Heavenly Father,

We Christians, as a whole, have failed to separate ourselves from the world. We've lost sight of true Christianity and become "Sunday Christians," who spend the rest of the week blending in very well with society. Not many people have it within themselves to submit to a vow of poverty, nor do I think that's what You necessarily have in mind for everyone. Still, we should at least have some humility in the way we conduct ourselves, and we should make some sort of effort to fight the great desire to have the latest "stuff." I'm particularly guilty of always wanting the latest gadgets, as much as technology is a part of my work and leisure, and so I've got a lot of learning to do. It's time for Christians to refocus on Christ, and on doing as Christ commanded. So, please bring about that change in the hearts of all of us who say that Jesus is our Lord.
In Christ's holy name,
Amen -

The simple life became complicated by the perception that conspicuous consumption is more of a right than a privilege. As we accumulate more societal goodies to raise our social status the more distance we put between our inner soul and our creator.

I'm not advocating vows of extreme poverty to understand the true nature of God just basic temperance based on the simple fact of that what you have today, in the way of ego strokes, eye candy, and social benchmarks of success can be gone tomorrow, leaving only you with yourself to deal with. An' we all know that 'yourself' can be a real beast to deal with without a basic understanding and fundamental connection to a 'higher belief' system .-

I think you're very right that it stems from people doing all these things to improve their social status. We definitely have a lot of concern for being visibly well-off to our peers, and it's just something we need to more deliberately try to avoid. Definitely the vow of poverty isn't for everyone, but, like the author of the article, I also respect those people who are able to fully devote themselves to God in that way.
