A gene hunt among more than 4,000 British, Irish and American patients suffering from bipolar disorder has turned up two genes that put new emphasis on a possible cause of the disease.

This has to be my top "unintentionally funny headline of the year" so far. If you're not familiar with "Life on Mars" or "Ashes to Ashes", this will explain it:

Why not call it what "it" is ??? My wifes first "nervous" breakdown was caused by having a handicapped child...her second "nervous" breakdown was caused because her father molested her...her third "nervous" breakdown was diagnosed as Bi-Polar" disorder??? The shrinks, and htere were many over the years- (40). never once called it what it was...
      ----------------------------S C H I Z O F R EN I A-------------------------------------------
And--it is in the genes---therefor "it" can not be cured..at least not until we can
reoair genes.....soo- the shrinks lie to us..and the world suffers because of the shrinks inablility to cope with "it"...

        HMMace,

To suggest that it is "in the genes" and is therefore incurable is not accurate. There are MANY genetic disorders than can be easily treated.

Understanding the genetic factors that predispose an individual to either of these disorders will provide a HUGE advance in our ability to treat them. The identification of specific genes is the first step in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that are responsible. An understanding of the molecular mechanisms will, in turn, identify specific therapeutic targets. With these targets in sight, drugs that act on the targets can be rationally developed.

Another consequence of a knowledge of the gene and molecular mechanisms responsible will lead to a better diagnosis than one based on symptoms - ans answer the question of the relationship between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia (if there is one).
