Susan Eisenhower Leaves the GOP for Good, Citing McCain's "Rove-Style" Politics »

Posted By Neophile 10 months, 2 weeks ago in News

"My decision came at the end of last week when it was demonstrated to the nation that McCain and this Bush White House have learned little in the last five years. They mishandled what became a crisis in the Caucusus, and this has undermined U.S. national security. At the same time, the McCain camp appears to be comfortable with running an unworthy Karl Rove–style political campaign. Will the McCain operation, and its sponsors, do anything to win?"

    Neo,

    This is a great find!

It brings back the nostalgia of the Eisenhower years, both as the commander of our forces in the European Theater during WWII and our distinguished President.

Susan has framed the GOP of her grandfather's time in a succinct manner, clearly defining the things that made her grandfather a great leader. GOP in those days put a lot of value on the principles of democracy, fiscal responsibility and the sanctity of our Constitution - all of which were progressively trashed by the last three Republican Presidents, selling their souls to the religious Right Wing and sacrificing their principles and integrity at the feet of the pagan godless of greed and power.

A fruit does not fall far from the tree!

Brava, Susan! I admire your courage of conviction and recognizing the vicious instrument the GOP has come to be!

    Peace and Blessings!

The GOP of today is rotten to its core and is beyond repair or redemption. People like Susan Collins, Chuck Hagel, Grassley, etc. should seriously consider forming another party based upon the noble principles that the old Republican Party was founded upon.

I read an interesting Blog a while back from 2 of Goldwater's daughters that echoed the same sentiments. I can't seem to find it now. If anyone stumbles on it please let me know.

The first time I heard the term "Military Industrial Complex" was from one of Eisenhower's speeches revived by the movie JFK. I like Ike. And Ike's granddaughter sounds pretty cool too.

Good riddance Susan. You did the right thing by leaving liars and manipulators who would not rule out anything, including illegal vote tampering to win the election. This is documented fact from 2000 and 2004.

All the DECENT conservatives are jumping ship because of the filth they are being spoon fed. There are still some decent ones who remember the pride and honest values of the GOP, not the phonies we see today. These people aren't real republicans, it started around the time of Reagan, and it's gone downhill every election since.

The true conservatives can no more stand these neocons than anyone else with a conscience. She may be abandoning a sinking ship, but she is no rat.

Susan Eisenhower has wisely moved out of the Republican party and landed squarely where she and most Americans will eventually find themselves. As both parties move further toward their extreme fringes, they should become less relevant. Though neither will recognize their deficiencies, they must accept that most Americans do not approve of Karl Rove tactics.

She's got to be kidding! Ike was always featured on TV playing golf, and he and his party's sweep of the White House, House, and Senate resulted in their supernatural best friend, God, being added to our Pledge and to our paper money.

In the meantime, lynchings of innocent black people were always in the news, and separate, lesser facilities for black people were ubiquitous. Anyone who thinks the 1950s were happy days, wasn't there.

"All the DECENT conservatives are jumping ship..." as n2n stated, it's about time. This country needs to pull back from allowing these "neonazi-cons" control of our foreign and domestic policies. We have enough damage to undo.

With NOTHING to offer but negative ads, McCain is doomed as a candidate.

Both parties have been going down the tubes for many years now. With partisan bickering and maneuvering to the point that nothing gets done. Rare are the times when the parties will think of what is good for the country instead of what is good for the party. They both fashion legislation in such a manner to contradict the legislation of the other party and thwart compromise of any sort.

With the rise of the neocons and the ties to the radical right, in my estimation I put the Republicans as the worst of this time. But having said that I'm also not happy at all with the actions that have been taken by the Democrats. Almost every bill that they have crafted has been done in such a way that even moderate Republicans couldn't cross the line and support it. This is mostly done by setting the costs of the programs too high for any real fiscal conservative to support. Look to S CHIP, and the Veterans Benefit bills as an example.

I was very disappointed in John McCain for airing negative/attack ads during the first week of the Olympics. The games and even its commercials should be uplifting and fill you with pride. To Obama's credit he ran ads during the Olympics that did not even bring up his opponent - either by name or otherwise.

Shame on you, Senator McCain...you and your campaign should know better!

Her grandfather was right about the "military-industrial complex" that we are now living in. Good for her! Neither of these parties is doing what they are supposed to be doing to protect OUR rights,OUR country, or OUR people. The Libertarians have the best ideas, but not enough big $$$ to get them access to the mainstream media on a steady basis. Both the Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin and are bankrupt ethically and morally.

I'm reading it,but not buying it.The truth of the matter is Susan Eisenhower is a nobody, and never will be,but she will obtain a minutes of fame as a Obama groupy.Don't you just love how she mimics Michelle Obamas low life phrase"For The First Time in my Adult Life."I know you marxist, and soon to be marxist just love it.Well I have found it to be useful at times, it beats sticking your finger down your throat to induce pucking.

The U.S. spends as much on "defense" as the next 14 countries under us COMBINED. Much of this "defense" spending is on weaponry that is more suited to "Cold War" realities than to the realities we NOW face. Much of it is also spent on the defense of countries other than our own, and much is spent on intervening in other countries' business. We are over-extending ourselves and it is starting to affect us here at home. Ivan Eland's book, "The Empire Has No Clothes" is a much more literate and thorough critique of the U.S. policies that have led us to this point than I could ever hope to be able to articulate. Anyone who has any interest in these matters, be they liberals or conservatives, owe it to themselves to check it out.

                  Actually,
All this story represents is another example of a staunch conservative who, while dedicating his life and time to providing a better country for his children and grandchildren, forgets to ask about their (communist-indoctrinated) friends they've been hang'n out with. All to late they discover their offspring have been drinking from the liberal kool-aid punch bowl and, invariably, brainwashed. It's so sad that this bitch has lost her moral compass her patriarch worked so hard to establish in our once great country.

Wish her well. As Susan correctly points out, political attitides are often part of one's upbring and general outlook on life. Personally I was raised with a belief in fiscal prudence, action based on reality rather than ideology, and a conviction that government was to be an ally, rather than a boss or "the problem". Certainly the current Repub Administration (and some prior ones) , if judged by their actions, have pretty well decided that these are not really things that they value. Nor do the Dems for the most part.

But it also seems to me that the political climate is such that any position by one major party necessarily produces a position from the other that is exactly opposed. It's almost as if both of them believe that no truth exists outside certain rhetorical boundaries. This is anti-intellectualism at its worst; and IMHO we are embracing it when we should be avoiding it.
