It makes her speech all the more amazing in that she was speaking without a script for at least a portion of it. That is unheard of. Have you ever noticed how much more eloquent Barack appears with a teleprompter than he does in interviews?

These convention speeches should all but be ignored. They turn politicians into carnival barkers trying to draw in a crowd. Perhaps some of the inaccuracies in Palin's speech resulted from a broken teleprompter but she knew the basic mantra to chant.

My vote was solidified by an interview I saw with Obama conducted by Fareed Zakaria on his 360 GPS show on CNN. His grasp of the world was nearly as good as Fareed's which is a very high compliment. These are not simple minded men. Certainly Obama is no light thinker as he is portrayed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh. His ideas and beliefs instead were shaped by actual experiences. He articulates these very well. I have also seen McCain in a similar interview. He is an experienced politician but it is his recent record I examine and as Obama correctly pointed out, that record does not indicate "change is coming". In fact quite the opposite.
But just as GW eschewed overseas travel so has Sarah Palin. That is a huge strike in my book. One of the reasons Bush has such a poor grasp of foreign affairs. I knew nothing of foreign cultures before I began traveling. Sure, you read books but you only get a glimpse of the culture. Executive experience is learned on the job and largely shaped by advisors. Personal experience is quite different. A specific reason I will not consider voting for a ticket with Palin on board. -

FACT CHECK: Sarah Palin’s Speech
PALIN: “Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.”
REALITY: PALIN SAID SHE WOULD BEG TO DISAGREE WITH ANY CANDIDATE WHO SAID WE CAN’T DRILL OUR WAY OUT OF OUR PROBLEM
Palin Said She Would Beg to Disagree With Candidate Who Said We Can’t Drill Our Way Out of Our Problem. Asked by Invester’s Business Daily “Some politicians and presidential candidates say we can’t drill our way out of our energy problem and that drilling in ANWR will have no effect. What’s your best guess of the impact on prices?” Palin responded, “I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can’t drill our way out of our problem or that more supply won’t ultimately affect prices. Of course it will affect prices. Energy being a global market, it’s impossible to venture a guess on (specific) prices.” [Investor’s Business Daily, 7/11/08]

Well the US government reports on drilling offshore and in ANWR didn't venture a guess, but stated outright that drilling ANWR and offshore would, in full production, have the specific price impact of saving the American public between 3 and 5 cents per gallon. -

Why did Pelosi and Obama want to release oil from the strategic reserve to lower prices if an increased supply won't have much of an effect?
Reply
Any release from the reserve would be insignificant compared to drilling offshore or in ANWR -

Actually, you get oil by drilling. No drilling, no oil. I think you really are saying you disagree with oil for other reasons, whether global warming theories or dislike of big oil companies. That is a political opinion held by some people. But her facts as to the options for sources of energy for the United States were correct.

It costs a lot of money to extract oil from Alaska. That oil is low grade oil too, so none of it will come here. Then there is the costs of cleaning up the inevitable spills. We would actually be losing money as a country if we do this. It's a bad business decision. But what do you expect from a c- student?

. Community crime watch volunteers. You know them? According to Palin & Guiliani they are nothing but a bunch of laughing stock..
. School PTA members, volunteers who spend their time in schools during lunch breaks helping kids, well according to Palin & Guiliani, they are a bunch of laughing stock.

You must have missed this story:
Fiorina presser: Democrats for McCain
Earlier today, I attended a press conference held by Carly Fiorina to introduce the Citizens for McCain Coalition, a group of Democrats and independents who plan to vote for John McCain in November. Six prominent Democrats joined Fiorina for the conference, including a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, two elected Democrats, and a former Clinton-era ambassador to OPEC.
Included in the event was Silver Salazar, Hispanic community leader in Colorado

As far as the Hispanic vote in AZ:
He's gotten consistently 70% of the Hispanic vote in his home state of Arizona -

Probably because once they saw what they were up against with McCain and Palin, they were extremely concerned. I think you worded that wrong in order for us to take you seriously..... money doesn't buy everything....
"Community crime watch volunteers. You know them? According to Palin & Guiliani they are nothing but a bunch of laughing stock.. "
You totally missed the point on that one. They aren't laughing at community crime watch volunteers or organizers. They are amazed at the fact that a person who has that kind of history believes he can lead this country. The decisions to be made as President of this country are a whole lot different than decisions made by a community organizer. Also, I don't believe the issue was brought up until the Democrats started knocking Palin around for not having experience.

