it was beautiful! Yes, there can be beauty in tragedy too. You've done a
masterful job putting this together. Many thanks.
I have loved Pavane for a Dead Princess for years. I have a CD by
Julian Bream and the Cremona String Quartet.

It's terrifying, it's frightening. In what world do we live? On one hand, we have Olympics Games, and on an other hand we speak about Cold War....Thanks for letting us knowing these horrible facts! I am wondering what J F Kennedy would do now? Remarkable video...

As long as people only listen to MSM and never try to think for themselves or make any effort to verify what they see and hear, the will NEVER learn.

Our society is so self-absorbed that everyone that is not poor doesn't pay any attention to what goes on around them because they don't care. And the poor may not have the resources to research or educate themselves in the truth, or they have no resources to do anything about any of it.
I know that is a cynical view, but that is how I see it these days ....-

Re: Cynical?
Unless you are one of those operating on a hair-trigger, or the
continual knee-jerk reaction, OR you are entranced by the idea
of world domination without any thought to the cost or ethics of
such designs.........................You'd be a fool NOT to be cynical.
I'll be happy as a clam the day world affairs warrant any type of
optimism - but we are decidedly not there yet.
Welcome to the club, friend.

The Nuclear Submarines to me represent the greatest threat. We can destroy the world between us. All for the greed and pride of having the most. That is what it boils down to.
Reply
We know where their missile bases are and they know where ours are. Don't think they are targeted for destruction first?
The time is near, all the signs are pointing to it. We have allowed the wealthy sociopaths to lead us into the ever closing trap of greed and nationalistic false righteousness. Worldwide the countries of the world believe they are the righteous ones, while the other nations are wrong.
Welcome to the road to armageddon.
While we allow our leaders to draw us ever closer, we shudder and recoil at the reality of the path we are on. While denying it will happen, we know deep down it is on the way.
Good post Spadecaller.
I just listened to the song "Eve of Destruction" again last night. More pertinent now than it was then. -

Despite the prospects, which appear gloomy, I believe we are still best served by making an effort to share our concerns, our hopes, and even our grave disappointments with each other. Perhaps that is our greatest triumph; sharing among each other despite the outcome, whatever it may be. It is easier to have faith in something greater than ourselves knowing its outcome, but to work toward an unselfish goal in union with others is the essence of the truest faith. Blind faith is not so blind.

out in Anaheim. I well remember them coming home later than usual
because they went shopping together for supplies. They were pooling
their knowledge on what we should have on-hand..........if.
Water - canned goods - medical supplies.
It almost seems naive - to think any of the stuff in the boxes on
our kitchen table would have helped us, if the worst scenario had
actually taken place. Might as well get under a desk and cover
your heads! If something were to start now - using nukes?
My best advice would be to kiss your posterior goodbye.
You know - I say that with all the cynicism I mentioned above
in my reply to bubba2. So this old 59 year old will kiss off sooner
than expected. But then I think about my husband - my CHILD -
my pets..................ALL those things that I have accepted some
responsibility for their welfare for - that I love and care for and
won't be ABLE to protect. What God-awful fate might await them?
Don't these bastards have children and grandchildren - don't
they LOVE anybody? NOTHING will protect any of us if it starts.
They must not let it begin - there is no such thing as a little war
in this 21st Century - not if they use nukes. -

I think the most important thing required to prevent another Cold War (or an extremely hot one) is diplomacy. One of the major candidates has advocated talks without pre-conditions. Some say this gives artificial status to not-so-pleasant leaders or dictators - but really, those leaders already have as much status as they can have in their own countries.
Reply
By talking to enemy leaders without pre-conditions you acknowledge the fact that all men were created equal. I think this sets an immediate stage for negotiations that achieve benefits for both sides. Every world leader should have the same ideals - a better life for his own people and country - and forging alliances that will accomplish for the same for other countries.
Unless a deal is win-win, the loser will always be looking for a way out. So if you START by forcing the enemy into what they consider a loss, there can be no trust, since they will always be seeking to recuperate that loss.-

into a CORNER.
Anybody ever seen a cornered rat? They do not wave a white flag -
they FIGHT. Our leaders are poking and prodding and cornering a
dangerous adversary BY CHOICE - it is NOT absolutely necessary
right now. This conflict is contrived. But WHY? I just find it so hard
to believe that any sane person would WANT war. And I do mean
WANT - our foreign policy has been conducted no differently than
going out and beating the bushes LOOKING for one.
Trying to get involved in conflict and war? Does that sound sane?

