I don't know if it would be called polygamy. Humans (and all of the great apes) are naturally more likely to have more than one mate at any one time. This goes more for the male of the species than the female, but that is an evolutionary strategy, not a social one.

From an evolutionary standpoint it makes more sense to have a larger core family unit than just one father and one mother. For instance, is a child more or less likely to continue on the family line if the only father dies? This would be less likely in general.-

There was a time when I thought that the family line was going to die with my husband (as he is the only son of an only son).
Well, surprise!!!!
We are the minority that don't fit into the general rule. We have 3 boys.
I guess there has to always be someone(s) who go "against the grain" ;-) .
