This was not a good choice for VP. A much stronger choice would have been Colin Powell or Condi Rice. Then the race card could not have been played by either side. This governor adds nothing to an already weak (at best) ticket. If this is an example of McCains judgement, Lord help us!

Colin Powell and Condi Rice WERE tentatively picked and declined multiple times for both the #1 and #2 positions. I think this is great news. I was afraid it would be Ridge.

Paulin has much more experience than many vice presidents and some presidents. And she's smart and innovative. I think it's a really good choice. -

Having just read Gov Palin's bio, I have to honestly say I like her for some things she's done in Alaska.
Reply
She certainly wants an honest government, having gone after Democrats and Republicans alike in her state, cracking down on corruption. She might be embroiled in a controversy of her own at the moment, but all indications are that she had little or no involvement with it.
She's a fiscal conservative, which is great. She was able to reduce taxes in the state substantially.
She seems to be independent from big oil but actively promotes development and wise use of natural resources, and is interested in the climate changes of this planet.
I think it's an interesting choice for Obama's opponent, but I'm not certain it was the best choice. I think he'll have a battle on his hands. Conservatives should like the pick...she's a strong pro-life candidate. But I seriously doubt that adding her to the ticket will bring over many supporters who were strong Hillary fans. Hillary's supporters will come around, albeit late, but they'll come around. They might not have gotten the candidate they wanted, but they won't vote for a Republican ticket on it's own, or because a woman was added to the ticket.
That's not going to happen. -

On Powell, He said he didn't want it and women could still Pull the discrimination card. On Condi, she also said she didn't want it and yes she would have covered both areas so no one could cry discrimination, but again she said she did not want it! Anyway one should not pick a running mate based on race or sex, but on qualifications!

Really! McCain wanted someone who would get the women, and his judgement that it would not matter WHO it was, shows how dumb he really is about the world. She has no experience but he is so cocky he does not think he NEEDS anyone with experience. He wants someone he can boss around. Also, she has a newborn and a lot of other children in Alaska, with Mccain's health, malignant melanoma not with a good prognosis, is this woman going to leave her family and be president??? God help us. He is going to play the "downs syndrome" baby thing. Her pairing with him will lose it for him, not win it.

You are ignoring the fact that she is one tough lady. She blew the whistle on ethical problem that Republicans had. She cleaned up the Alaska mess that the previous governor left. She has approval levels in the 80's and 90's. When she has made a promise in a campaign she keeps it. -

Senator Biden, you've been in the Senate since 1972, what did you do?
Oh that's right, you plagerized a speech back in 1988.
And you daydream on the train to and from Washington about what people MIGHT be talking about.
Never in 36 years of riding that train, people didn't come up to you and tell you personally what they think? Do you ride your own train car to and fro, senator? -

I totally agree McCain's choice for an unknown woman for VP showed poor judgement. If he wanted to pick a strong woman with experience he would have picked Condolezza Rice. McCain certainly isn't going to be able to use the "Obama isn't ready to lead" card anymore when he picked a VP that is unkown across the country. And what is scary is if something happens to McCain this unkown person could be our commander-in-chief. Last but not least, I can't wait until the VP debate either!

"Palin is pro-life. While running for Governor of Alaska, Palin supported the teaching of creationism alongside evolution in schools;[36] however, she noted she would not use "religion as a litmus test, or anybody's personal opinion on evolution or creationism" as criteria for selection to the school board".[36] -

memestryker10 months, 1 week ago
She is not pro-choice. Although most Americans in the 8/08 Gallup poll indicated they ARE pro-choice, it's a narrow enough margin that this may not hurt her (54% pro-choice, 44% anti, 3% unsure, with 63% pro-Roe v. Wade), and 73% said they would still consider a candidate whose views were different from their own on this issue.

I knew he'd pick Palin. She's not a bad choice at all; pretty clear neither Obama or McCain were playing electoral college math here. They were playing to demographics, for the most part, I think.
Reply
Being an unknown, I highly doubt that McCain will have an immediate boost in numbers from this, but it might blunt Obama's numbers a bit. Not a bad pick, a couple areas that may be exposed by the Obama people and hit hard on, but overall the best pick I could see from the McCain campaign.-

memestryker10 months, 1 week ago
Yes, I thought of those available and willing, Palin is the strongest. At least I know Ridge or something worse won't be replacing Cheney, no matter what happens. Biden needs an attitude adjustment, but has experience. Palin has a great attitude and more experience than a lot of veep candidates.

I think this might have been a good choice too. McCain's campaign might take a hit on the experience argument but it also does do some damage to Obama's "change" angle. If a young woman in the White House isn't going to change things up from how they are now I don't know what will! I like the idea of McCain's long-time experience mixed with a young person's ideals -- they could balance each other out nicely. It will be interesting to learn more about her.

I think she was definitely the best choice for the ticket, and I think she would do an excellent job as Vice President.
Reply
BUT... what real powers does the Vice President have. McCain is going to be surrounded by the old school political advisors. Palin is, I think, very much new school, and also very much a threat to those advisors. I think she'd be minimized by a McCain government.
I hope I'm wrong on this. If McCain gives her the respect and attention that she deserves as a running mate, rather than treating her like a subordinate, I think she would definitely mitigate the damage a McCain win could do. I think the upcoming weeks will tell a lot about what their partnership will be. Is it the old man calling the shots, or will he actually respect the opinions of a woman who is 30 years his junior?
The choice was the right one. What will make or break the campaign is McCain's ability to show that he respects and values the opinions of a non-military woman who is much younger than he is.