This whole thing is amusing. Someone none of us had ever heard about gets picked for VP and within minutes the republicans act like their savior has come. It's as if the head of their ticket has become an afterthought. What did she do to earn this adulation? She gave a good speech. The very same thing republicans have been using as a negative against Obama.
Reply
Face it people, she was chosen for no other reason than her sex. A transparent political ploy to get angry Hillary supporters. Obama had to fight his way to the nomination, Palin was appointed because she has a vagina. Time will tell how she does when things heat up.
'd love to see a woman in the whitehouse. I supported Obama but would have been thrilled to see Hillary in the white house as well. I just want to see that woman earn it. Hillary proved that it could be done.-

I don't believe it was for the Hillary mob. They are too protective of their reproductive rights to want Palin. Nope, they are the dogs lickin' up the split milk of the disenfranchised base, AKA Fundi's, as Palin is a Pentacostal. Google that for more explanation.

I love the way some people like to define themselves into a winning position. If the other party is highly critical of the republican nominees that means they are frightened and that the republicans were winning. If they were not attacking the republican nominees that would mean that there was nothing to attack and therefore that they would be winning.

vman, I have yet to see a real tax comparison.
Reply
A real comparison would include the expenditures vs the taxes.
For example, the poverty"Millenium" bill, the energy bill employing the steelworkers, and the money required to support the "20 promise" neighborhoods should be included.
I think that on the surface it looks like Obama's tax plan would benefit most people on here. Obama has, in addition to the above, promised paybacks to people who don't pay taxes.
Let's see what the expenditures are before we believe that the tax plans are realistic. -

MSNBC reported that there were teleprompter issues for Sarah Palin.
Reply
There were also reports of problems with the same teleprompter for Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City. Rudy Giuliani delivered a fantastic and rousing speech that was well received by the partisan crowd. There are varying reports that the teleprompter was not set up correctly.
In fact, Rudy Giuliani went on so long a video that would introduce Sarah Palin had to be pulled and she went on right after Rudy Giuliani exited the stage -

I'm over the initial Palin euphoria. Good pick, and it'll be a tight race. If she gets to the White House--I think she will--she'll have plenty of successes and failures, struggles and learning curves. I'm not so naive that I think she'll change the way Washington does business, but I think overall she has the potential to leave a positive footprint. As VP, she won't have the option to override McCain's moderate-to-liberal perspectives. Her job will be to support and implement his initiatives, not hers. If she doesn't get that, she's doomed to a relatively quick resignation "for personal reasons."
Reply
If Obama gets in, he won't be the horror show we conservatives suspect. The same Washington glacial flow that moderates conservatives also moderates liberals. He'll be more liberal than we want, less liberal than we fear. And if Iran goes nuke, he's going to be faced with choices that, if not made by him, will be made for him.
As for Russia, here I'm a bit more liberal than my friends. I believe it's ill-conceived to shove NATO down Putin's throat in the former Soviet states. EU? Sure. Euro? No problem. But a definitely military alliance on Russia's borders? Russia has historically wanted its buffer, a need developed over the centuries in response to invading armies. Our history is 200 years old. Back then, Napoleon was marching on Moscow, and centuries before, the Mongols burnt Moscow to the ground. I believe we should let the former Soviet states moderate, trade, grow, prosper, and all the rest. But we have no need of a military alliance with them. There's no upside. If Russia was to use its oil and gas pipelines as weapons against the West, I might have a change of heart. For now, we need Russia as an ally against international terrorism, as an economic and technological counterbalance to China, and to help keep nuclear materials secure. The former Soviet satellite states, however, should be free to align with either Russia or the West as they prefer, and to whatever degree they wish. -

