Comments for Why the Media Should Apologize for Writing About Sarah Palin »

Posted By hsaleem 1 year, 4 months ago in News

On behalf of the media, I would like to say we are sorry. We have asked mean questions like: How well did McCain know Palin before he selected her? How well did his campaign vet her? It is not our job to ask questions.

    FTA
"Sarah Palin hit the nail on the head Wednesday night (and several in the audience wish she had hit some reporters on the head instead) when she said: “I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.”

LOL! I'm frankly quite impressed that you managed to deliver such a lengthy quote and still completely obscure the point of this article.
      Bravo, Wolfie2007, I "plus" thee! :D

      Wolfie2007,

Since we are quoting, let me add that my favorite was the Lily Tomlin quote:

“No matter how cynical I get, it’s just never enough to keep up.”

"And could that be the real point of the attacks on the media? To unify the Republican Party?
No, that is simply the cynical, media view."

Once again the tried and true formula of attacking the media and blaming them for asking embarassing questions or questions they find hard to answer. Of course attacking the media will deflect and distract from the real issues facing America and it's future, and if it unites the Republican faithful under one banner, then it worked as well as they hoped it would.

She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax, which taxed even food>>>>

That's horrible, taxing food. I appreciated the article, & the woman who wrote it because it can be substantiated.

I don't think anyone has to apologize. Especially after not hearing any thing about how she will fix the following problems:

. $ at all time low
. foreclosures killing communities and families
. job losses and lay offs huring bread winners
. gas prices at all time high
. food prices out of control
, $trillions owed to China in borrowings. How to pay off?
. $billions in surplus in 2000 is now $trillion in deficits. Who will fix it?
. Iraq invasion, destruction and occupation was ordered by GOD.
. 40 million people without any health insurance.
. seniors filing for bankruptcy unable to afford health care & medicines.

All I heard was that Obama is not qualified because he was just a community organizer helping people who had lost their jobs and a US senator.

And all this with a democrat congress. Obama wants to raise taxes which would exacerbate the problems. Obama has 30 years experience running off at the mouth. Palin has 2 years of actually running a government.

I know that John McCain says that, but could you tell me when where and in what form you heard this from Obama? After all, if you know that that's what he wants to do, then he must have said so, right?

Of course not. Its another of the right wing spin ploys. Altho it is amazing that they believe we can run up serious debt, (the US debt more then doubled under Bush, i.e. he borrowed MORE then all past Presidents combined) and then not have to pay it off. They seem to have this philosophy of if we make a widgit this way and we lose 100 for each one we produce, we can make it up in volume.

                airglide, More like "AIRHEAD" !

"And all this with a democrat congress."

You people are so transparently stupid its down rite pathetic.
Republicans had control of all three branches of government for 6 + years over the last 8, so your argument does not stand up period!
Republicans created the oil crisis we are in now.
They had several years of control of all three branches of government and what did they do for the working man? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Oh but they did have scandal after scandal and double the debt, Lied to the American people to get them into a war that should have never happened!
So what did McCain and Palin offer up to help the average American over the 4 days of the Republican convention?
                NOTHING! JUST PLATITUDES AND RHETORIC!
And we where told 50 or more times that McCain was a POW for some 51/2 years.
And we also learned that this HOCKEY MOM FROM ALASKA was going to shake up Washington after she complained about the media for asking questions, about her and her record in Alaska ! After what Obama has been through with the media over the last 19 months.
She's complaining after some 5 days of media attention WTF did she expect?
All I can say is this so called HOCKEY MOM will be ONE HEARTBEAT AWAY and that is just INSANE!

Not just running a government, but running it into the ground, if reports are to be believed.

Lets give Palin a dubious achievement award for her recasting her ineptitude and incompetence as "experience."

                  what it comes down to:
Obama is a great orator but he doesn't vote pro or con, he just votes present. A do-nothing candidate.

Obama has Billions of union dollars paying for ads for his candidacy.

McCain definitely not a great orator, but he acts, he walks the talk.

McCain has the government stipend for a candidate.

ROFLMAO. McCain spitting on vets for years. The "maverick" who voted along Bush lines better then 90% of the time. McCain who changes his view fromtreh start to the end of a speech. McCain who's manner of handling the tough questions is to throw a temper tantrum. Mccain the guy who sold out his fellow POWS for a preferential treatment. McCain the guy who talks about family values but dumped the wife who waited for him for money. Yeah hes been acting ok, much like Fred Thompson but the act is he knows what hes doing and cares about middle america.

Since 4/10/08 Obama has cast 17 Yea or Nay votes.

McCain has cast 0. Zip. Nada.

                      Who's the 'do nothing candidate'?

Prior to April, both candidates were fairly active.

There is a reason why McCain stopped voting on Congressional matters. Without a record to draw from there is no substance to attack. He's taking the coward's way out of making hard decisions on national matters and declining to exercise his duty to vote yay or nay on issues affecting millions of American citizens. And he's also shirking his responsibilites to his constiuents.

