I got the feeling that her parents may have been fairly well off; or they maybe saw enough promise that they felt that all the hassle would be worth it if she came out OK.

I one interviewed a girl at a top-drawer engineering school who had 150 college credits and was still classified as a junior. She'd gone through 3 wildly different majors at three different schools, such that almost none of her prior credits ever counted toward her new major. Pleasant and competent, but still one had to wonder when she would ever feel "home".
Don't be too quick to judge. We're all different -- fortunately.

If you think that Divinity schools and seminaries are "bastions of Republican power," you don't have the slightest hint of an idea of what you are talking about!!!
Those schools are full of things and ideas that are anathema to most Republicans:
advocacy of moral relativism, lack of respect for authority, coddling of Marxist idealogy and its proponents, de-valuation of traditional family structure, acceptance of deviant sexual behavior, and support for more governmental interference into daily life, just to name a few!
Divinity schools and seminaries largely are, in reality, bastions of leftist thinking and left-leaning activism!!!!!

Well. Any good divinity school allows questions, thinking, logic and requires an excellent foundation in philosophy and logic.
"There's no reasoning allowed in religious schools today."
It depends on the school. Harvard Divinity, SFTS / Berkeley cluster encourage, if not require, questioning, logic, philosophy and thinking.
Perhaps you two are generalizing about divinity schools while referencing evangelical-run schools that are more about indoctrination and follow-the-leader.
The majority of divinity schools that fall outside that narrow definition tend to be bastions of liberal orthodoxy. Christians follow Christ's example and speak strongly about justice, peace and Christ's example as paramount. Buddhists tend to be from the more liberal end of the spectrum. You don't find many orthodox Jews. Nor many fundamentalist Muslims.
Vettenut has it right when s/he says seminaries (especially Catholic) and divinity schools tend (with the exeception of those nasty evangelical schools) towards the liberal (socially) end of the spectrum.

yeah, actually I know many people -- current students and those who are now successful adults -- who transferred from several different colleges.

What very well could have happened -- 1st year in Hawaii -- maybe she was homesick, maybe she was claustrophobic (I've heard from several kids who tried to go to school in Hawaii that the idea is much better than the actuality and living on an island-- even one as beautiful as those in Hawaii i-- made them feel boxed in and trapped. Then, (as transfer students generally do not get as generous of scholarships as incoming freshman) she transferred to a junior college for sophomore year. (She apparently got her associates' degree there, seeing as they are recognizing her as a distinguished alumna). Perhaps after two years in Idaho, she was homesick or perhaps funds were tight -- so she went back to Alaska for a year and then finished in Idaho.
That's IF these stories are more truthful than the Down's kid is really her grandson, and the affair and the rest of the slime coming her way. -

Most of the comments on this blog are uneducated emotional words from people who do not identify their qualifications. What makes those people right? Nothing! Our problem in this country is ignorance. If we just want to voice an opinon so be it. but what goes around comes around. I saw McCain (The one who was not so high in his class display class and congratulate Obama for the nomination. I did not see Obama congratulate McCain. I hear Obama call the current administration failed. What gives him the right to pass judgement? He has no qualifications, no administrative experiance in government (small or large) and is friends with a domestic terrorist. So tell me again how ones education holds any importance. I will bet that most of the people passing along these slurs have envn less knowledge and education than Palin or McCain. For sure most have no understanding what it takes to be in government.

Are you the same person with the same goals, dreams and ideals that you were when you were 17? (The age you actually make the decision of where you want to go to college and what you want to major in).
So, would we prefer someone who says "this is what I'm going to do" and sticks with it regardless of whether the reality of the plan matches the idea of the plan? Someone who won't waver from the original plan, even if they can see that it's nearly or completely a disaster?
Or, would we prefer someone who can and is willing to correct their course mid-stream, if necessary?
Seems to me, that the first description pretty precisely defines some of the left's biggest gripes about GWB.-

No, I went to 3 different colleges. But I'm not under the assumption that I'm prepared to run the United States. And obviously it is unusual that she went to so many schools over that period. Since she is so unknown to most Americans, items like this that are outside the norm are going to garner attention.

