From before the time of the crusades to the rise of the Third Reich, and up to the present, the name of Jesus Christ has been used to endorse despots, political candidates, policies, and wars.

And now we have the wacky GOP congresswoman, Michele Backmann, from Minnesota joining in this grand tradition of ignorance and religious propaganda. Imagine if she was an Obama supporter. Would it be all over mainstream media? Would the oil companies silence the news media, as they are doing today?-

Interestingly enough, a very well educated Theologian (which Michele Backmann is not) says exactly the opposite:

Spade -- I am one who believes that religious beliefs should influence one's view on moral issues. That having been said, I do not see offshore drilling as a moral issue.
Reply
When I first saw the lead-up stuff to this, I thought she sounded wacky. But after listening to the video spiel, it sounds to me like she used the religious reference as a throw-in. It has little relationship to her main point, which is a pretty standard partisan-type argument. So while I agree with your main point that religion shouldn't be used to justify all sorts of political behavior, I'm not sure this is an example of that.

Somebody does not understand the part in the Bible where God says, "Those who destroy the Earth shall be destroyed."
Reply
I guess it was me cause obviously Michelle is such a devout Christian she would never purposely misinterpret or falsely use the word of God.

If you feel you are depraved in this country maybe it's just because you are lazy and keep looking for handouts.

This is the land of opportunity you know.
Sometimes you have to get up off your lazy butt and go looking for it though.

I remember when the Jehova Witnesses used to knock on my door... they all started out with the same line, "have you heard the good news?"
I never thought it would follow with "Jesus suppports offshore oil drilling."-

I have to agree with globalwarmer, that was worth a chuckle. I sort of consider it sad when any political person has to fall back on religion to support anything. It's sort of like asking a religious person for permission to go to war, and that gets done on occasion as well.

Could anyone feel the love of Christ in her words? How did she manage to set up the strawman and instantly twist it into christian-right codes, and fit it all into a soundbite?

The frame is this: We say God approves of our ideas. Therefore, if you oppose our ideas you oppose God.
I have a good idea where this clever lie originated.-

"And the nations were enraged, and your wrath came and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear your name, the small and great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth." Revelation 11:18
Who's destroying he earth?-

Yeah thats right , I used scripture. Its for the God fearing who think they can do whatever they want or think man can't destroy the earth, apparently the Bible says otherwise. Besides I thought Jesus came to save our souls, not the planet.

well I don't believe man can destroy the earth. we are but a minor passing phase in the earth's history. Like a Ziggy comic [I think] we are a minor infestation. [the comic was one planet saying to the other planet 'I think I have people' and the second planet saying 'Oh yeah? Is it contagious?']
Reply
we may not be able to destroy the earth, or even leave much of a mark, but we can certainly mess it up for human and animal habitation and make it an unpleasant and dangerous place to live. [already have to a great degree- the Love Canal comes to mind, and the air in that valley I forget the name of in California [San Fernando maybe?]
That's a good bible quote BTW. I had forgotten that one-

Different translations use the word "ruin" instead of "destroy". Of course man can't make the earth disappear but they can ruin it for all living things and if man launched all of its weapons, we could destroy the earth by lunch time and I'm pretty sure that would leave a mark. There's another scripture that says the Earth will stand until time indefinite but I don't remember where.

I've brought this up before, back when Propeller 2.0 was still Netscape, to point out why religion and politics do not mix well. This kind of thought pattern makes any kind of compromise impossible, and compromise is the key to a functioning democratic government.

Once you posit an anthropomorphic , interventionist deity...well, the sky's the limit (so to speak).
Reply
That is, if your god looks just like you, and is set up as a cosmic micromanager, punctiliously involved in your every-every--well, it's a small leap to believe that that deity shares your political convictions.
How could he (and of course it's always a he) care about you, truly be on your side, and NOT? -

We're really on our own. The Great Experiment of Life is to test our soul's worth in difficult situations. If we measure it in man's egotistical accomplishments, then we have failed the experiment lest the lesson is learned. Unfortunately, one person can affect the lives of millions with one egotistically implemented selfish mistake. (Georgia comes to mind here.)

Those that choose not to keep religion and poliics separate lack moral integrity and respect for those of different faiths and beliefs.

I remember when former Attorney General Ashcroft was appointed; for me, that was proof that we had an administration that would use anything, including God, to divide and control the American people. How sad; it worked. The damage that has been done to our country and its regard for people of different faiths has been profound. -

Markmawn, above: don't you think the soul, as an idea, is an artifact of faith?
Reply
In any case, if it's transcendent, as it must be, how can it be tested--have or not have "worth?"
I know: you're using "soul" as a stand-in for that deepest most ineffable part of ourselves....

