Posted By Spadecaller 1 year, 2 months ago in NewsThe mainstream media is shy to report about the extreme religious beliefs that guide GOP Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's politics. The Bible, not science dictates her policy on energy and the environment.

From before the time of the crusades to the rise of the Third Reich, and up to the present, the name of Jesus Christ has been used to endorse despots, political candidates, policies, and wars.

And now we have the wacky GOP congresswoman, Michele Backmann, from Minnesota joining in this grand tradition of ignorance and religious propaganda. Imagine if she was an Obama supporter. Would it be all over mainstream media? Would the oil companies silence the news media, as they are doing today?-

Interestingly enough, a very well educated Theologian (which Michele Backmann is not) says exactly the opposite:

Quite possibly one of the best scholarly papers dealing with caretaking for God's great earth (if you believe that kind of thing). -

Somebody does not understand the part in the Bible where God says, "Those who destroy the Earth shall be destroyed."
Reply
I guess it was me cause obviously Michelle is such a devout Christian she would never purposely misinterpret or falsely use the word of God.

If you feel you are depraved in this country maybe it's just because you are lazy and keep looking for handouts.

This is the land of opportunity you know.
Sometimes you have to get up off your lazy butt and go looking for it though.

I remember when the Jehova Witnesses used to knock on my door... they all started out with the same line, "have you heard the good news?"
I never thought it would follow with "Jesus suppports offshore oil drilling."-

I have to agree with globalwarmer, that was worth a chuckle. I sort of consider it sad when any political person has to fall back on religion to support anything. It's sort of like asking a religious person for permission to go to war, and that gets done on occasion as well.

Could anyone feel the love of Christ in her words? How did she manage to set up the strawman and instantly twist it into christian-right codes, and fit it all into a soundbite?

The frame is this: We say God approves of our ideas. Therefore, if you oppose our ideas you oppose God.
I have a good idea where this clever lie originated.-

Or, " we've already been saved, there's no way we can screw it up now". Go ahead destroy the Earth, Christ has a big heart , he'll forgive you.

I've brought this up before, back when Propeller 2.0 was still Netscape, to point out why religion and politics do not mix well. This kind of thought pattern makes any kind of compromise impossible, and compromise is the key to a functioning democratic government.

Once you posit an anthropomorphic , interventionist deity...well, the sky's the limit (so to speak).
Reply
That is, if your god looks just like you, and is set up as a cosmic micromanager, punctiliously involved in your every-every--well, it's a small leap to believe that that deity shares your political convictions.
How could he (and of course it's always a he) care about you, truly be on your side, and NOT? -

We're really on our own. The Great Experiment of Life is to test our soul's worth in difficult situations. If we measure it in man's egotistical accomplishments, then we have failed the experiment lest the lesson is learned. Unfortunately, one person can affect the lives of millions with one egotistically implemented selfish mistake. (Georgia comes to mind here.)

Those that choose not to keep religion and poliics separate lack moral integrity and respect for those of different faiths and beliefs.

I remember when former Attorney General Ashcroft was appointed; for me, that was proof that we had an administration that would use anything, including God, to divide and control the American people. How sad; it worked. The damage that has been done to our country and its regard for people of different faiths has been profound. -

Markmawn, above: don't you think the soul, as an idea, is an artifact of faith?
Reply
In any case, if it's transcendent, as it must be, how can it be tested--have or not have "worth?"
I know: you're using "soul" as a stand-in for that deepest most ineffable part of ourselves....
...which makes it transcendent. Ergo..... -

So, I'm curious about how people feel on this issue. I mean, it isn't just the Christofascists running their suck, it's most of the world's religions. Plus, did anybody see the Propeller article on Pluto? There were several people there talking about how Pluto being classified as a dwarf planet rather than a planet is crazy because Pluto has "always" been a planet.

My point is that when we look through the lens of dogma (and that applies to ANY dogma) we are sure to find ourselves always looking over our shoulders to the problems and hatreds of the past rather than towards the solutions and possibilities of the future.
That seems to me to be where this Representative is heading. -

And, as you suggest, the "system" has to be constantly guarded, which gives a subscriber thereto little time (assuming there's even the inclination) to "look ahead."-

That's exactly right, but we must always be on guard against that in ourselves lest we become that which we hate. Perhaps an example is in order.

I found myself, the other day, arguing with someone about a subject about which I haven't looked into in years. Never mind the subject, it doesn't matter. What matters is that this person was up to date on the subject and I was not. So, I said repeatedly and, in the end rather vehemently, that the other person was wrong, wrong, wrong and furthermore an idiot for being wrong.
Well, I went back later because I had a nagging suspicion that the person in question may, indeed, have been right. She isn't known for standing her ground when she's wrong (and no it wasn't my wife). As it turns out, I was right, based on what I knew. But, more recent information showed that, in fact, she was right and I was wrong. So, (and this is embarrassing, but better that then the alternative) I had to go back, beg her pardon and take what was coming to me.
So, it was enlightening. Dogma (ANY dogma) is a problem. We must be on guard as you say.
