It makes her speech all the more amazing in that she was speaking without a script for at least a portion of it. That is unheard of. Have you ever noticed how much more eloquent Barack appears with a teleprompter than he does in interviews?

I'm not sure many can give a speech so fluently in front of millions, without a teleprompter, but I understand the meaning behind what you're saying.
Reply
I'm more concerned about the fact that anyone can give a speech. I'm in no way qualified, as I said on another story, to lead this country in the head job or the runner up, but I could make you believe I am. Therefore I want each individual in this country not to be swayed by a speech or quick answer to a question, without thinking about the question first.
Someone's conduct in their professional and personal life, as an adult over 25, is going to tell me what I want to know. Job performance in all their jobs and legal entanglements, and what side they came out on those entanglements. We have to look to these issues of character and what they are telling us to our face, not through a well written, well practiced speech.
Quit looking to eloquent speech givers for all of your leads. I could read a speech, or make one up on the spot, and you would believe me. But I should not be the President or Vice President, which are two of the highest positions of power on our planet. GET REAL PEOPLE!-

Thank you for writing about an issue that was on my mind when I woke up today. I would say that I'm astonished by right wingers' sudden interest in and emphasis on stellar public speaking skills but, considering how conveniently they flipflop on just about ANY issue when it serves their interests, the fact is I'm absolutely not surprised at all.

We listened to George Bush destroy the English language (as we watched him and Republicans do the their damnedest to destroy our Constitution, our government, our economy, our military, our standing worldwide, and our planet as a whole), and did we hear cons dissecting and critiquing Bush's every public speaking engagement? Did we hear Bush supporters discussing in great detail how powerful and moving and articulate and energizing and wonderful he was wrt to his public speaking skills? NO. We did not hear ANY of that.
What we heard were lies about how cool it was that the fake cowboy was speaking like someone with the IQ of a farm animal. We heard more con flipflopping. We heard rationalizing and we heard EXCUSE after EXCUSE about why this didn't matter. Even NOW cons can't make up their minds. When Obama speaks and electrifies hundreds of thousands, cons regurgitate Rush and Hannity: "Duuuhh...His speech is purty but a purty speech don't mean nuthin...Duhhh...I'm votin' for the COMMON man. That Barack is an uhh-leeetisssst"! But we don't hear anything like that when McCain and Palin speak "without a telepromter" (allegedly). "Whoooooo--SAY-RAH is our Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-RO. We know McCain is a lying weasel who doesn't represent our values but SAY-RAH will saaaaaaave our paaaaaaarty!" LMAO Lying cons are out of freaking control.
Suddenly we're not supposed to care that the cons are worshipping a woman with NO EXPERIENCE and whose teenage daughter is knocked up and on track to get married before she's graduated from HIGH SCHOOL! Cons?! Seriously? I don't want to HEAR a con talking about public speaking again because you people didn't care SQUAT about public speaking, (OR fiscal responsibility, OR personal responsibility,OR being hired by the Justice Dept based on talent, hard work, and educational achievement, OR uniting and and not dividing, OR what the rest of the world thought of your President, OR...etc, etc, etc) the last 8 years and so what you think about these things NOW is absolutely, positively IRRELEVANT. Your opinions on these matters DO NOT MATTER, cons!
I don't believe you people have any thoughtful, rational, sane approach to decision making and you've demonstrated this time and time again over the years. You will switch gears to nominate someone you despise, and you'll then switch gears to support a RUSHed, opportunistic VP selection and you cannot be trusted when you lie with such enthusiasm on a routine basis. Your lies will NOT take you to the White House this time, cons. Dream on, 'cause it ain't gonna happen. ;-(

“Cons - Obama doesn't have to practice?? He just reads the teleprompter. I'd like to see how he would do with the teleprompter turned off!”
Reply
You already have.
It is easy to tell, when he is using a teleprompter his speech is clear, precise, good cadence.
Without the teleprompter his speech is “ errrr uhmmmm errr well uhmmmmerrrr ahhh I uhmmm err think ahhh errr ahhh errr that” -

It is one of the more tedious falsehoods on the rights's talking point-list, that Obama is not eloquent without a teleprompter.
Reply
He was on the O'reilly show recently. Did wonderfuly well; no teleprompter.
Well, Bill might have been using one but that hardly counts.

