Comments for Secret lottery formula? WI couple won't tell as they claim 3rd and 4th jackpots »

Posted By ameliog 1 year, 3 months ago in Business & Finance

A Wisconsin woman and her accountant husband who claims he's developed a formula for lottery picks have each claimed $350,000 jackpots--twice. Verlyn and Judith Adamson claimed two $350,000 jackpots on Monday because each held a winning ticket in the state SuperCash drawing last Saturday. They didn't mention at the time that they also held two more of the winning tickets.

Verlyn Adamson said earlier in the week that he's a big fan of math puzzles. He claims he developed a formula for lottery picks, but his winnings have been small until now. The couple's lawyer, Scott Thompson, said the Adamsons are "exploring patent protection" for the equation. (By the way, the Wisconsin state lottery seems rife with statistical oddities, as you can see in the WISN video below.)

I am a sceptic by nature. Lol.
What are the odds of so many people winning in this particular Ma and Pa store? Even if two million tickets are sold yearly what are the odds of one of their tickets winning the jack-pot?

I suspect a little faul play! The store collects a huge bonus everytime someone wins from this store.

The owner of this Ma and Pa store should maybe be investigated along with the lottery commission! LOL.

The chance of this store selling a winning jackpot lottery ticket once is fine and well, but over and over again?
They even have T Shirts printed because they have so many jack-pot wins?
Mathematically the odds are against this happening.

They now have a winner that has a proven method that can beat the lottery?
I smell scam all over this plus free advertising so that this couple can sell their formula for millions more! lol. All they need do is apply for a patent? Lol.
    Talk about greed! lol.

Our prisons are full of crooked CEO's and bankers...why not Lottery officials?
Time to take a closer look at this store for sureLol.

Sure the chances of a partical person winding 4 times is unlikely, but the chances of SOMEONE winding 4 times is most lilkely no worse than 50%.

A secret formula to pick lottery numbers and win...yeah, right...i'll put that one next to the formula of how to make millions without working. There is no luck involved in this. These are just random events, though statistically very low in probability, just random events...or maybe not and they can actually talk to the spirits and see the future...yeah, that's it, THAT'S THE TICKET!

It's disgusting that any state uses lotteries to finance projects that should be paid by all residents through graduated income taxes. We should all be ashamed that our governments exploit poor and ignorant people like this. And shame on Newsday for shilling for the lottery scam.

Lotteries are a secret tax on the poor. The people who can least afford it are being suckered into paying for state projects such as education, highways, and the like, while more wealthy, better educated people get off scott free, paying nothing. That's the real fraud, not some phoney "system" someone claims they have for winning.

Be smart and boycott state lotteries. Lotteries are destructive. They prey on people who don't understand the odds against winning. They take money that people need for necessities. They are NOT harmless. They are truly for LOSERS and voters should end them. States should not be in this sleazy, exploitative business.

To the person who says that a state lottery is "taking advantage of the poor" let me say this, these "poor" people are adults with the right to do what they want to do. That is until people like you, who for some reason feel that they know better what these "poor" people need to do with their money. What, are they not as educated as you? Should they just sit down and let people like you tell them what is best for them. I get so sick of people like you. You are all alike, here poor people let me tell you what is best for you, let me take care of you because we all know that you can't take care of yourself. Better yet just sit there and let us take care of you using the tax money of others. People like you are the ones who use these "poor" people for your own political purposes.

Up with the Nanny State! So you think the State must protect poor "LOSERS" from throwing away their meager incomes? If people are so simple-minded that they need protection from their own actions, they certainly shouldn’t be voting, holding public office, serving on juries, teaching, or anything else that might affect someone else. The lottery isn’t some confidence scheme – everyone knows the odds of losing are great. By suggesting a boycott, you recognize that lotteries are totally voluntary, hence they are not a “tax” and do not “take” money from anyone.

If Wisconsin's state lottery is truly based on a randon generator it should be impossible for any math wizard to beat. I would take a look to see if any of their winnings are going to a Wisconsin lottery official.

I am here to tell you that the Lotteries say the money is going to schools , and it is. But, there is one big misconception, it is a shell game. The schools were receiving money from 2 different sources, for ex. 1 was $5 a student and the other was $7 a student. When the lottery started paying into schools they paid $5 a student. When the $5 came in they took the $5 out of the $7 and funneled it into another project. So schools are ending up with the same money they began with, but the politicians can legally say the money is going to the schools so they can sleep at night, and everyone feels better about playing it. As for me I work for a school and of course I take a chance every now and then, but generally I prefer to take my money directly to the students. It can be amazing to see a child get a new pencil at the beginning of the year, and know they that really needed it. Times are tough around here and it takes all that some families have to provide shoes or even clothes for their kids to go to school. And no I don't live in a ghetto, I'm not complaining, I'm just explaining how come it seems that schools should have more money, seeing as they get lottery money, and they don't have it.

