In the Caribbean countries, smallholders comprise more than 50% of all farmers. They own less than one-quarter of the agricultual land but contribute a substantial proportion of basic food for domestic consumption. Introduction of inappropriate foreign technology only increases dependence on capital with little effect on sustainability.
