I'm certain every self-respecting Democrat knew the year that the Pledge was written, knew it was written by a Socialist (and why wouldn't Dems know that?), and knew that "under God" was added in the 1950s.

Of course they do! Not.
Why am I not surprised at the source nor the submitter nor the comments herein. Gotta have something to throw at Palin, right?-

Mind reading again? Sure you can guess what each and every poster on this thread knows and doesn't know. I also knew when the "under God" was added. I've actually mentioned it on propeller before. While I didn't remember off the top of my head the year it was written, I knew it was somewhere in the mid to late 19th century. Wow, I'm more knowledgeable of American history than the republican vice presidential nominee. Amazing.

And there is the silliness of the whole thing, Rat.
Reply
So she made a comment about the Pledge of Allegiance and now knuckleheads want to suggest that she's dumb or that they know more about history than she does. Amazing.
Since you're so smart about history, try telling the Wonder Boy that there are only 50 states, not 57.
See, pretty silly, ain't it?-

All of the candidates have mostly good track records, IMO. It's mostly which issues I deem most important that ultimately drives my vote in the end.
100% of the people who have ever run for office or posted to propeller have committed gaffes--or, as you Christians might put it, "come short of the glory of G-d." (Romans 3:23)

Palin introduced herself as a stay at home soccer mom. She was probably part of the PTA, baked cupcakes and attended class trips to the zoo. There is nothing wrong with that. However, the women that most females identify with can not afford to stay at home while hubby goes to work. She has a pregnant daughter, a special needs child, and other younger children. Are you saying that now there will be a roll reversal and the husband will stay home? I applaud her for being a whistle blower (in my neighborhood, whistle blowers are called snitches, trouble makers, etc) and it is the easiest way to make it to the "black list". I think Ms. Palin should stay home and take care of her family and if she is really serious about the V.P. in a few years she should hook up with a real winner like Hillary who could really show her the ropes.

She's been active politically since 1992 and minored in political science in college. She has worked side-by-side with her husband in the fishing industry, although not officially "employed." I like the fact that she has a special needs child and a pregnant daughter. It makes her seem more human, and I think it adds to her understanding of the issues families face.
Reply
I disagree with her religious views, but I believe in separation of church and state, and I've always voted for people whose religious beliefs I didn't share (I don't believe in the supernatural).
It will come down to the issues for me, since I'm not completely comfortable with either pair, while I really like some aspects of both.

I pos'd you, SOTM--we've had several discussions about this on propeller in the past, where the vast majority of posters were unaware of this--both repubs and dems. I always encourage them to find the old Porky Pig cartoon. "Old Glory," that predated the change.
Reply
"Under God" was added when the repubs controlled the White House and both houses of congress, during the Eisenhower administration, and was a response to the "anti-God" message of communism. -

While I cannot declare what any Democrat or other person may know about the Pledge, it is fairly common knowledge the Pledge did not exist in the late 1700s. Most grammer school kids probably know the Pledge did not exist until 100 years later. Certainly ANY person that keeps abreast of the latest news would know "under God" was not in the original Pledge. The whole issue of when "under God" was added and if it violated separation of church and state was addressed just a few years ago by the Supreme Court.

The Founding Fathers were proud Americans and I am sure they would have instituted a pledge of Allegience to our Country.
I like what John Jay, First Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court said: "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty. . .of our Christian nation (I believe we still are) to select and prefer Christians for their rulers. ."
With that I am proud to be an American to have John McCain as my next President of the United States. Obama is a fake Christian who opposes God's standard of life (prolife) and keeping marriage between one man and one woman.-

A person who sets religion above political aspiration is a closed minded person and must not lead a nation with people having different kinds of faith. John McCain is against helping the poor and in need. He graduated at the bottom of his class in the Military Academy. His mentality reflects on his decision and choosing a VP unknown to many as an example. On the other hand, Obama is brilliant, and is for equality.

You mention a "civil" society. Where does the basis of civility come from? While church should be kept from state...following the "guide lines" (trans: commandmants) of the bible is what our declaration and constitution is based on.
We need an ethic taught at our schools and if you can find another *writing* that can truly teach children right from wrong (since many parents aren't doing so,) then please share it. I'd like to read it.-

Well Tess... now that you mention it, there IS an excellent document or Declaration about "civil" society which can be taught AND it has NOTHING to do with the Bible or any other religious based text.
Check it out here.... http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html
It is called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it was penned 60 years ago December 10, 1948. -

Human beings are capable of formulating ethics and morals
without prefacing them with "Thou Shalt Not" - it IS possible.
I think it has more to do with a feeling of moral superiority
than it does teaching appropriate behaviour. I do not need
the Good Book to teach my children that theft, cruelty and
murder are not acceptable - and neither do our public schools.
Ethics can be taught - maybe not LEARNED - but they can
be taught in our schools without religious overtones.
If you care to put a religious spin on your personal or
familial interpretation.................that's what home and church
are for - feel free to take advantage of the American right
to Freedom of Religion. That's the guarantee - NOT that
you can dictate to all. You are allowed to worship freely
and instruct your children in the tenets of your faith.
But not necessarily MY children too.

