From before the time of the crusades to the rise of the Third Reich, and up to the present, the name of Jesus Christ has been used to endorse despots, political candidates, policies, and wars.

And now we have the wacky GOP congresswoman, Michele Backmann, from Minnesota joining in this grand tradition of ignorance and religious propaganda. Imagine if she was an Obama supporter. Would it be all over mainstream media? Would the oil companies silence the news media, as they are doing today?

    Althugh I do not care to get into theological controversies, I agree with the excellent information that you referenced as well as Larry Rasmussen's perspective on cherishing the sanctity of this earth resources.

      Spade -- I am one who believes that religious beliefs should influence one's view on moral issues. That having been said, I do not see offshore drilling as a moral issue.
      
      When I first saw the lead-up stuff to this, I thought she sounded wacky. But after listening to the video spiel, it sounds to me like she used the religious reference as a throw-in. It has little relationship to her main point, which is a pretty standard partisan-type argument. So while I agree with your main point that religion shouldn't be used to justify all sorts of political behavior, I'm not sure this is an example of that.

  Somebody does not understand the part in the Bible where God says, "Those who destroy the Earth shall be destroyed."
  
  I guess it was me cause obviously Michelle is such a devout Christian she would never purposely misinterpret or falsely use the word of God.

      Watch CNN`s special series entitled `God`s Warrior`s`.
      
      Very interesting expose on different extremes or types of preachers in America who work in self-proclaimed Christian churches, yet who are completely different in attitude.
      
      Hagee, basically wants America to work for Israel in order to speed up God`s plan for Armageddon because God is taking too long on his/her own.
      Another guy was even further to the right.
      Another guy said that for every time the Bible discussed the `sin` of homosexuality, it discusses the sins of greed and gluttony over seven times. He says that every Christian who does not work seven times as hard to fight greed and gluttony as they do to fight homosexuality is cherry picking God. In other words, they are not true Christians.
      The last guy is a very conservative Christian being against same-sex marriage and against abortion, but 110% pro-environment because God is 110% pro-environment. This preacher quoted the Bible as saying God will destroy those who destroy the environment.

        the destroy the earth reference from the Bible is in Revelations and does not have anything to do with the religion of environmentalism. It refers to those who are wicked and evil and have rejected Christ. It refers to the end of times. Rev 11:18