Well Palin still doesn't think Stevens should resign - after being indicted for corruption.
Reply
Palin not ready to call for resignation
... Asked whether Stevens should quit the Senate, Palin said she hadn't had a chance to fully read the 28-page indictment and said it "would be premature at this point" to call for Stevens to resign, as she did in the case of state Sen. John Cowdery, R-Anchorage, after he was recently indicted on federal charges including bribery.
Palin said she has no interest in leaving her job as governor should the Republican Party look to find a replacement for Stevens on the election ballot....

In terms of electoral clout from a VP, nither Obama nor McCain seem to get the math.
Reply
Obama's pick gets him an insider who can put polish on his initiatives, run interference, take the hits when an approach fails, and perform some necessary give-and-take (on both sides of the aisle) to get Obama's policies moving forward on the Hill.
McCain's pick is an appeal to the women who yearned for Hillary and remain undecided. He is easily the insider operative that Biden is, so he has that base covered, too.
Both tickets have plenty of experience, if at lopsided ends of both tickets. I think this one may be more razor thin than 2000. Let's hope a key state moves the numbers significantly in one direction or the other so we can wrap up the election and move on.
(Off point...I think Obama's nomination is a win/win. Even if he loses, he will have established a bar for young blacks for generations to come. The whole country benefits from that.)-

Just another example of McCain's duplicity and hypocrisy; he condemns Obama for lacking the necessary experience to be the commander in chief (which is false) and then appoints a VP with less experience. How absurd and obvious is that?

She is a politician who has a lot of fire and zing to her. She is charismatic and a record of a reformer. She has taken on tough problem and not backed down.
Reply
The Democrats have a problem with the strong Hillary supporters. At this point 47% are going to vote for Obama. This choice is tailor made for that problem. If enough Hillary supporters go to voting for her that will spell major problems for the Democrats. Both Clintons have made the obligatory speeches giving support for Obama but what about the days ahead? The Hillary supporters feel dissed by the way Obama has treated them. You don't tell a bunch of angry women to just suck it up for the good of the party. Women are not made that way. Obama or his people have created this problem.-

Larry Kudlow of CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.” asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate.
Palin replied: “As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.”

Frankly I'm sick and tired of people assuming that women will vote for any woman that comes along for the simple point of electing a woman. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure women are smarter than that and put a little more common sense into their choice process. No intelligent Democrat, I pray, is going to cross party lines based on the sex of a candidate. This is a stupid conversation to be having. Plain and simple McCain needed an edge on his ticket and getting an African American would have been too obvious. So, now he's played the only card available for his desperation. Yes, I will enjoy the VP Debate.

Its funny how his choice in VP is brilliant. She's young and inexperienced but he's bringing so much experience to the campaign. The big problem is he has had melanoma cancer 4 times in a 9 year period and is the oldest candidate ever. If he did win the election, he might not finish a first term and we'd be left with a young and inexperienced Sarah Palin for president. But, what the heck-GWB was young and inexperienced too. What's the worse that could happen?

McCain rattles the sabres of war for 2 years and brings the cold war on full force.
Then he dies. Palin takes his place as President, and everyone from Russia to Iran to Pakistan decides that the US is finally weak enough to be a target. The first Nuke detonates in a major American city...
That and the fallout of it is the worst that could happen. Is it likely? Unfortunately, I wanted to write a far-fetched doomsday scenario and I think I failed. He has certainly shown interest in re-invigorating the cold war. The angrier he gets, the more his health will suffer, and the likelier he will keel over.
Luckily, I don't think Putin is stupid enough to start a Nuclear War... but I don't know about terrorists or other nations' dictators who might "test" a woman president.
I wish you hadn't asked that question.
Unfortunately, the worst that could happen with Obama being elected is fairly similar (it just doesn't have the 2 year wait period). Putin's taken out of the equation, but terrorists and rogue nations may try to test him (I think it's less likely -- given that the nations being considered are more likely to expect a woman to be weak). Alternatively, Obama could be assassinated before or just after he begins his presidency and quite a bit of chaos would almost definitely result. Either way, the "worst" scenario is possible, but hopefully unlikely.

Here's a little bio about Palin. She like many other politicians has some strengths and some weaknesses. Have mixed feelings about her but let's see how this all hashes out on the campaign trail.
Reply
Palin is strongly opposed to abortion and supports capital punishment. While running for Governor of Alaska, Palin supported the teaching of creationism alongside evolution in schools. She is an avid hunter and sportswoman and a member of NRA.
Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii. Palin has stated that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment. But Palin's first veto was used to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. The veto occurred after Palin consulted with Alaska's attorney general on the constitutionality of the legislation.
When the Alaska Creamery Board recommended closing Matanuska Maid Dairy, an unprofitable state-owned business, Palin objected, citing concern for the impact on dairy farmers and the fact that the dairy had just received $600,000 in state money. When Palin realized that the Board of Agriculture and Conservation appoints Creamery Board members, she simply replaced the entire membership of the Board of Agriculture and Conservation. The new board, led by businesswoman Kristan Cole, reversed the decision to close the dairy. The new board approved milk price increases offered by the dairy in an attempt to control fiscal losses, even though milk from Washington was already offered in Alaskan stores at lower prices. In the end, the dairy was forced to close, and the state tried to sell the assets to pay off its debts but received no bids.-

Dont know why a company going into the tank would not get any bidders. Matanuska Dairy was on its way out of business for a long time....the people in Alaska had no intention of bailing them out.

That seems to be all you have, saying McCain is Bush III. That's stupid. Of all the initial Republican primary candidates, McCain was the most un-like GWB. During the early part of the campaign, McCain had even been called a Democrat in Republican clothing. Once he secured the nomination, the statement was made that the next president will definitly be Democrat, we just didn't know if it would be Clinton, Obama, or McCain.