This admitted terrorist who was released by the Feds and never hurt a fly? Oh, that `terrorist`? Compare him to any of the PNAC clowns, the lobbyists running McCain`s campaign, or those in the Bush admin.
Hagee? Parsley? which racist minister are you talking about? Convicted criminal for allies/friends? You mean Bush`s buddy Rezko, Abramoff, Keating Five (oh wait that was McCain himself), Cindy McCain ( oh wait, she`s rich so she never got charged with grand theft, forgery, abuse of controlled substances, etc), and so on.
Gimma a break. For every smear attempt you have on Obama, there are multiple legitimate attacks on McCain. I hope you are able to see the truth soon. Our nation needs to get away from the divide and smear politics of Rove and stand united against enemies both foreign and domestic.

It is scary that it McCain in elected and something should happen to him that she would be in charge! Die hard religious group will vote for her. Most organized religion is organized hatred and they forget love thy neighbor unless it is useful to them. I am a child of the 50's and mixed marriage and it was hell. Why is it that some very intelligent sounding people here- calling themselves Democrats or Liberals......haven't figured out that it's not the governments job to wholly educate our children. It is not the government's job to bail you out of your bad choices in life. It is not the governments job to take *care* of everyone. The government's job is to represent the people of this country and to protect our citizens from threat. NOT PARENT the citizens.
Reply
The government should stay away from abortion and charity. Our non-profit organizations an churches do much more than the government anyhow. Abortion is a private matter--between you and your maker. The government needs to offer up school vouchers--those that want the education will get one. Those that don't, won't. We'll also find the true teachers in a heartbeat.-

Allegiance of course, I type so fast I tend to misspell or leave out letter's. I pledge allegiance to the flag and to the United Statesof America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under god ,indivisible with liberty and justice for all. When I was growing up we said the Lords prayer right after the pledge to america. Back then in the sixties and seventy's things were so much different, kids knew better than to pull the tunts they do now, teenage pregnancis were not very caommon and there was a lot less crime then. But then of course we were afraid of going to hell if we did not obey God's word. And of course our parent's, wow could my mom swing a belt or her hand!!! Needless to say I was a well behaved teen, yup, that army life paid off. All I am saying is maybe she said it wrong, but her heart was in the right place, you can not go wrong believing in God, I do, my family does and we had no teenage pregnancies in my family.

Another great example of neocon smearing. Ayers did not even murder a flea. His `terrorist` crimes were so pathetic the govt did not even bother refiling charges against him. McCain is friends with Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld (before McCain flip-flopped) all of whom are considered purveyors of state terror in decent circles. If not from the most powerful country, they would have been brought on intl crimes against humanity years ago.
> Obama sits through hate filled racisr sermons for years
Actually, since you were never there and never walked a day in Wright`s shoes, you have no business saying whether or not it was hate-filled and racist. If Wright`s sermons were hate-filled and racist for years, so were Hagee`s and Parsley`s, whom McCain sought after for a year. Besides, we only know of the one sermon where Wright really went wild, and we also know Obama was not present. Even Huckabee and McCain`s own minister said you cannot hold any of the audience responsible for the minister`s words, and that no audience member agrees 100% with his/her minister.
We have forgiven McCain for seeking out hate-filled prejudicial ministers, why don`t you do the same for Wright? That is the `Christian` thing to do. You can still keep up the other lies if you really want.-

First of all, I only saw one video. RW media rumored there was another. Obama was there on neither occasion, never heard the stuff. Other than that, you got hearsay from people who were not within 1,000 miles of the church trying to broadcast smears.
Reply
Now, you got Hagee with all his videos, his quotes and his hate preaching and prejudice. Where`s your outrage about that? McCain was chasing after haters like Hagee months after Obama had already distanced himself from Wright and the worst of Wright`s sermons. So McCain knew the price of being associated with racist, prejudiced, hate-filled preachers but STILL spent months chasing after and then bragging about his relationship with Hagee. Finally, after months of appearing the hypocrite, McCain finally dropped Hagee.
One candidate has some judgment issues, and it aint the one from Chicago.
> If my priest uttered one word of hate in his sermon I would leave within seconds, not twenty years.
I have left two churches because of hate speech. The interesting thing was that everybody else stayed and never realized the hate speech that was being spewed to them and their families including the little children. In other words, although a lot of people may think they would leave a church, I think most people don`t even notice. The churches I left are still there, and except for the occasional prejudicial hate sermon, they are actually lively and loving groups.

