This story is a waste of time. Such a story is published in the "popular" press about once a week. It is usually a political gesture by the scientists involved to improve their local prestige and/or their ability to attract funding. There are literally thousands of such compounds under investigation and 99.99% of them will never lead to anything useful.

It is particularly useless to speak of "cancer" cures since cancer has been known for at least 20 years to be a whole series of different diseases. Even a cancer of a single organ (e.g. breast) is a series of different diseases in different people.
