of selfless heroism involves not the candidate but a humble
Vietnamese peasant.

Much like he betrayed his first wife and children! The man's no good, bad to the bone, and not fit physically, mentally, or morally to lead the USA!

MCain paid the man a visit, showed his gratitude and thanks. WHat more would you or the author have had him do? This seems to be a contrived notion presented in this Piece.

To the rescue: John McCain, lying on his back across a bamboo log, is saved by villagers - including Mai Van On - after his jet was shot down in 1967 -

Mr On's son-in-law, Nguyen Ngoc Toan, said: Before he died, he told us not to sell the medal McCain gave him.

Could it be true that Mr. On was awarded by the N. Vietnam government for the capture of a significant POW. Is there more to this story? My guess is yes!

So I guess he can't remember how many houses he owned, what kind of car he drives , OR who saved his life.

Most people would not walk casualy on the edge of a cliff.

Most people, if faced with a box that might have a rattlesnake inside, would not reach in before they looked.
Most people would not drink from an unlabeled bottle they found in the cabinet under the sink.
Strange, then, that so many of us would casualy affirm something, with so little proof; something that, if it were ever shown to be false, would shame us past all forgiveness.
If John McCain did NOT do what you accuse him of, you have lost all honor; all claim to be honest, all right to complain when others take their turn to lie.
I would not walk on the edge of a cliff without great reason; and I would not accuse John McCain of this crime without a hell of a lot more proof.
The risk is the same for both actions a fatal fall.-

Our trouble today is that everyone is quick to accuse and do not retract the accusation. Ironically, this type of accusation is exactly what sunk McCain's 2000 presidential effort. That was the accusation that McCain fathered a multi-racial child out of wedlock. Many believe the source of that accusation was Karl Rowe. Bush swept SC and it really launched his presidential campaign. McCain walked away with a campaign that went nowhere.
Reply
Sad, since our country would most likely be a different and better place with that version of McCain. He apparently decided to become a mouthpiece for those that destroyed him in 2000. That is when you know that he has fundamentally changed as a politician and as a person. -

sounds like all liberals here lol, John Mccain isnt perfect but he did serve his country, unlike other presidents who ran to england to get away from draft.Mccain was in prison camp for alot of years nad alot worse treatment then cuban prisonors could ever imagine so get off mccains back and get real, obama might have won democrats ocer but he has no chance of getting republicans to vote for him .

1. What president ran to England to avoid the draft?
Reply
2. Not supporting John McCain does not make someone a 'liberal'. In fact, most democrats are far from liberal. And there are plenty of Republicans who dislike McCain and there are even more parties... like libertarian and green.
3. There are many veterens of Vietnam who were treated far, far, far worse than McCain. Actually, McCain was treated 'well' compared to other prisoners and has by far the most North Vietnamese propaganda videos.
4. Serving in the military does not make someone fit for president and neither does becoming a prisoner of war.
Disclaimer: I do not support Obama or McCain. -

I don't understand why were seeing so many stories trying to smear McCain's POW experience all of a sudden. It is really the one thing about McCain that most people on both sides say is a good thing. There are plenty of things to attack McCain on, but attacking him on his strong point? Not only do I think that's a waste of time ........I don't know......to me it just seems a little......stupid.

Not to disagree with you on principle, but it worked great for the Bush campaign in the 2000 SC primary. McCain adopted a child from Bangladesh. Many would consider this a great thing. A poll comes out suggesting that McCain fathered an illegitimate black child. The rest is history.

As unfortunate as it may be in our world of politics, it has been a proven tactic. Take away the strongest aspect of a person moral and political strength, you take away from that person's foundation. The rest will tend to be shaky and may fall much easier.
This has become the basis of our political process. Very sad.

As the article mentioned a lot of people in Vietnam have claimed to have saved McCain's life, and in 1996 having a prominent American Senator who was saved by a Vietnamese man was politically useful. It is entirely possible that Mr. On was not the guy who saved McCain and was just chosen by the Vietnamese government as a place holder in a visit designed to improve relations between Vietnam and the US. Perhaps McCain wasn't stabbed in the leg, or perhaps his shoulder was not broken by a rifle butt, or perhaps one of a thousand other things tipped him off that this was not really the guy and he played along to save face for his hosts and achieve the desired improvement in relations. There could certainly be a lot of other explanations, but I'm willing to bet that whoever wrote this article was not primarily interested in the facts of the case, so I see no reason to take it at face value.
Reply
Honestly though, this has little to do with his candidacy or the policies that he would implement on becoming president., if you want a reason not to vote for him you can find plenty there. Digging up stories from your opponent's past and spinning them to make the man look bad is a poor replacement for discussing the future of the country. -

