The big question, who will be making the decisions - will Biden actually be the president?

Such a question sort of destroys the argument that Obama is arrogant, huh? Nah, Biden won't be the next Cheney, he just won't be afraid to speak his mind.

That's how Obama introduced him today. The next President ...errr, I mean Vice President of the United States of America, Joe Biden.

You seem concerned. Has that been an issue for you in the past, Klarissa? If so, please outline all the reasons why it was bad for the Presidency, the Vice Presidency, and the country. Thanks. I always enjoy your comments, Klarissa and I'm sure I speak for many others here.

Well, bless your heart... When you're running for office, we're sure you'll spend your supporters' campaign dollars working hard to get the other candidate elected. You sound like a shoo-in for any office.

What I like is that he is a strong personality with great moral fortitude. It will be fun watching this "loose cannon" unloading on the republicons.

Five reasons why this is a bad choice:
Reply
1. Doesn't help in a battleground state.
2. Is on record as saying great things about McCain.
3. Is on record as saying that Obama is not prepared for the job.
4. Makes the case for "Change" a bit moredifficult since he's been in Congress a decade longer than McCain.
5. Makes Obama look like a real lightweight in comparison.-

Ratskii10 months, 2 weeks ago
Face it Jose, any choice would have been a bad choice from your perspective. I'm sure that the pundits had talking points ready no matter who was chosen as the vice-presidential nominee. Biden's strengths will help in multiple states, not just one, and he said great things about '2000' John McCain. John McCain '2008' has made an 180 degree turn on most of his positions since then.

"1. Doesn't help in a battleground state."

I agree he's taking a chance here but my sense is that there was no candidate he felt met all his requirements
"2. Is on record as saying great things about McCain."
--McCain praised Hillary and said she'd make a good President. I guess this means he's doomed.
"3. Is on record as saying that Obama is not prepared for the job."
--Wait...It's a weakness to compliment McCain and a weakness to criticize Obama? Is this your first election, Jose?
"4. Makes the case for "Change" a bit moredifficult since he's been in Congress a decade longer than McCain."
--Or maybe your definition of what represents "change" is just a bit too narrow?
"5. Makes Obama look like a real lightweight in comparison."
Uhh...Ok, what *evidence* do you have that this is a liability? You people already think he's a lightweight. You'd say that no matter what. Anyway, I think one of the reasons Biden was picked is because he was one of the youngest people ever elected to Congress (he was the minimum age of 30 when he first got elected) and probably was viewed with some of the same skepticism Obama now confronts. Biden will be great. Just like Cheney smacked around Democrats (I'm ashamed to acknowledge), Biden knows McCain and Congress backwards and forwards. If any Republicans still *have* jobs after November, Biden will be using them as punching bags. This is an excellent choice and you cons all know it.

I hear ya, roundduncer. In fact, your comments remind me why I don't think Americans should be allowed to carry firearms or build lots of nuclear power plants all over the country. We're just not "ready" for it. ;-(

The fact that Biden is highly respected on both sides of the aisle will be difficult for the republicans to overcome. Too many of the solid, longterm republican senators have previously gone on record praising Biden for his integrity and ability to work in a bipartisan manner for them to now try and paint him as anything but. I think it was an ingenious choice for Obama to pick Biden. Not only is he qualified, but he fills the gap the republicans have tried to exploit in Obama's foreign policy experience. It proves him to be someone willing to recognize his shortcomings in favor of the greater good, instead of being the "elitist" the republicans have tried so hard to label him as. And Joe Biden won't hold back when its necessary to face down the republican slime machine that is already beginning to churn out the hate and lies. If they lose, it won't be because they were too weak or afraid to confront an issue like Kerry was when he was swift boated and called a coward by the deserter who defeated him. THAT history won't be repeated against this particular ticket. He's a great choice when you think about it, and the next few months should prove to be very exciting because of it.

I agree that he's a strategic choice for the Obama ticket, given Obama's worldview and the need to reach out to old white men. He's on the wrong side of quite a few issues for me, personally, however, and he acts like an irritated terrier, so he's not *my* best choice for the Obama ticket. He's a dealbreaker. We can hope that, if they are elected, they'll end up with a House or Senate of the opposite party (or Libertarians, Independents, etc.) that will clip their wings.

