In this age of globalization, e-commerce and outsourcing, there are many more Western companies with interests in Russia than during the Cold War. Quite true that the Cold War was very much subdued rather than openly reflected - vide, for example, the new levels of tech and business espionage Russia conducted even after the SU crashed. Not to mention their maintaining an exceedingly high level of nuclear armament while continuing to pump resources into weaponry dev and space tech.

Not sure they've already achieved to previous levels of political and military prowess again but their overall economic prospects are very much better these days which bodes for a more sustained round of super power attitude. -

Interesting that this article should focus on Russia, as opposed to perhaps the Ukraine or even someplace like Poland.

Intelligence is not just related to military, or even commercial, knowlege. In the larger sense, it's knowing what someone else is really thinking; as opposed to what shows up in the myriad of publicly available sources. With so many nations in the world, lots of them want to know that stuff about lots of others. I'm sure US thinking is of great interest to any number of countries (e.g. Israel, Saudi Arabia, Norway, South Korea, etc.). Just reading Time or talking to high-ranking officials won't be good enough.
Liked the article pointing out that military stuff is not necessarily the be-all and end-all. The US and Russia are different countries, with differing ways of thinking and different histories. Even if we are "friendly" there will always be some competing interests. -