Jewboy10 months, 2 weeks ago
Despite being a major John McCain hater, I'm willing to give the guy a pass on his war record. If we as Dems attack his claimed military heroism, we're as bad as the Republicans who shamefully Swift-Boated a brave, decorated soldier named John Kerry into oblivion in 2004.
Reply
We don't need to go after McCain's Vietnam years. There's plenty to discredit this lying scumbug on without that. If he dissed the guy who saved his life, so be it. Move on. Let's kick his ass for being the cheating, phony, disconnected, uncredible bag of pus that he is. I'll allow that he was a courageous POW who lost track of his morality the day he departed the Hanoi Hilton.-

Time to shed some light on this illiteracy. The definition of betray is below. McCain never saitsfied this definition with regard to Mr. On because McCain was not cognizant of his rescuers and never had a relationship with Mr. On beyond the superficial.

Note that when US firefighterers pull someone from a fire, they don't follow that person the rest of their life, reminding them of a previous act of heroism. In many cases, they don't even accept the appellation "hero."
1.
a. To give aid or information to an enemy of; commit treason against: betray one's country.
b. To deliver into the hands of an enemy in violation of a trust or allegiance: betrayed Christ to the Romans.
2. To be false or disloyal to: betrayed their cause; betray one's better nature.
3. To divulge in a breach of confidence: betray a secret.
4. To make known unintentionally: Her hollow laugh betrayed her contempt for the idea.
5. To reveal against one's desire or will.
6. To lead astray; deceive. See Synonyms at deceive-

Only in American (US) politics are personnal attacks, slander and mud, truth or not , trown on the "other" candidates.
Both parties, republicans AND democrats do it , eventhough the republicans are the champions and trow the most "muddy" (and the most lies) slander.
Why can't americans vote on POLITICS, PROGRAMSand IDEAS.
I don't care what other candidates do in private live, as long it doesn't objectivaly, harms others (by objectivaly I mean e.g. being homosexual might subjectivaly harm you, if you're a extremist religious, but objectivaly, it doens't).
I don't care what they did or not during the Vietnam or other war.
I'm pretty sure Mc Cain probably behaved well, and might at the same time have done some wrongs in that war. War is war, and in war it's kill or be killed and follow orders (up to a point of course)
Yes Bill Clinton didn't go to Vietnam, and like many of his days, escaped, at the same time saying he's opposed to that war.
Bush didn't say he was opposed, but made sure "others" had to fight that war, while finding refuge in the National Guard, knowing he would not have to fight. (and even in the National Guard he didn't behave well)
So, both got out (like many). Again, I don't care, unless of course you're the one who wants to send your citizen to fight an illegal war under false pretences.
.Americans and American politicians, stop doing that.
Start thinking on real issues, both on short term AND long term (e.g. energy, ecology) and for the good of "the people". Problems of health, older people, unemployed, freedom, equal chances (as equality in se is never possible, but one has to look for as much equality of chances) education,.... ther are enough problems to solve, and all can have different opinions, that's democracy..... However, democracy also means not forgetting about the minorities, who have rights to ....
And remember, you're NOT alone in the world. So think about the rest of the world when you make decisions: What's good for America in the short term might be bad for the world. What's good for the world might actualy not be to bad for America..... -

What do you know of former POW John McCain or anyone else who gave for their country even if it was in the National Guard. It's apparent you did not serve and misguided hate is in all reality a nagging guilt to be indebted to him. Shame on you. For you to even comment on something you cannot possibly know any of the details of or to even think you have a fair or legimate right to comment on this matter is the unmitagated gall of a person that will neither care about the honest truth of the matter nor care about the hurtful clamity such diatribe may cause all parties involved. You certainly do neither yourself an honor nor them any justice by maligning them with your hastly contrived opinions derived by your five minute read on this subject. You sir, cannot possibly have all the facts and research needed at your disposal and an assessment to the intellect of your statements, would tell us such information would be of no use to you.... but to us, your views are vile and your opinions are of the most insignicant .

I cannot believe anyone would even think of listening to this trash. To begin with any claim that leads to the award of a medal or letter of merit is investigated completly by a panel from the U S military.

Secondley, the Viet Nam govt was not at that time nor is it now a reliable source of info about the treatment of or the disposition of or troops in that hellhole.
Third, if you don't think spending six years of your life being physically and mentaly tortured would not reveal something to your captors even if it were unintential then you are really deluded.
Fourth, If you really believe all this nonsense then maybe you and Hanoi Jane should go there to stay and good riddance to both of you !!!!!! -

There may be reasons to believe or be dubious about the story. I don't think that is can be put forth as established fact, but I hope those who are pointing that out will be equally dubious when the shoe is on the other foot.
