    To suggest that it is "in the genes" and is therefore incurable is not accurate. There are MANY genetic disorders than can be easily treated.

    Understanding the genetic factors that predispose an individual to either of these disorders will provide a HUGE advance in our ability to treat them. The identification of specific genes is the first step in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that are responsible. An understanding of the molecular mechanisms will, in turn, identify specific therapeutic targets. With these targets in sight, drugs that act on the targets can be rationally developed.

    Another consequence of a knowledge of the gene and molecular mechanisms responsible will lead to a better diagnosis than one based on symptoms - ans answer the question of the relationship between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia (if there is one).