EVER SINCE the demise of a soviet Russia, the pressure has been mounting to erode its borders this way and that, and the concern i have is the ever self propagating juggernaut of greed which is an apparent hallmark of the present administration. We have all witnessed some of the ploys of the present political family to hold onto the reins, and the absurd possibility rises its very ugly head that a war just might provide those emergency definitions for the prolongation of office.I mean, for certain interests, the present projected spin-offs from a threatened war with Russia must necessitate a change of underwear... -

This reminds me of a conversation I had 8.5 years ago with my team members while having lunch together. Normally during work hours politics is taboo. The four of us were really close having worked on numerous projects together and began discussing the upcoming election. We took turns discussing our concerns and hopes. Two of the guys were very religious and republicans. One was an independent and I a democrat. I listened as they gave their input, as I have tremendous respect for all of them. As I sat there they looked at me and asked me what I thought would happen. This is what I said. "If Bush is elected, he will bring this country and the world to its knees. He will forever change the way we are perceived in the world and create battle lines in our election process. He will do whatever he has to, to achieve the directives of those who are placing him in power. Lastly I said, his actions could result in the US being the target of nuclear missiles." I hope I'm wrong...

Two years ago when people who believed that Bush was responsible for crimes against humanity and yet insisted that it would be better for the nation not to impeach him or charge him, I also responded similarly. I remember saying that if you find the captain of the ship is incompetent, dangerous, and lacking in good judgment, do you wait to you reach port before replacing him?
We have not reached port and our ship is taking on water. The Bush syndicate has brought us into treacherous waters and it will not be easy to find our way home, even if we throw him and his gang overboard. -

George Will (ugh) had a column in the Sunday paper.
"John McCain may gain as invasion enhances fear factor" was the heading.
The last few lines?
"Until Russian tanks rolled into Georgia, it seemed that not even the Democratic Party could lose this election. But it might if McCain can make it turn on the question of who is ornery enough to give Putin a convincing, deterring telephone call at 3 a.m."
So - this little confab of nations on the brink in the Caucasus could be helpful to the GOP, and their candidate? Funny how things like that happen -
isn't it?
How long ago was it that Rove devised the campaign strategy of - making the war the issue to win the election. Sadly, too many people bought into his rhetoric - which was as shallow as his candidate.
George Will had so many comments in his article that showed the disdain he has toward the American people and he wasn't talking about the left - he was generalizing! The big deal in McCain's recent
critique of Obama is that Obama WANTS our troops to fail. Yet McCains supporters and advisors - Will - Gramm, etc. show no remorse talking about American's as if they were lower than bugs! All said proudly
while they wrap themselves in the flag, patriotism,
nationalism and SUPERIORITY. I cannot find common ground with these people or their ideology. -

Sure, whatever you say!!! Because everyone knows how honorable the right wing nuts are huh?
I mean they wouldn't start a war for oil would they? They wouldn't vote down medical care for poor children, while wanting to ban abortion as against God's will, would they?
How about saying the war we are fighting is Ok while the war the Russians are starting is not. That wouldn't be a typical right wing nut would it?
Try this. All war is evil, at some point. For their must be the evil agressor who seeks to control and dominate another, for their own profit.
Now bring that to the scale of what Bush has brought the world to with his insanity, and those who will oppose him with their insanity.
And you have the insane making decisions that the sane know are wrong but are helpless to stop.
Now quite honestly I don't care for the extreme right or left. Because they are the ones who bring war.
So goosestep off and spread your propaganda to those who swallow that swill.
I'll have none of it.

Your logic is self contradictory. Because you choose to remain uninformed and then try to pass it off as prudence is revealed by your blatant contempt for progressives.
If your openmindedness and prudence was more than phony pretense, you would have not characterized this as "left wing hype," which simply reveals the fallacy of your predudice prior to discovering the facts.
Protham, this one is for YOU:
“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation.” -
