The worst colleges in America »
Posted By Dakota 1 year, 3 months ago in NewsRadar magazine ranks the Worst Colleges in the country as judged by criteria such as “incompetent professors, rock-bottom admissions standards, and unbridled alcohol and drug consumption” and more. University of Miami places in the “Most Superficial” category (One student tells the magazine: If you love "cell phones, Prada, Us Weekly, and have a mindless herd mentality, then by all means this is the place for you!"), while University of Mississippi wins in the “Most Intolerant” category (Confederate flags still pop up at football games), and liberal arts Hampshire College is named Biggest Rip Off (but hey, students can design the curriculum themselves!)

U of Miami has always been a party school. I graduated from Hampshire and it is not a rip-off. It is what you make it because students must design their own program. You have to learn what I call the Hampshire Hustle - you have to find out who to go to for what and once you do that, don't take no for an answer. Persistence, maturity, creativity and innovation are what gets one through this college. Oh, and brains don't hurt either! :)

I went to University of Miami and it was truly a joke. My major renamed and renumbered courses so often I took the same course 4 times without anyone noticing, not event the professor (who was my advisor!). The funniest thing about it is everyone that lives in South Florida thinks its 1 step down from Harvard.

The comment about the mindless herd mentality is definately true. The school is as plastic as they come. -

The real rip offs are the high priced elite private ones. I know of one very elite school where tuition rates were set by the president in order to be in the middle of the pack of schools he regarded as peers. No other criteria were used! One year, plans were to place the increase high (the thought was that the higher the tuition, the more competitive the school would be among its peers), and when Spellings announced a watchdog list of schools that raised tuition above 6%, the decision was promptly made to lower the increase to 5.9% to avoid scrutiny by the government. Increases were thus never made on priorities or compelling needs in the future year! Quite incredible. And i bet the school's practice is not atypical.

The University of Mississippi has been celebrating its mascot with the flying of Confederate flags and Dixie for over forty years until political correctness crap raised its ugly head. There was nothing racial in raising the flag and playing Dixie until those with "chips on their shoulders" became so intolerant of the majority who flew the flag and sang Dixie. Talk about ethnic cleansing!!!!
Reply
It's amazing that those who claim to be so "tolerant" can be so intolerant when it doesn't fit their agenda of what should or should not be allowed.-

You obviously have never been chained, beaten, hung from a tree, put on an auction block, seperated from your family, stolen from your homeland, denied the right to bear your own name and identity, forced to be property for anothers personal gain, given 3/4th the rights of any other American, denied the right to choose your own religion, vote, made a permanent underclass, scrutinized and denied justice under a law from a country in which was built on your back or those of your ancestors, intimadated, hated, killed, raped, tortured because the color of your skin. I bet you think swasticas(excuse the spelling) are acceptable also? It is one thing to have an opinion about something. It is another to flaunt and wave a flag that suggest terror, disrepect, and pain for those who view it as a symbol of oppression and injustice. You are probably voting for McCain too. That flag is racial. That flag carries all the years of hatred and the belief of white supremecy. Show my one black person with a confederate flag on their lawn. It is so sad how ignorant people can be to the feelings and rights of those around the. OBAMA is change

I graduated from the University of Miami with a double major in Marine Science and Biology, with a minor in Chemistry in 1991. I assure you it can be very difficult depending on your course of study. It's a great place to let loose, but there's an excellent education to be had as well, if you choose wisely.

Since when does waving a Confederate flag win someone the title of "intolerant?" I was born and raised in Chicago and I still root for the Union when I watch Civil War movies. But I am sick and tired of seeing people labeled as "intolerant" simply because their opinion does not jive with the supposedly "tolerant" group. Should not those who consider themselves tolerant tolerate others with whom they disagree? Isn't that the very essence of toleration? Seems like a double standard here.

This is the basic tenet of 'tolerance' as practiced by the majority of the liberal left. Everyone must tolerate their viewpoints and lifestyles, yet anyone who differs from that PC opinion is not to be tolerated. This is perhaps one of the most blatant acts of hypocricy in existence. That still doesnt make the redneck who hates everyone else any more correct.

Hi! UW student here. What footballs games have you gone to where you have seen a confederate flag in the stands? My boyfriend plays football for the Huskies and trust me, he would refuse to play if the university allowed that. Maybe you should check your facts again.