I don't think that the number of colleges she attended are relevant. I'm more concerned with the course of study. A Journalism degree may help in politics, but it does little to prepare someone to run a country. I feel that a degree in Constitutional law carries much more weight in this argument.

It may not matter how many colleges you attended, but it is also utterly ridiculous that she is qualified for the highest job in the world. Seriously people. It is absolutely ridiculous. I can't even imagine what in the world someone has to be thinking to take such a serious position and put her in it. I'm saddened by the sexual ploy this has become. Not a serious decision, but simply a ploy to win a specific voter. I don't even know what to say.

But as for her speech I have this to say. I am in no way qualified to be leader or second runner up as leader of the free world, and I'm using that term loosely. But I can stand in front of a crowd of people, and read a prompter and make you believe whatever I want you to believe. I highly see that as a way of showing my qualifications. It's acting. There are plenty of great law schools like Michigan, Berkeley, Illinois or even UNLV that are excellent. It is the character of the person that counts. Who wants to elect some hack Chicago politician who was involved heavily in drugs and has socialist leanings. It has nothing to do with your formal eduction.

Who the hell cares if she went to different schools? it doesn't reflect on here the slightest bit. The reasons why moving from school to school are unknown to us. Maybe Hawaii was too far away from home. Maybe the people she met at the other schools weren't people she liked. Maybe the environment of a school was bad. Maybe the professors weren't of her liking. Maybe cost had something to do with it. Maybe she wanted to change majors.

I don't know why some people make it sound like a regular mother (hockey mom), who has a pregnant teenage daughter is an irresponsible and bad person just because she is a governor and that she runing for higher office instead of looking after for her children. All of us have faults during our lifetime. If anyone of you out there is sinless, I'd be the first one to worship you and be your servant lifetime. I'd give Ms. Palin credit because she is just an ordinary person who didn't attend an Ivy League university. Just look at his ties to Tony Rezko (yes, he is going to jail). I live in Illinois - this Obama guy is a cheap crook that speaks well. Look at his record folks - its unbelievable that this crook was nominated by his party. I guess you can say he is smart, but then so was Al Capone.

sarah palin has definately put the scare into the democratic party like no other. I have never seen so many attacks on a candidate in my life. All the attacks are for something trivial or petty, so its obvious nothing can be found. I wonder why the press doesn't print the negative facts on obama and biden that is readily available for all to see? I think the news agencies must believe that the american people are just too dumb to pick a president so they will do it themselves and they have backed obama and now its too late to get out.

Anybody that thinks Bill and Hillary have their heart into support Obama are living in a fantasy world. I'm not a Clinton fan, but hard to believe they have their heart in it, but will go through the motions. They thought after all they did for blacks they would get mild support, but they were brought down to the real world. The blacks would have supported OJ over them since they are white.

Same goes for convicts. Jesse never learned how to use percentages in school. The percentage of blacks on welfare and in prison--relative to the black population--is a much larger percentage that whites relative to the white population.

What a poor white trash thing to say. Do you know how hurtful something like that is to a woman who is 47 and always wanted a child but never allowed to have one for you to say such a thoughtless hateful remark. I'm sure this 17 year old never intended for this to happen but unfortunately it happens even in the best of families. It always has, it always will. My own grandmother became an unwed mother at the age of 21 in a part mennonite family. At least they had more class about it than you. They accepted it and moved on but it was the community that made her life and that of my father's a living hell. She carried the scars to her grave and my father still carries the scars of insults like yours. Finally at the age of 45 she moved 3,000 miles away and began a new life. It was because of trash like you that I barely had a relationship with my grandmother because of the hurt she felt in her own community. How do you think this girl is feeling right now? Sure, what she did wasn't right, and I'm sure the family has been all through this but to be honest it's none of the country's damn business what this child does. It has NO bearing on her mother's ability to perform her duties to her state or to her country. It's hateful bigots like you who give this country a bad name, not 17 year old unwed mothers.

