this is a very detailed account of the potential for this trigger event spinning out of control.

as it happens, bush and cheney are so removed from reality that they could actually believe escalation would be a good thing. cheney basically said so today.
our only hope is that the leading military officers either talk them out of it, or refuse to carry out those orders. -

There has been no confirmation of the amount of civilians deaths in S. Ossetia...it is widely understood now, however that Russia's claims of 1,500-2,000 are grossly exaggerated.
Although I guess the writer is addressing the geo-political implications and such, much of which I agree with, he simply chose not to explore the genocide and war crimes being commited by Russian troops as well as the infamous "irregular" fighters. Raping women, lighting people's livestock and homes on fire, a tragic display of the horrors of war.
