Watching the War of the Worlds film would have been unthinkable unless I read the book.
I actually watched the Dune miniseries before reading the book because I'd never heard of it.
War and Peace? If someone couldn't handle it as a book, not a chance in hell they can sit through a proper film of it. That would be a ten hour film for a 1600 page book. The film would have to occasionally break into twenty minutes of Tolstoy preaching at the audience, as well.

Actually, for the most part you learn better when you read then when you view a film. Its about getting somebody to analyze... a few exceptions exist, I had an ex-girlfriend who learned better from films, but for the most part you're best off reading.

A fantastic author that the article didn't mention is Victor Hugo, author of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserebles. Tolstoy, particularly in War and Peace, came off preachy to me.
Twain was a brilliant satirist. Always worth a read.
I'm surprised that Frank Herbert wasn't included in the Sci Fi section, he wrote one of the best Sci Fi sagas I've ever read in the Dune series. It got into the dangers of mixing government and religion.
Becoming a literary genius does not involve shortcuts. You have to have the right way of learning, for instance. A person who can't learn as well from reading as they do from hearing won't become one, but they may very well become a brilliant historian. I lucked out and I'm extremely good at both of those types of learning. I do admit that my visual memory is poor at best, I probably can't tell you the color of walls in my room right now (its dark and I can't remember).