McCain does much better with a mike in his hand walking through the audience....In fact, he's most uncomfortable in a "staged" type sitting....But this is where Osama is MOST comfortable, staged, prompted, and canned....He's an excellent speaker, but I don't want an excellent speaker to be my president....I want someone with the experience, the know-how, and the character to be Commander-In-Chief and Osama just doesn't fit that bill....
Osama would lose it as we've all seen it before....You take away his speech and teleprompter, he's just another empty shell with no substance ....

With Bush you got your wish, Brad....a non-speaker, whether in front of teleprompters, large settings, small settings, and I'm sure even in front of a mirror in his own bedroom...
Reply
Anyone see Obama's opponent last night? He didn't look at his audience at all...his eyes didn't move from those teleprompters...they were glued to them...I'm sure he's thanking God his teleprompter worked...LOL...
So...come the debates...what's Obama's opponent going to do? No teleprompter...he won't be walking around with a mic...he'll be there...alone...saying "my friends" a lot...and seeing how much of his POW experience he can get in to each answer, whether it's the war in Iraq, healthcare, or buying groceries to feed a family of four...
I have to give him credit, tho...getting Palin on the ticket was a very good move...I even think she's beginning to overshadow him!
So we'll see...too bad he won't be able to have Palin at his side at the debates...I'm sure she could help him with some of the answers...LOL...-

That your 'loop-hole' to when he wins the debate?
Sort of like Wolfie saying the 2 best sellers were too well written, so he couldn't have written them.
Klarissa, does Obama's forehead seem kind of low to you?
Does he seem to have too many teeth in his grin?
Are you, down deep, convinced he got through harvard with some sort of minority charity pass?
Obama can't really talk; can't really think; he isn't a 'real' leader; that isn't real experience, not 'real' patriotism.
Did it ever occurr to you, that maybe your view of Obama, - isn't real ?

As I said elsewhere, no one believes you truly care about anyone's public speaking skills, FSU. George Bush is still in the White House, remember? We KNOW what cons did last summer and we haven't forgotten that you had nothing but lies and excuses in defense of the fake cowboy so give it a rest. Your garbage about tele-prompters and speaking off the cuff or whatever? NO ONE BELIEVES YOU. LMAO. This is an amateurishly obvious con red herring which you people need to stop trying to peddle. You've lied too many times to be trusted with running our country again. Sorry. Someone has to say it. ;-(

You're absolutely right, FSU.

Without his teleprompter, Osama completely loses it. That's because he either 1) has no core values or 2) doesn't want to tell us his core values.
I don't care if you're a Republican or a Democrat, that's not a good thing. If he were a Republican, the Dems would be having a field day talking about the "community organizer President" who can't talk without a writer!
McCain & Palin have taken away Obama's prime weapon that McCain is another Bush term.
No sane human would look at the McCain/Palin ticket and equate it to Bush/Cheney. It's not rationally possible.-

Bush is a flag-draped chicken-hawk devoid of a single success in his life not handed him by others.
McCain is -
a flag-draped hero, with many successes he earned himself.
Darn. If McCain was not running to validate Bush's war, and Bush's economy, and Bush's view of how handy a flag is to cover things you would actualy have been right, spinward.
Who'da thunk it?

According to the NYT:
Jon Favreau - chief speechwriter to Senator Barack Obama
Favreau leads a team of two other young speechwriters: 26-year-old Adam Frankel and Ben Rhodes
Why would the campaign be paying 3 speech writers if Obama writes his own speeches? -

These convention speeches should all but be ignored. They turn politicians into carnival barkers trying to draw in a crowd. Perhaps some of the inaccuracies in Palin's speech resulted from a broken teleprompter but she knew the basic mantra to chant.

My vote was solidified by an interview I saw with Obama conducted by Fareed Zakaria on his 360 GPS show on CNN. His grasp of the world was nearly as good as Fareed's which is a very high compliment. These are not simple minded men. Certainly Obama is no light thinker as he is portrayed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh. His ideas and beliefs instead were shaped by actual experiences. He articulates these very well. I have also seen McCain in a similar interview. He is an experienced politician but it is his recent record I examine and as Obama correctly pointed out, that record does not indicate "change is coming". In fact quite the opposite.
But just as GW eschewed overseas travel so has Sarah Palin. That is a huge strike in my book. One of the reasons Bush has such a poor grasp of foreign affairs. I knew nothing of foreign cultures before I began traveling. Sure, you read books but you only get a glimpse of the culture. Executive experience is learned on the job and largely shaped by advisors. Personal experience is quite different. A specific reason I will not consider voting for a ticket with Palin on board. -
