I have a sense of humor, but I found some of the words on the list offensive. In context, they were meant to be humorous, but instead I just saw them as insulting. The assumption here is that being gay is equated to being nerdy or awkward. I realize it is satire, but how loud would the reply have been if the n-word were used and a black child were incapable of spelling it? For those reasons, I am sorry, but I am unable to prop this one, ind.

Didn't the article indicate the kid could spell the word (s) in question because they were things he was called at school, not because he was gay? Along with nerd, etc. etc., it seemed to be a listing of generic high school insults...

Anyway, I'm sorry you found it offensive david, it was not my intention to offend.

Quoting the article: “It is our goal to not upset the children or remind them of their status as social outcasts,” said Beth Riley, director of the Spelling Bee. “That’s why you’ll never see words like ‘dork,’ ‘gayboy,’ ‘nerd,’ ‘wedgie,’ or ‘loser’ in a spelling bee.

"gay boy"? ... is that a word? Why not throw out some other derogatory amalgamation words in that same lot. "That's why you will never see words like 'dorkmonkey', 'snotwalrus', and 'futureDnDplayer". hahha.
Eitherway, poor kid. -