So, I'm curious about how people feel on this issue. I mean, it isn't just the Christofascists running their suck, it's most of the world's religions. Plus, did anybody see the Propeller article on Pluto? There were several people there talking about how Pluto being classified as a dwarf planet rather than a planet is crazy because Pluto has "always" been a planet.

My point is that when we look through the lens of dogma (and that applies to ANY dogma) we are sure to find ourselves always looking over our shoulders to the problems and hatreds of the past rather than towards the solutions and possibilities of the future.
That seems to me to be where this Representative is heading. -

That's exactly right, but we must always be on guard against that in ourselves lest we become that which we hate. Perhaps an example is in order.

I found myself, the other day, arguing with someone about a subject about which I haven't looked into in years. Never mind the subject, it doesn't matter. What matters is that this person was up to date on the subject and I was not. So, I said repeatedly and, in the end rather vehemently, that the other person was wrong, wrong, wrong and furthermore an idiot for being wrong.
Well, I went back later because I had a nagging suspicion that the person in question may, indeed, have been right. She isn't known for standing her ground when she's wrong (and no it wasn't my wife). As it turns out, I was right, based on what I knew. But, more recent information showed that, in fact, she was right and I was wrong. So, (and this is embarrassing, but better that then the alternative) I had to go back, beg her pardon and take what was coming to me.
So, it was enlightening. Dogma (ANY dogma) is a problem. We must be on guard as you say.

Misrepresenting the BIBLE for there own purposes is nothing new...
The RIGHT have always used religion to chip away at American Civil Liberties - Post 9/11 they were able to undue years of advances.
Now we have our WAR-TIME high gas prices (Think there might be a connection)
We have the Oil Congloms shouting they need to drill of the shores of America. (Don't forget our President's family is a member of that club)
I could have sworn just a few years ago WE as a country did not want to drill off-shore. Even if we do - we don't have the ability to refine any more crude than we already refine
Oh yeah - and a huge percentage of our AMERICAN PRODUCED OIL IS SOLD TO OTHER COUNTRIES.
Yes Jesus loves me - the bible tells me so - unless I'm against off-shore drilling - NOT MY GOD -

God she's at it again. Michelle Obama's district is very conservative. Just google and youtube Michelle Bachmann (I posted some articles on Michelle Bachmann and her husband.). If you do a search of her on youtube you can see her speak at a church in the Twin Cities when she first ran for office and everything since then.

There are some in her district that are trying to get the word out. They started a website when she first ran for office and keep updating. it. -

Were those behind the Inquisitions Republicans? If they could be time transported to today maybe they might be left of the Religious Right by a tad.
Remember this: The Oil boys said that the price of Oil was up because there was a shortage of Refining Capacity. So it matters not how much SUCCESSFUL drilling happens, why? Because if the refineries are at capacity, more raw oil wouldn't solve the shortage.
And Ms Bachmann sounds like she just might be an escapee from the lunatic *******, either that or she is your average Republican. -

Don't forget the Republican Jesus also supports the preemptive nuking of Iran as mentioned repeatedly on FoxNews and Propeller.

The Republican Jesus want to kill 100s of thousands of children by blowing their skin off and watching the survivors die a horrible painful death from radiation poisoning.
Jesus wants to mass murder children according to the Conservatives.
George W Bush is a Fundamentalist Christian who said many times during his term he agrees with the Fundamentalist Christian "goals" for America...
Isn't it beauty of death when Church and State get together?
Now these same evil freaks want to destroy the one small area laid asaide not to sunder in the U.S, even though they have ACRE AAFTER ACRE AFTER ACRE that they can legally drill on, but instead must grab this one region as a final goody bag for the same cronies and oil companies that publicly admitted to paying millions to crackpot lying "scientists" to deny there is global warming.
Same as*h*les.

The worst part is that these multi-national corporations and giant oil companies are NOT LOYAL TO AMERICA in any way.
Reply
They aren't going to hire American workers, they aren't going to pay taxes back to America for their enormous profits, and worst of all they aren't even going to SELL THE OIL TO AMERICA if Asia can pay more (and Asia CAN, thanks to the ultra-conservatives breaking the American economy...)
Then these Republican supporting companies will hide the money stolen from American recources into secret bank accounts in Dubai were no American law can touch them (and many have moved their main offices to for precisely that reason.)
ANYONE SUPPORTING THIS DRILLING IN PROTECTED AREAS IS A FOOL OR PAID BY THE BIG OIL MULTI-NATIONALS and certainly aren't American "patriots" but rather traitors to our Democracy. -
