The immunization is to protect against known strains of a virus or other wee beastie. Immunization isn't always 100% effective. The recent drop in people immunizing their children has led to a resurgence of measles, mumps, and whooping cough among others.

Children who aren't immunized and become infected become a risk to other children who aren't immunized, older people with reduced immune system response, people with medical conditions that reduce their immune system response and they become breeding grounds for different strains of viruses and wee beasties that didn't exist before. Thus not only rendering existing immunizations worthless but increasing by a very high percentage the chance that a 'super bug' will arise.