I'm just saying to people like that think that flashing a teen age mother in the eyes of the world and let them think that teenage pregancy is okay is going to set the stage that unprotected sex is okay. This is why we look at teenage pregnacy in a negative light. So for those who think that teenage pregancy is a postivie thing to stroll across the stage, then i want you to dish out $15,000 a month to pay in taxes for many of these teenage mothers will have to go on some type of welfare system to pay for childcare, doctors vistits, affordable housing and still susidized their utilities bills. Are you someone that shove that type of mother out from your income because if you can, then I can send you three hundred girls that could use your support entirely. If you couldn't have a baby, why not adopt one? There is no excuse for a woman to be childless if she doesn't want to be a parent. Women are adopting babies from all across the world. I'm only a biggot to you because you are not looking at the can of worms that could be open if every teenage girl in this country across the world thought it was okay to get pregant before walking across the stage to recieve (if they make it) their high school diploma. I believe their is a time and place for everything. So if you truly wanted a child, there are still children out there waiting to be adopted who are in need of a women (like yourself) who could love them as their own. Now take that and watch your language because this is still in the room.

I did not know until graduation day that I would graduate from my federal service academy! I graduated in the top 1/3 of my academy!! ANY GRADUATE OF ANY SERVICE ACADEMY IS STILL A WINNER DESPITE THEIR CLASS RANK!! I know, you went to a regular college where dope, sex, drugs, and cheating were a normal part of your life. It was like a jail to be in my service academy. The current students of my service academy have stated it is like being in jail. What's the big whoop. So did I! I attended several colleges until I found the one which I felt suited me best. I tried the state university, too much of a party school. Then went out of state to another type of university, too far away and tuition too high. Then moved to the big city to try living in "the real world." That didn't seem right and finally ended up at a private women's college voted #1 in the nation at that time. There I not only finished my undergraduate but went back and got my masters. Just becuase a person doesn't go to one college and stay there the entire time doesn't mean they are a bad person. This country will find more things to pick at on this poor woman than Reagan had jellybeans. Until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes NO ONE, NOT A SINGLE LIVING SOUL has the right to judge another person's life.

I didn't pay too much attention to Obama at the onset because I thought he would not get nominated. He was the dark horse in the race, he is a black man and that is a big issue with some people. When I heard his commercial admonishing Exxon I knew he would be dropped from the primaries. After all aren't huge companies like that base funds for a candidate? No candidates name a company, they skate around the industry. I figured he had not been in Congress long enough to have political ties or bedfellas if you will. I was intrigued because he actually had the gall to name a target. Now that my interest was peaked I was looking forward to listening to his ideas. He says, "I trust the American people to realize that while we don't need big government, we do need a government that stands up for families who are being tricked out of their homes by Wall Street predators; a government that stands up for the middle-class by giving them a tax break; a government that ensures that no American will ever lose their life savings just because their child gets sick. Security and opportunity; compassion and prosperity aren't liberal values or conservative values – they're American values." Smaller government that does their job, now that is something everyone can agree with. He also mentioned reforming the lobbyist. He is going to clear the hallways of congress so maybe we can have a chance to walk through and be heard.

Fast foward to Palin and I knew the VP pick was going to be a formidable opponent. The first thing I found was a photo opt of her accomplishments. I was disappointed because it had no graduation pictures. I thought she didn't have a college education. Her speech wasn't informative, didn't fill in any blanks. From what I gather she is an ambitious, gutsy, eloquent, and an attractive woman. Not enough to get my vote. Sustenance please, something that will give solutions. As far as the terrorist attacks on our nation I believe both candidates will be centered. McCain has the personal experience and Obama has the intelligence. Both attributes are powerful.
Who will I vote for? Obama. Who would have thought?
