Posted By Spadecaller 1 year, 4 months ago in Arts & EntertainmentThis Spadecaller video presents a montage of fine artwork and paintings that augment Dylan’s haunting lyrics and song. Among the painters represented are: Van Gogh, Bouguereau, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Sargent, and Waterhouse. At the time of its recording and release (1982) Dylan was in what has been called his "Christianity Phase" , as the song does contain powerful allusions to Jesus, faith, and spirituality. It also stands as a secular work;Rolling Stone magazine described it as a "mature update" of Dylan's 1964 song Chimes of Freedom.

Every Grain of Sand was written by Bob Dylan. Initially, it was released on his album Shot of Love (1982), then included on the compilations Biograph and The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. In addition the song was used on the soundtrack for the 1997 film Another Day In Paradise and was also performed at the funeral of Johnny Cash, in 2003, by Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow.

LYRICS: "Every Grain of Sand"
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair.
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand.
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand.
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face.
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other time it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand. -

I made this one among my favorites. I'll go back and look at it many times, because it speaks to my aging in a way that I can relate to, & feel comforted by it. Makes me smile. :) I'm sure others will come away with different interpretations, but that's mine.

I want to try making a video too. I've got a piece of music for which there is no video, anywhere. It's kind of an odd piece, slightly disjointed maybe and perhaps not the easiest choice - but it's one that calls to me.
Maybe I should just start with something a little less ambitious, lol ... I know it's not as easy as it looks. You do such great work. -

Thanks. Yes, my first attempt was not as challenging as this one would have been. This is my 76th video that I have posted on YouTube. I believe my first one was a Nat King Cole song. I enjoy making them and I would also suggest to start off with a song you like that is not going to be overwhelming. Good luck! -

I thoroughly enjoyed that! I haven't heard that song in years, and your choice of artwork couldn't have been better. I only wish I could make a video of that quality. Sadly though, video isn't my forte. It seems to be yours though. Thanks for sharing it here.
