Krakatoa, Indonesia Eruption: 1883 More than 36,000 people are believed to have been killed by the explosion of the famed volcano between Java and Sumatra on August 26 and 27, 1883. The blast was so loud it was audible in Perth, Australia, almost 2,000 miles away. Krakatoa has remained active since then; its most recent eruption was in 2008.