It doesn't matter to me who Obama picked as his running mate. Biden is as good as any and not as bad as Gore or Kerry. I just wonder what bounce O is expecting from a candidate who polled less than 10 thousand votes in the 3 or 4 states whose primaries he entered before dripping out. By comparison, Hillary--with over 18 million votes--was not even considered.

Obama was in a lose-lose situation in the sense that Hillary was at once the best and worst running mate Obama could have. C`est la vie. The die is cast.-

--A fellow probability and statistics buff...I like you already, Georgia. ;-) So, tell me... did you "wonder" throughout the campaign season how the least conservative Republican in the field (well, let's be honest, he's a liberal, right?) managed to secure the GOP nomination--after his campaign flatlined at one point last year? Talk about long odds...how the hizzell did "McAmnesty" make *that* happen, Georgia? Crazy, huh? It's like the GOP electorate just said "to heck with polls" McCain is the least sleazy of the bunch, we'll go with him. Oops... You know, Georgia, I got my knuckles rapped for using that word to describe a certain pesky prolific propeller participant who I find to be an AnnoyingGnat yesterday--I won't mention this AnnoyingGnat's actual Propeller identity name but she really IS an AnnoyingGnat, I kid you not...so I better be careful. But I digress...
Anyhoo, Georgia, I hope you're not an AnnoyingGnat because I really like insects. But I can't stand an AnnoyingGnat. My tolerance for bugs has limits...

I think the fact that she got the popular vote may have had something to do with it. Biden wasn't even in the competition, so he's no threat. If they win, even if they tank, we can always replace them in 4 years if people pay attention.

Seems to me the article leaves out the most positive thing about Biden. It gives Obama someone who can run interference on the Hill and get things done behind the scenes. Biden can put polish on Obama's initiatives by intuitively knowing how to apply give-and-take to both parties and both houses. Nobody doesn't like Biden, even if they disagree with him. And Joe gets a shot at the White House.. He`ll just be Biden his time for 8 years.

Ok, that pun was horrible. I admit it.-

From one of the youngest Senators ever elected to the oldest President ever elected (if he runs he'll haver recently turned 74 when he takes the oath of office). Seems appropriate. And I also just realized that if McCain is elected, he'll be only the second divorced President (the late Ronald Reagan currently holds that distinction).

JFK had the best at doing that and treated Johnson like a buffoon. When Johnson was president there would be a news story saying that a bill was being bogged down in congress. Then there would be a story about a group of congressmen going to the White House. Later there would be a story about the bill passing congress and going to the president.

Will Obama treat Biden like JFK treated Johnson or not.

It is a documented fact that former democratic president Bill Clinton has a severe personality disorder i.e. he is insane. I have talked with some of republican president George Bush's grade school teachers, the consensus was that he didn't burn one of the brightest bulbs in the class i.e. he is stupid. In my opinion these men represent the difference between the two parties, the republicans are stupid and the democrats are insane. The insane democrats nominated a man that cannot win the election, I think I will be insane this year and vote for the democratic candidate.

Biden is/was a lawyer with no talent, so he went to the bastion of “no talent” - the senate. Now his son Hunter, is a lawyer who is a lobbyist - thereby demonstrating phase one of “no talent”. From what I hear, the senate (the final “no talent” phase) cannot be far in the future.

But the main reason Obama picked Biden is because; Joe Biden represents a state the size of “a large farm”. He has ZERO national appeal. Fits the DNC MO quite nicely. -

He does. You're confused (and quite possibly disturbed as well...but I'm not sure of this, so I won't speculate. That would be libelous. And that's not my style. But can I ask something? Thanks. You've been institutionalized before, haven't you? I just thought I'd ask...

Biden is a great pick....He's a scrapper who's not afraid to street fight with whatever bs the Right wants to throw at him.

He's likable and articulate and should be great in the debates.
It's hilarious how the Right is now saying this choice only highlights Obama's weaknesses.
Where were they when Dumya picked "Big ****" Cheney??? -

Biden is consistent with Obama's stated opinion that he wanted someone who would speak their mind and wasn't a yes man. I was thinking, before the selection, that if Obama choses Biden, he will be unbeatable.
Reply
I have a funny feeling that if Obama hadn't chosen Biden the same people who are shouting, 'mistake, mistake' now, would have been yelling about how Obama had passed up such a perfect vice presidential candidate as Biden. Yeah, that's right, I'm saying that many of the people who post here aren't sincere. -
