This was the first question that I had when the Russians invaded Georgian territory (outside of South Ossetia or Abkhazia). Why were the neo-con cheerleaders so against this when they set the pattern by going into Iraq?

Besides, the US (and NATO) are setting up a bad precedent by increasing the size of NATO and by installing missile batteries in the new members. Besides, what happened to the "peace dividend" that was supposed to result from the fall of the Soviet Union?-

The neo-con cheerleaders should be FOR Russia invading Georgia?

Putin the KGB man screwed up the peace dividend. Don't trust him anywhere beyond range of those missiles. NATO now needs to be expanded to protect free countries like Georgia and the Ukraine.
I wouldn't worry about new missiles. Perfectly far away and long standing ICBMs are quite capable of destroying huge sections of distant lands.

Of the 140 wars the U.S. has fought on foreign soil I can think of only one where we were attacked (Japan at Pearl Harbor, a territory then). So much for us only fighting wars based on attacks on our soil. Also 9-11 would seem an attack but these days it is hard to pin down the attackers since they have no country.

Almost all of the 140 wars were to protect our interests such as trade, oil, allies and business interests. So much for purely moral reasons.
Of course we consider ourselves right and the other guys wrong. However I'm not sure the majority of Russians really support the invasion of Georgia.
Mexico, Cuba and Grenada? What a poor choice by Russia. All combined would last about 1 week if they attacked us. It was Kennedy who reacted to one attempt by Russia to do that by blockading Russian ships from setting up missiles. They removed their missiles back then as a result.
It's a good thing they didn't dismantle NATO. If Russia was harmless they wouldn't be invading any independent country, but they are back at it under the communist KGB man Putin. Shades of Russia rolling over eastern Europe after WWII. I remember they were stopped at Greece, but they luckily remained free. I'm not sure that NATO has the guts anymore though to resist any incursions on their member states. I would guess that if Georgia was in NATO Russia would have stayed out.
I think the Ukraine is next and has been sent a message by Russia - Don't get too friendly with the west or try to join NATO. I think we need a new NATO which will surround Russia and will immediately respond to any invasion of a member state. What good is it to sit there and just complain without reacting? Just as when Hitler rolled over Europe while everyone wrung their hands and tried to make treaties with him (England and Russia). I recall Chamberlain wanted to talk to Hitler - right! Certainly we haven't learned the lessons of history. Oh both sides need to show restraint. Sure - Georgia needs to stop complaining about the tanks, troops and air strikes. Russia needs to stop complaining about Georgia's defending itself and wanting to remain independent. -
