Man says 9-foot tapeworm came from undercooked salmon salad »
Posted By TimALoftis 2 years ago in NewsAnthony Franz had started to eat healthy, but the salmon salad he ordered for lunch from Shaw's Crab House in Chicago wasn't the best choice, according to a lawsuit filed Monday. Franz says he became violently ill for several days after eating that salad and later "passed a 9-foot tapeworm."
According to a pathologist quoted in the court papers, the mother of all tapeworms undoubtedly had its origins in "undercooked fish, such as salmon." The lawsuit against Shaw's Crab House and its parent company, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, claims the restaurant's staff was negligent in serving him undercooked fish. Franz, who was not available for comment, is seeking $100,000 for his pain, suffering, lost time from work and "lost enjoyment of life."

If you watch any cooking shows AT ALL, you know that the current "thing" is barely

cooked meat, fish, etc. If it actually looks done, it's "overcooked" according to the chefs and
other food gurus. I have seen pork that didn't look cooked to me- a great way to become
really ill, fish that I wouldn't eat on a bet and beef that looked like it would bite you back!
I don't like things so overcooked til they are dry but really -- fish, meat, chicken etc.
should be COOKED UNTIL DONE -

I guess I am wondering how a parasitic worm grew to 9 foot so quickly? He said he was sick within a day so why did it take 9 feet worth of growth before the tapeworm was discovered? Something sounds shady.

Check out his link........information on human tapeworms, which, by the way, can survive 30 years in the intestine, and grow to 30 feet! OMG!

a few DAYS later he passed a 9 foot tapeworm? No way, it would have not grown that quickly in 9 days. Parasites can come from alot of different places there is no way to prove where it came from, except it could not have come from that restaurant! Not unless he ate a 9 foot tapeworm from there.

Wouldn't it have been CHEWED if it was eaten in his salad?!

So he is basically claiming he ate a 9' worm without chewing, threw up for days but somehow the worm made it through, and then it passed comepletely through without getting digested.
Being sick must have caused him to pass a tapeworm he had. -

Like they said before; how can you prove where it came from. It is unfortunate this has happened to him and I certainly don't want anything like this to happen to me since I am a big fan of fish, but it is a risk you take with food like this. Any living creature you cook and put into your mouth has a risk of something like this or worse. It's also unfortunate that the restaurant will have this lawsuit against them especially when something like this could happen to you at home when you buy a piece of fish from the supermarket. It is just something that is not uncommon in fish.

have parasitic worms, even in the US. a 9 foot tape worm does take longer than a few days to get that big -- they attach themselves to the inside wall of the intestine
and live off the proteins from your body, they start out really small and just get
bigger and bigger. They multiply by laying their tiny eggs around the anal opening,
thus causing itching. When scratched, these microscopic eggs can then unknowingly be transferred to the mouth and swallowed. The newborns then
attach to the intestine and the cycle continues on and on. They definitely can reach
very long lengths through time, causing a multitude of medical problems
starting with vitamin deficiency, malnutrition and low immunity--and everything
that stems from those conditions. Obviously they are sucking the life right out of
you!! I suggest a regular vermifuge for EVERYONE. I personally drink chapparal
tea, but there are over the counter vermifuge treatments, ask your pharmacist
or doctor about it. Doctors don't test for parasitic infestestations unless you ask them to, and many people who just don't feel good very often, and the doctor says
he can't find any thing wrong--you know--he keeps sending you for tests that you have to pay for and prescribes all kinds of drugs with no effect---many of these
problems can be eliminated by ridding the body of parasitic worms.

This guy is just out for a fast buck. Fish Tapeworms come from FRESHWATER fish! Salmon isn't! Sure there are parasites that you can get from SALTWATER fish, but not Tapes! A 9 footer in several days? Let's call Guiness and Ripley's! I cook my freshwater fish well, my saltwater a bit undercooked. I love Sushi (AVOID RAW HALIBUT..IT DOES HAVE PARASITES), and raw Oysters. I've never had a problem.

First, you can get tapeworms from wild salmon. It's common. Second, you eat the eggs in the undercooked fish. Then the tapeworms grow inside you. In order to get that long he had tapeworm eggs inside him years earlier. He didn't get it from the salad. a few days earlier. Generally you'll only pass a worm if you've not been eating much (not feeding it) and/or ate a lot of fiber (to flush it out) or had major intestinal distress from something else. It hurts when you pass them when they rip off your intestinal wall. You will get some bad cramping, and that's it. He just has to take the same tapeworm medication they give to cats and dogs. The tapeworms look like thin linguini.

you are right about getting the tapeworms from salmon, and about the eggs

in undercooked fish. You can take the same medication for dogs and cats
but really you can get it at your pharmacy. Tapeworms, pinworms, roundworms,
and all the other parasites that infest our pets are easily transmitted to us --
but I have to tell you that it does not hurt to pass a tapeworm or any other worm
because they do NOT let go until they are dead. They must be killed with a
vermicidal medication. Fiber won't do it

Wow, this guy's definitely trying to pull one over. It's not possible to ingest D. dendriticum eggs and in a whopping 48 hours pass 3 meters of adult worm. He's going to be the laughing stock of Chicago if he actually tries to take this to trial. It's elementary biology.

Tape worms break off in sections, unless you get the head, the thing continues to grow, I agree it would take longer for the worm to reach 9 feet.. I saw one show where somehow the eggs developed in the brain and begin to come out the ladys head, this can be fatal
