"Reaching the goal of a 10 percent improvement would save more than 100 million gallons of fuel per year in GM vehicles in the U.S. alone."

"The take-home message here is: It's a big deal," Yang said.

Although I agree that most of the energy from the burning of a hydrocarbon fuel is lost through heat I think that there would be ways of recapturing the energy by other ways. The idea of using an air conditioning system to capture heat and create a gas under pressure to run a turbine to creat electricity would make a hybrid a more logical alternative. I am not to sure to what degree the termoelectronic device is able to recapture energy and at what speed it does. Although electronic systems seem to be the thing of the present sometimes a mechanical system would be just as efficient, if the are going to surrround the exhaust system with these electronic devices they would likely be just as far ahead to surround it with an evaporator coil. Another point is that electronic devices work on temperature differences which means on really hot days the difference would be less which would produce less energy although maybe only by a small amount.
I am not against this idea but think that others could be more efficient.
If one thinks how much energy it would take to cool the exhaust and radiator system of a car down to 70 degrees using an air conditioning system that is the energy that we are talking of trying to recapture by using an non electronic system.
Sorry for ranting on about this but to me the idea seems simple and yet there is no work being done on it by anyone and that sort of irritates me when we all ready use air condiotioning systems on vehicles.

We use TE devices at work, This is a very simple way to recapture some energy, TEs will output electricity which could simply be used to supplement the alternator, thus putting less demand on the engine. In the end, save gas. Everything helps.

Add this to inflating your tires and you should be able to drive for free. Well, maybe down hill.
