One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston. It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

I thought it curious that McCain's wife would choose to wear a diamond pin reading (in diamonds) "Navy/USMC." It seems disingenous when you're claiming to be the party of average people when each diamond in a stickpin you're wearing is worth more than the pay of a soldier you're supposed to be honoring with such a pin.

I don't see why there is such a fuss. If earning lesser than $5 millions is a middle class, then $300,000 dress is really a piece of cake. Perhaps the change is really coming, with high triple digit inflation coming that money will not be what it once was.

Her brooch is not diamonds, it is made from rhinestones. It is much like the 'sweetheart jewelry' worn during WWII by proud mothers, wives and girlfriends. I actually have a WWII piece of jewelry that is very similar to what she is wearing and it is, most definetely, not made out of diamonds!!

Her choice of a Stick pin has nothing whatever to do with her support for the Military. How do you know what she donates in support of the military, soilders and their families. If she can affort the diamond stick pin, then why not! At least her diamond inscription has something good to say.

I think you need to focus on the issues not clothing or rhinestone jewelry. My wife has a similar pin .....says "new attitude" and its rhinestones! We make combined just under $58k. Seems like when the freight train is running at full speed ahead, you cant hear the dogs bark! Get used to it now....the Dems, liberal media and leftys are scared to death that they JUST MIGHT LOSE. I cannot imagine a hard left liberal President with a Democratically controlled Congress. It gives him a blank check.

But you will buy Obama's criminal friends that help him get a house, an evil pastor's influence for the past 20 years , and his serious lack of experience (because the absolute truth is that whatever lack of experience Palin is accused of having , Obama's record undoubtedly shows much less). Cindy Mc Cain has even earned more of a right to be President and to wear the pin she's accused of wearing. An knowing her, I bet she's given back a hell of a lot more money and sweat in her military and humanitarian efforts than Obama could possibly aspire.

In my opinion Cindy McCain can wear diamonds on her head if she wants. She and her family earned their wealth and should spend it any way they see fit. Her money has nothing to with our soilders pay or anyone else. Would you personally give your pay check to someone else and do without on a daily basis. I don't think so!!!!! Therefore what she wears or does not wear is irrelevant and has nothing to do with politics or this elections. As long as the money is coming from her pocket who is to say how she should spend it.

Obama's wife is the picture of a first lady. There is no need to knock any of the candidates wives or families because they aren't the ones running for office. If she wants to wear a $300,000 outfit, then that is HER business. That has NOTHING to do with the many issues this country faces. I'm not a McCain/Palin supporter but it is low to talk about his wife because she has done nothing except be his mate. To call Obama's wife nasty is just wrong and low. That is what makes a lot of people not support Republicans because it seems like instead of tackling the REAL issues, they look for ways to put others down and take the attention off of the fact that they got America in this slump and don't have any intentions of getting out.

I only have to list one of many instances she was caught doing..Stealing drugs from her own non profit co.while acting as a nurse to help the sick. It doesn't get much lower than that.She was feeding her own drug habit and lying about the theft all along. When her husband John the senator found out he tryed his damnest to make it go away thru the power of his office and was not able to. She finally agreed to undergo therapy and was later accused of stealing drugs again.So you see !!!!!!!! I don't have to name five.

i didn't even notice her dress. all i noticed was the almost complete lack of any people of color on the convention floor. a dramatic difference from the democratic convention where all racial mixes were clearly apparent. it looked like a sea of white faces with large islands of white hair, and everyone in suits. and they thought they could fake us out with those faux "hand made" posters. who the heck do they think they are kidding?-

Look, I hate to say this. However, I too am sick of all of the racism and antagonism between blacks and whites. First of all if you have been paying attention, the GOP is no longer the rich part. I have been noticing that their demographic has been changing. Then you know what.....the country is 13 percent black, many of which don't vote and many of which switched to the democratic party as a result of Kennedy a long time ago. Prior to that time, it would have been a cold day in hell to see a black person vote for a democrat because historically black people had been republicans. However, I can assume that you are too young to realize this. Many of you who are posting these little racist rants actually have no physical contact with whites and have never personally had and racist events occur in your life. Thus your hate is unjustified and illogical. Half of the race problems are the result of both races and preconceived notions. It's seems both sides have the perfect plans to solve the worlds problems and no one seems to ever get anything accomplished because we like to FIGHT amongst ourselves. Disgraceful, but what do you expect from a girl born with a platinum spoon in her mouth? The cost of her ugly outfit is surpassed only by the cost of all the plastic surgery she's had to hide the ravages of drug use.

Reply I'd say that every dollar of the plastic surgery money has been well spent. She's still beautiful, at age 54.
As for the drug use, Cindy McCain didn't mug, carjack, or housebreak, anyone. She took drugs from the charitable foundation, that she set up, to help unfortunate people of the world.
I'm delighted with her family's success. The outfit was a little too loud for me. I thought it would've been more appropriate, in the "Hood" but, I have no taste in fashion. I'm not a beer drinker, but, I think I'll go out and have a Bud.
