I know that New Orleans is a historically significant city but reality is that as long as it is below sea level it is going to be prone to flooding. Does it really make sense to rebuild this city?

Maybe it depends on what you mean by 'rebuild'.
If it just means putting it back like it was before Katrina, that seems pointless.

But if we value our own, and can fix it where it is safe from Hurricanes, we would be foolish not to fix it.

It is a major port; it has vital cultural and historical value, and its time we spent money on building something instead of blowing things up.

Time to let that whole region go back to the swamp. Waste of money and damaging to the environment to try to keep NO dry.

Much of the Netherlands is below sea level. How are they doing?

          Question for liberals and Democrats:
If a major hurricane hit NO next month and more lives were lost and major damage occurred, how many of you would find a way to blame Bush and the Republicans?
          BTW - I am a registered Democrat!

To start with, I am not a registered anything! But why do you feel everyone is blaming Bush? I don't blame Bush for the hurricane, but I do blame him for the failure to follow through with funds as promised. I blame the federal government for the sh itty conditions that the levies were in in the first place.
            Who do you blame?

I agree with crymptyphon that it is worth doing, but it can never be quite the same because so many older rental homes were destroyed that cannot be replaced cheaply enough to support a rental base. I don't know how you resolve this issue.