Seems pretty simple to me as far as the store with all the winning numbers. They randomly had a couple of high-profile winners, which caused a lot of people to start buying tix from them. The number of peeps buying from them compared to other stores was mathematically significant enough that they hit a couple more winners, and it just snowballed from there. 2 million tix is about 5500 a day for every day of the year. That seems pretty gaudy for a mom and pop store.

Here's what they LIKELY did: he came up with some numbers he liked by using a formula, AND then he bought a second ticket with those same exact numbers on them, and possibly a third or fourth ticket so that way if his numbers did come up as winners, he would also hold the second, third and fourth winning tickets as well. That's just plain smart, especially if you believe there are more multiple winning tickets than there are single tickets. It wouldn't matter when you bought them or where, but if your numbers come up then you simply hold more than one winning ticket. He also likely looked at the numbers that win the most since most states post the most winning numbers on their website. Now if all of you who play the lottery had numbers you really liked, buy a second ticket with those numbers on it and good luck. My guess is he will not be successful at getting a patent for something where luck matters most.

The odds are that they played a slew of numbers using a technique that I believe is called "wheeling" them. Your system tells you what numbers have the highest statistical probability of hitting (which should be totally random) and then you play multiple combinations of the numbers. Therefore, you end up with multiple tickets that have many numbers in common. It seems like what happened is that they probably played some number of tickets (a couple thousand?) all on the same draw and several of the numbers in their wheel hit netting them $1.4M pre-tax in this case. ($350K times 4 tickets.) Had their "system" for picking the numbers with the highest probability been wrong, they would be out a decent sum of money. In any case, good for them. Hopefully they will do something positive with the money instead of just blowing it like so many others that come into a windfall of cash.

Mathematically you can increase your odds, but only very minimally. The rest is just plain dumb luck.

However, your odds increase with how often you play, again only very minimally.

they bought four different tickets with the same numbers. no formula here, just the same set of winning numbers. dumb when you think about it.

This is why some people buy multiple tickets of the same number. This is not relavent to the article posted. I witnessed someone who won a modest amount of money once purchasing multiple tickets with the same number. I used to work in a convienience store years ago.

They purchased 5 dollars worth of 1 dollar tickets for the numbers to win in the order they requested. They purchased 5 dollars worth of 50 cent tickets for the numbers to win in any order. The winning numbers were in the order they requested. So therefore they had 15 winning tickets. The pay outs on these tickets was more for the in order ones than the any order ones. Because of the way purchased the paying tickets were not withing the range of having to be reported, hence no taxes.

I meant dumb to have all this press coverage. Obviously if every winning ticket earned the top prize, there is some logic in buying more than 1 identical ticket. Given that the tickets were all for the same drawing and bought at 4 different stores (according to press reports), there is really no conclusion to be drawn about any formula or place of purchase based on this one outcome.

The way I read this article, this couple has 4 winning tickets for the SAME lottery. Now why would they have 4 tickets with the same winnings numbers on them? Come on people, this story is 100% tabloid sensationalism.

Next story is on the merits of Astrology!

Get a copyright, OK and charge for people to puchase the publication. I can't see a patent for a random number generator which would give these greedy people rights to anyone's winnings that came up with their own similar formula. There have been thousands who have tried formula's and probably some who are the same. They need to keep their winnings and keep their secret a secret and if they keep winning, more power to them.
The only possible formula would be simulation of the one that generates the number in the first place, and they shouldn't have that information

Yes, I worked with random number generators (they are actually pseudo-random) back in the 1980s, and once you figured out the algorithm, it was pretty easy to predict the next"winning" number. I figured they are quite a bit more sophisticated now, but maybe not.

I doubt that luck has anything to do with these Jackpot winners.

I think that you are on the right track, memestryker -- It seems significant that they apparently have won the SAME lottery repeatedly. It suggests that there is a problem with the pseudorandom number generation in that lottery's system.

There was a incident in the 90's (I think) involving Keno in NJ, and a Nevada Gaming Control Board employee named Ronald Harris. Harris discovered a weakness in the pseudorandom algorithm which enabled him (as I recall) to choose future numbers based on past numbers.