The difference between the 57 state thing and the pledge bit is that Obama was speaking off the cuff and misspoke (40...ah 57 states). Palin made her mistake in answering a written questionnaire. The question clearly addressed the Pledge and if the words "under God" should be kept or discarded.

One thing you have to like about the McCain campaign is that they Give us something new every week, sometimes daily, to show their ineptitude. The poor cons have to keep dragging out the same garbage time and time again. Makes it exciting to wonder what the next gaffe will be from the cons.

man you guys are reaching lol, must be scared ! you see a strong intelligent woman with integrity, courage and loyalty running on the republican ticket and reach for anything to try and make her look bad. look there is something you need to understand the closer we get to november the more the truth is going to come out. the true barack obama will emerge. I am an independent who takes serious my vote for elected officials especially the presidential election and obama for numerous reasons is not the right man for the job, not by a long shot .

Palin on gay marriage, civil unions, and benefits for domestic partners (from the Anchorage Daily News):
Reply
"In October [2005], the Alaska Supreme Court ruled the state couldn't deny spousal benefits to the same-sex partners of public employees. That means that while Alaska has banned gay marriage, it can't withhold, say, health insurance from a state employee's gay partner...."
"Palin said she's not out to judge anyone and has good friends who are gay, but that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment [to ban gay marriage].
"Elected officials can't defy the court when it comes to how rights are applied, she said, but she would support a ballot question that would deny benefits to homosexual couples."

Dave 59, I am sure there are many people who will help pack your bags to leave? Secondly, to all of you people out there who seem to catch every misstatement made by McCain or the new VP not knowing where the pledge originated, I am sure most people don't? I am a lot more concerned about Obama thinking we have 57 states though?

The men running the country were the Founding Fathers in the 1890s?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but the words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950s.

Palin:
Reply
Said she hasn't focused on the Iraq war yet, when asked what she thinks about it.
Believes in home schooling
Believes in abstract science
Believes in pro life (even in cases when a woman has been raped)
Believes condoms and protection should not be used, and teen pregnancies are normal and acceptable
Wants to take away equal rights for homosexuals
The ultra conservative religious Republican leaders and the Taliban are extending their full support for Palin.
The rest of the world is laughing their heads of at McCain's choice for VP of the greatest country in the world. -

I have to admit to being amused at the reaction of liberal Obama supporters to the Palin selection.
Reply
I was totally and pleasantly surprised by the choice of Palin...but the reaction of Obama supporters has bordered on the hysterical!
That kind of says it all as far as I'm concerned. Obama had a chance to choose the candidate that got 18 MILLION votes in the Democrat primaries and dissed her..choosing instead to choose an inside-the-Beltway politician who only got 9,000.
It must be humiliating for the party of indentity politics to be outsmarted..and to see McCain do what they were unwilling to do...nominate a strong smart woman for succession to the White House.
They didn't see it coming...and they don't know how to handle it..except to throw as much silly dirt as they can find.
This will come back to haunt them..as their hypocrisy when it comes to breaking the glass ceiling bcomes more and more obvious each day to every woman in the country who doesn't happen to be a knee jerk liberal.-

Barack Obama is an empty suit,a shadow without substance, a cynical "say-anything" politician who promises change but only offers slick speeches repackaging old tired policies for new and higher taxes and bigger government that decrease freedom and create dependency and have repeatedly failed in the past.
Reply
He is a celebrity, but no leader.
He maintained long relationships with race baiters and an unrepentant former terrorist..and waffles about those relationships!!
After the surge he opposed in Iraq proved to be a huge success, he still refuses to have the intellectual honesty to admit that he was wrong, and that McCain, who pushed for the surge, was right!!
When we are on the brink of recession,he proposes higher taxes with no thought on how that would devastate our economy. If we aren't in a recession, his tax increases would definitely cause one!!
With energy costs rising and most Americans hurting, he panders to his left-wing extremist base and refuses to consider exploiting ALL our energy resources, including allowing more drilling in our offshore fields!!
McCain may not be pretty or charismatic, but he is a decent, honorable man with the experience and character to lead.-

I think both McCain and Obama are good people who want to do the right thing. The devil is in the details.
I think we have people with extreme views who cannot see that the best solutions probably lie somewhere in the middle. I disagree with McCain that kids are better off institutionalized in orphanages than with loving gay families. I disagree with Palin that abortion should only be legal when the life of the mother is at stake. I disagree with Obama and Biden that disarming ordinary citizens will protect them from violence by criminals and corrupt government officials. I disagree with Obama on giving more power to the U.N., that put Libya in charge of human rights, and with most member countries not enjoying the freedom, liberty, and human rights we have in the U.S.
I'm still trying to decide what I think is best regarding the Iraq war. I thought it was a mistake in the beginning, but we are there now. I still think we need to focus energy on Afghanistan and prevent the taliban from crushing the people, especially women, again.
For me, it's still an open election.