Anyone who has used a telepromter or notes and is a public speaker, they will tell you that they just use them just to keep their thoughts straight.
Reply
Once you have become famillurise with your materials that you are speaking on, It is not a problem for an accomplish speaker to continue speaking. on without them
In fact they can make a better speach if they are not tied to there notes. Obama is a very good speaker because he has those qualities. He does not read his speaches. he speaks from the heart.
On the other hand, McCain has to use the telepromter because he cannot keep his thoughts straight. with out it. This really show a lack of beleif in what he is saying.
He has flip flopped so mnay times it is pitiful.
And if you look at George Bush when he speaks, he has a telepromter, and becuse he has lied so much, he still stumble and mumble his speaches. He can't even read the speaches that are wrote for him. .
He stumbles in his speaches so much he looks like hs's on drugs most of the time.
By the way did he have to take a drug test to get that JOB? I would like to see the rusults of his urine sample.-

All politicians play to the audience in front of them. So it doesn't matter who writes their speeches. You just listen to the speaker(whoever it is) and say ok let's see what this person does once elected. Most speeches are given in generalities anyway.

You cons really seem to be scraping for anything you think is a positive for Palin. Hey her teleprompter broke down in the middle of her speech AND she kept right on speaking....Is that not amazing or what folks?? Is there any doubt about her ability to lead the country now!!! Come on people how many people can possibly do that?? The way I look at it is that HItler didn't have a teleprompter either and he fired up his base with his speeches too.

Obama the other day said “My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wassilla, has I think 50 employees. We've got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – we have a budget of about three times that just for the month,”
Perhaps this is why Obama NEEDS a prepared script when he speaks. And if this was a Prepared Script his staff is full of idiots.
He left out the fact that she IS the Gov of Alaska, I wonder why (not).
Lets see For “executive experience” Obama has a staff of 2500 and a budget of 48 million per month.
The SOLE purpose of his staff is to get Obama “elected”.
That what Obama “claims” as his executive experience.
Palin as gov of Alaska has X number of state employees and a budget of 35 billion?
And their purpose is to serve the People of Alaska.
So let recap okay?
Obama’s executive experience is to serve Him and Him ONLY.
Palin executive experience is serving the people who elected her over the last 16 years
Would it be fair to say that Obama’s experience is to serve
“Himself”
And
Palin’s experience is to serve “The People”
Is that about it?-

Obama is a Senator.
The Senator serves the people.
The Senator bosses his senate staff.
The Senator bosses them to serve the people.
Ergo, Obama has years of experience being in charge of lots of people, to get things done for people.
And more people have voted for Obama during his years of service, than even live in Alaska.
And we want him to serve everybody .
And why are you called 'injest' when you never say anything intentionaly funny?

Elected her over the last i6 years ??? She's been governor for about two years and if you insist on counting her stint as council member and mayor of a village of 6000 that still only comes out to about 12 years. Where did you find the other 4 years of 'elected office'??

After listening to the post mortem of both speeches, I am more solidified than ever in voting for Obama/Biden. Not only did McCain not give any specifics about how he was going to change us other than he will, he dwelled too long on the VietNam War which was 50 years ago. While his service was admirable and his courage beyond the pale, isnt that the chance you take when you sign up. VietNam is over and so is the Civil War. In both cases the South lost and we lost as a country.

While I agree that Palin's personal life is personal and neither her family nor Obama,s family should be grounds for open hunting season,, her views want the government involved in mine. If peoples personal lives are just that, then the government should stay out of my uterus and out of our bedrooms. Her positions on abortion and same sex issues are asking to the government to be involved in peoples personal lives. Can't have it both ways. You dont want the government involved in yours, stay out of mine.
