Especially as an adjunct to cable TV, land line phones don't seem like a bad idea. Might even inject some competition into the cable world.

I can forsee problems at the edges -- getting strong cell phone service to all locations; or getting land lines to remote locations. Either one could run into big time costs as the numbers of subscribers served gets smaller. Interesting problems for state PUC's.

Ask yourself this. Which phone system is most likely to survive an EMP.

A home phone system is more reliable and cheaper than a cell phone. And with a tv in every room I get better news too.

I use a cell phone for emergencies only. I don't need instant communication with anybody, so my landline phone will always be available.

I do the same thing. Long distance companies are in competition and can give you a better per minute rate that ever before. I have a pay as you go plan from Virgin Mobile. No service contract, works everywhere, and I can quit when I want or change plans on the fly.
