It's similar to the junk-bond crisis of 15 years ago, but now in the housing market. It's DUMB finance, and your "entrepreneurs" should be supervised so they can't get us into this kind of mess again.
_____
The stimulus checks? Really? That's an example you want to use?
Even you say it caused only a short-term bump. That kind of pass-out-more-money BS is what got us into the enormous debt we now face. We will have to pay off that $10 trillion some day. Meanwhile, paying the interest alone accounts for something like one sixth of the annual budget.
The stimulus checks, deregulation of business under the idea that making money benefits everyone, making borrowing easier, etc. Can't you see it's all the same shell game? It ALL--if done without oversight--creates short-term bumps while wreaking havoc in the long run.
Really, FU92. Think before you write crap like that above. -

Wow that is some serious chit, voting him in and he ranks right up there with many of the worlds most dangerous leaders, many who are behind bars today or hiding in a neutral country. How did the country allow this to happen, not once but twice and from the sounds of it possibly for a third term with a Bush wannabe! Are Americans that daft? Did anyone actually watch the aforementioned interview? I did, and it was awkward in several places. I think Bush was attempting to sound optimistic in a "we will overcome" mentality, but it sounded more like he was in complete denial of America' current troubles. He reiterated the need for China to open itself to religious tolerance, but it came across like he was more concerned with evangelism than dealing with the issues of his own country.
Reply
The man just is not a good public speaker, at least when it comes to quick thinking. The entire interview wasn't a complete waste, but I think he bungles what he intends to say a lot of the time, and every other minute the viewer is left wondering what planet he's on.
It was uncomfortable to watch.-