University of Miami, always a party school? Really? I graduated from the UM School of Architecture in 1995 (sure, it was a long time ago), but I have been to bigger parties back in high school. There's no need to have a party at UM when the entire city of Miami has every kind of party you could ever want! I'll agree that Miami could be considered a party city, with everything from low brow to high society, but it's definitely not a party school. Schools in podunk towns, such as the University of Florida in Gainesville, become known as party schools because there isn't a damn ounce of fun or culture to be had outside the campus borders.

The University of Mississippi has been flying the Confederate flag since the University closed it's doors in 1861 to allow all the students to go fight in the Civil War. Did you get that??? The school shut down for nearly 4 years so the students could fight for their homes and land. They fought for the South, the Southern soldiers were called Rebels hence when the school reopened and needed a mascot they chose to continue to be called The Rebels and celebrated the students that fought and died under the Confederate flag. That flag at Ole Miss is part of the heritage of the students. It's part of history -- the school's history and our nation's history. Just as the Civil War wasn't fought over slavery, the Confederate flag has nothing to do with racism.
Reply
Tolerance is not just being tolerant of one race. Tolerance should refer to ALL races. Being tolerant of a school that is respectful of it's own history shouldn't be a stretch for educated people.-

I think we in the north are most tolerant. But I do get tired of hearing folks wax poetic about ole' Dixie. I think it is similar to folks mourning the poor czar and what happened to his family, Because America is so good to most of us, we all identify with the story of the poor czar, ignoring what he did to those that lived under that regime..

At the end of the day, it does not matter what flag the University of Mississippi chooses to fly. The civil war is over and the South lost! Who cares? I think the rest of us need to get on with life and stop wasting time about "political correctness." As far as I know, the University of Mississippi is a pretty good school. History should be studied, and we SHOULD LEARN from it. End of story. By the way, did I mention that I am a black American?

whoa. i'm a black person who lives in the South and i've never equated the confederate flag to the nazi flag. that's a horrible comparison! blacks help build and fight for the South too. my family has been in every American war since the Revolutionary War to the "War" on Terrorism and i am very proud of that. the Confederacy is my ancestry as well and i'm not offended by it's flag; it's part of some people's heritage so get over it.

It's true the confederate flag represets the South and is a big part of southern heritage and pride, but slavery and other brutalities are still avoidably associated with the confederate union. They are linked, however indirectly, and a significant percent of the population will agree, no doubt.

In my area of SE Pennsylvania, there are two "colleges" which, by any measure available, rank as the "rankest". The "schools' are Cheney University and Lincoln University. They only were named "universities" because of an act by the State Legislature. Their grads can't read, write, or speak anything resembling American English, Oh, did I mention that they are both BLACK schools?

I do not know where some get the idea that the Conferate flag is not racist! Ha! LMFAO! It is: Just read the article below:
Reply
Symbol Type General Racist Symbol
Also Known As N.A.
Traditional Use:
Origins Civil War/Old South
Hate Group/Extremist Organization White Supremacists
Extremist Meaning or Representation White southern pride
Background/History Although the flag is seen by some Southerners simply as a symbol of Southern pride, it is often used by racists to represent white domination of African-Americans. The flag remains a subject of controversy because some Southern states still fly the flag from public buildings or incorporate it into their state flag’s design. The flag is also used by racists as an alternative to the American flag, which they consider to be an emblem of what they describe as the Jewish-controlled government.

Thanks for disproving your own statement that the flag is racist. You made sure it was pointed out that racists chose the flag to use as their symbol. The flag has been around a lot longer than these racist groups who choose to use it as theirs.
Reply
If we go according to what you say, anyone who uses a fork, spoon, plate or whatever must be a racist too. I am pretty sure the racist groups use these as the preferred means of eating. So we should ban all these items as well so we do not offend anyone because if a racist is using it then anyone else using it must be a racist also.
I truly feel sorry for uneducated people like yourself. You choose to go with the herd rather than try and LEARN.

First of all as a graduate from Ole Miss and a football season ticket holder, very rarely do I see anyone on campus flaunting a confederate flag or waving one at football games. Sure, there may be one or two that pop up in an entire season at games, but it's not like it was 20 years ago when it was a sea of confederate flags all over the stadium. lildrumrgirl and msdental84, thank you both for standing up for our great university. I truly believe that Ole Miss has worked extremely hard to correct its ways since the Civil Right's era and it doesn't help when ignorant people, who have probably never stepped foot in Oxford, much less on Uof M grounds, label Ole Miss as "Most Intolerant". Secondly, the 1st Amendment grants everyone freedom of speech and it would be illegal to ban flags at games (not that I'm sticking up for CSA's flag), so the second best option was to ban sticks. Kind of hard to wave a flag if you can't hang it on anything :)

I graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelors degree and Master's degree, was accepted in the Peace Corps, then went on to work at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. and then on to Wall Street. I made and have great contacts from some of the most successful families in the country. I loved the school, partied hardy, dated some out of site hot girls and was only sorry my children became Gators (although now very successful). I loved the frat life, the class competition was very high, the curriculum prepared me forcompetition from any other school excepting maybe the Top Ten Hey, I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box but I am very visible) , the idea of skiing in Biscayne Bay, the beaches, So. Beach, the weather, the Canes are great (some of the time), etc. beat everything else. I now live along the coast in So. California only because I couldn't take the humidity, Cubans and Haitians anymore. Plus, Fla. is not a great business area.

What makes South Florida great is the right for people to come here and leave whenever they want(to CALIfornia for example). Florida has a very good business climate, and good place to do business with all of Latin America, including the Carribean. The University of Miami has been at the center of it all for over 75 years.
Imagine if Miami and South Florida did not get all the negative publicity...where would we fit all of the people that come here to visit and decide to stay.
Good Luck, Check out the UM Alumni groups all over your area, perhaps you can keep a little of Miami in you after all. BBA'78 still in Miami. -

I LOVE how you "couldn't take the humidity, Cubans and Haitians anymore". (Please note the sarcasm). You, my friend, are incredibly silly. I've been to So. California and there are minority groups there too! Too bad all of the education, experience and "contacts fro some of the most succesful families" did not earn you some class! I wasn't the mindless drone of the herd mentality, I didn't have a cell phone or Prada. I loved it because I could ride my bike on campus and have my windows open most days of the year. Unfortunately, UM costs too darn much and I ended up at Florida State... But I'm a hurricane for life!

First of all How did this article turn into something of a racial stature? I think it's funny how people are complaining and making a big deal out of the confederate flag. People only see it for what they want to see it. Not what it actually stands for. It's not meant to be racist but if you think that way its because you apparently aren't informed of the actual history of it. However, at the same time all these African Americans complain of this they get african american colleges, special funding, an african american month, they also have a african american television. Now if caucasions had this it would be racist. So now tell me where this is a fair country. I think NOT! As long as African Americans think they're owed something because of slavery they need to remember that there own race sold them as well. It's ignorance and about damn time people got over this. Can we get back to what the article was really about?(Bad Colleges)

All of those things you stated, the colleges, funding, month, television, were instituted to attempt to level the playing field from prejudiced policies that were (and in some cases still are) in place. Historically, African Americans have NOT had equal access to all of those things.

You're right though, this is about Bad Colleges, not racism. However, I couldn't let that comment go without a bit of clarification. Education happens all day everyday. Get yours.

By far private colleges are the biggest rip-offs. I had the misfortune to attend Remington College. Courses were renamed and renumbered my class had to attend the same class twice. I took Computer Information Systems and I had to show 1 instructer how to open his CD drive more than once. They promoted thier Job placement department and I have not recieved 1 job lead. In fact I have began to leave that I even have a degree because perspective employers would actually smirk durring interviews when reading I attended Remington. They spend ontold amount of money on commercials here and its a shame because if they would put that money into improving their courses and faculty instead of trying to heard as many cash cows thru their doors they might actually be a benefit to someone one day.

IF THAT FREAKING CONFEDERATE FLAG MEANS NOTHING THAN YOU ARE A BIGGER IMBECILE THAN ALL THE KKK MORONS PUT TOGETHER. THAT FLAG IS THE SYMBOL OF A COUNTRY BEING TORN APART BY BASTARDS THAT WANTED THE USE OF SLAVES SO THAT THEY COULD SIT ON THEIR ASSES WHILE THE ''BLACKIES'' DID THE LABOR. THIS GREAT COUNTRY WAS NEARLY DESTROYED BY THOSE ''SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN'' WHO WAVED THAT REBEL RAG ALL IN ORDER TO DO ONLY ONE THING, PERPETUATE SLAVERY.....SO DON'T GIVE ME THAT CRAP ABOUT HOW IT HAS NO BAD CONNOTATION, MAYBE THE STUDENTS FROM GERMANY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WAVING NAZI FLAGS AT THE OLYMPICS......IT'S ONLY A FLAG!!!!! So what do you have to say about all the African slave holders. They are the ones who started it. You should be raising all kinds of hell with Africa for this slavery thing even getting started. They were doing it to each other long before big bad whitey came along and suddenly became responsible for it.
If you do not have a problem with them then obviously it was okay for blacks to own blacks. So who is the racist now?