Harris was a smart guy, but he did go to prison. He might be able to help the State of WI track down the source of this anomaly. :-)

"Wheeling" would not explain winning the Jackpot on 4 seperate tickets. Unless, they were wheeling on a jackpot that has been rolling over and was extremely large, and then hit 5 of 6 numbers on 4 tickets - that may be possible - but that is an awefully big payout for hitting 5 of 6. Unless it was 4 of 5 and the powerball X 4. Who knows, the way it is written makes it all sound like BULL.

If they do have a way of picking the winning numbers good, ( share the wealth). but what i would like to know is if the lotto money goes to all these things such as road maintance & so on, why are our taxes going up every year for these things? The average family cant live on one income nowdays & we have so many hands in our pockets by the time we do get our pay checks over $300. is gone in taxes right off the top. I have played the lotto & never even won my money back, so i dont play( times are hard).

Lottery winnings are supposed to go to the school systems. Unfortunately, our politicians have figured out that they can reduce the tax(ed) budgets and compensate with the lottery income. Instead of being a bonus, the lottery has become a "voluntary" tax system to supplement the general fund of the states that participate.

I think it's nice that they figured out how to win, but any further jackpots they take are greed induced. It's time for them to move on.

Or it's time for the lottery to find a more complex random number generating system that isn't as easy to crack. I have no problem with lotteries. It's fun to occasionally buy a $1 ticket when the winnings are high, and talk about it with friends and family. It's entertainment that costs much less than a movie and popcorn.

I have to agree with you I have a daughter and two grandchildren and we live in Pa. First the wages suck, second she is a single mother never married works full time and very hard. She gets a whole 75/every other week from a dead beat dad and the older daughter gets nothing and has seen nothing in her life from her dad. The state sees one extra dollar or two and BOOM down goes any help she gets. Now talk about school clothes. Yeah right they are not ghetto by no means but it costs you would think they would help buy the clothes or give a discount to the mothers who work these fulltime jobs at low pay work their butts of get up early and take good care of their kids. My daughter is one of them. She doesn't lay around and sleep all day. Up at five and starts her day. Papa and Nana help as much as we can we take them every other weekend.(we aren't spring chickens) and we get very upset if we know they are low on food between paydays we help with clothes etc. and it is because she is doing her very best. Sometimes she is slow paying us back but she is doing it on her own. I am very very proud of her. She came out of an abusive 6 yr relationship had the one father put in jail and has a psa against him but the main thing is where is all our money going?

However, there is a lot of truth to the notion of numerology and the studying of which numbers come up most often, which ones are "due" to pop up, etc., and this is probably what they're doing. Go pick up a numerology "how-to" guide and actually read it. It DOES work.

Got to admit thou I bought two last week and won One hundred dollars got so nervous went to Post Office made a copy and went to the next town to cash it in since we have only 400 people in town. Then I came home and gave it to hubby. Had just come home from Dallas had gone to see my sisters with my mom and gave it to hubby who is very sick. Told him I had a surprise. Could have been shady and kept it Not that I didn't think about it. but since I had gotten to have a vacation he deserved some kindness......But most people would have bought another hundred dollars in tickets and most likely lost.. That is what happens in the area where I live.. The poor keep scratchin and spending and loosing..

Before my state {Tennessee} voted in the lottery a few years back I would cross the state line into Kentucky. I remember one week there were 2 winners on the power ball. Well the store that sells the winning ticket gets a cut. The ones store owner in Kentucky got $2,000 for selling the winner and the store owner in Michigan got like $250,000 for selling his.
I cannot remember which state got which so it may be backwards but I do remember the one owner complaining about his low amount compared to the other store owner.
But some states give you a % of the winning total and others give you a flat rate.
That is when all the signs go up "WINNING JACKPOT SOLD HERE" to entice players to go there to buy their tickets. And people would actually drive past 10 places and go 20 miles to buy at that store. LOL

They simply bought 4 tickets with the same numbers...that's not luck, that's stupid. One ticket would have won it all as it would have been less winning tickets. I don't think these people have any mathematical skills at all if they think that increases their chances.

Given that the tickets were all for the same drawing and bought at 4 different stores (according to press reports), there is really no conclusion to be drawn about any formula or place of purchase based on this one outcome.

The only problem with winning the lottery on a constant I see would be the taxes one has to pay for those winnings. Secretly, you ever notice people with a "system" or "formula" for winning these lotteries, NEVER divulge their methods. Mainly because it's usually a gamble and they've just found a way on hitting the jackpots.

Though I wouldn't mind winning the lottery, I'm not certain I'd fancy the burdens and price which comes with those winnings.