The Republicans are offering nothing to change the course of this nation. Only smear and rhetoric. McCain will be just a continuation of Bush's failed policies. And now they are trying to push this extreme right wing hockey mom on us who is totally out of step with the rest of America.

Does everybody get it now? It's the press' job to ask tough questions, especially uncomfortable ones, and prick the ballooning egos and questionable assertions of the powerful and influential. That's why it's actually a right spelled out in the 1st Amendment. It's important, vital. Otherwise, we could all just get our news via e-mails directly from the RNC and DNC and dispense with democracy altogether.

Personal opinion is fine, if identified.

Articles put out by the democrat party, bloggers, and democrat operatives should be identified as such.

You're right that the lines need to marked clearly and brightly. Responsible news outlets - print, broadcast and online - will clearly mark columnists and opinion and analysis pieces. But those columnists, like all citizens and practicing journalists, have the same right to ask questions. Like O'Reilly with Obama last night. Biased? Of course. But it's still his right to ask questions.

Agreed on articles, but I find it interesting that you specifically choose to cite Democrats as if they alone push PR and propaganda. Republicans, Libertarians, LaRouchies, Communists, etc., all parties do it. That's why the press must be vigilant.

As to whether they hate the person or not...who knows what a journalist's, writer's or blogger's emotional state necessarily is. If you feel that someone hates a candidate you like merely because they are tough on the pol, that's not necessarily right, and 99% of the time you'll be making a false judgment.

Journalists' motives may include a wish to be good citizens, or advance their careers, or be provocateurs, but actively hating someone they write about? Believe it or not, it's pretty rare (I know a lot of journalists - liberal and conservative - at major daily papers in Chicago, New York, L.A., Seattle, Denver and other smaller cities, and they couldn't function that way. Pundits, bloggers and partisan op-ed writers? I'll go a little further with you there).

The idea that a free press is necessary for a free society is a pretty persuasive one. Whenever dictators take power, shutting down the press is one of the first acts they engage in. In a society with free speech, free press, free assembly and so on, you're not always going to like what you hear and read and see. But licking your wounds over such minor irritations sure beats the alternative.

Without the concept of legally protected speech and press as a basic right, you couldn't have something like Propeller.

The media certainly shouldn't ask this woman anything...she is going to be VP and is above silly questions about issues and experience...she should be allowed to denigrate the service of others and no one should question her...It's ok that she thinks MLK had no responsibilities and that those who organized to win the right for her to vote were losers...just leave the woman alone, she was the mayor of a really small city for god's sake...and less people voted for her to be Governor of Alaska (115K) than voted for Biden in the Presidential election...even though the republicans lied and said that isn't the case...so what that she supported the bridge to nowhere, took the federal money and then was against it, who cares that she supported the Indicted Ted Stevens, and loves PORK and EARMARKS and LOBBYISTS, just not in her office, well now they are because they run her campaign, but again, lets not dwell in the details...remeber The republicans are in office now and held the Congress for most of the time, but we need change so obviously we elect the republican party again because then it will be, um, a change from what we have now...get it? And did you hear McCain, small government, less taxes, low regulations, he really means it, he's not like all the other republicans...and he really cares about me and my small business, who cares that our dollar is worthless, I'll get to keep more of my worthless money and spend it on gas! Listen enough is enough leave the poor lady alone!

This crap will go back and forth each and everyday before and after this election. With every failed attempted policy change we will hear I told you So from someone. I'm so tired of the process that I want to wash my hands of the entire thing, but i'm stuck with it.

This much I know. I refuse to support a party which has supported the absolute disaster, at their own admission, of the administration of the last 8 years. I think that is reason enough to say it is time for them to hit the road and let the others try.

We have no better solution. If you can't find anything about Joe Biden that's not more recent than law school grades to rag about, shut up. I want this country cleaned of what has happened in Washington under this administration.

Say what you want about the Clinton administration, this country was in a profitable stage and at peace. Someone tell me why we are saying anything else.

Please move on. She is so unqualified I look like a better candidate with my college education. The press should attack her as much as the Obama family hand bump got for how long. Get over it. You wanted to run for VP now live with it like everyone else has to. Ask Chelsey Clinton about attacking the children of candidates. She was treated terribly like the child of every child of a candidate put under a microscope.

Sarah said in her speech "some members of the media" - I guess if the shoe fits - I personally saw bob beckel on Larry King Live saying terrible things... he asked "what kind of a mother is she" - she has been smeared by some members of the media - just as she stated.

I found the article condescending and rather insulting. The reason many of us are very mad at the media is the difference in coverage between the DNC and GOP. The only questions asked of Barrack were from guys like Hannity and Limbaugh. His resume is very weak. His short list of friends and associates included a convicted terrorist, a political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois convicted on several counts of fraud & bribery, and a racist minister he at first claimed was kind of like one of those "crazy uncles every family has". He's never really been called on the carpet by anyone from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN or any of the other liberal media concerning them.

Palen on the other hand has been accused of wearing a fake pregnancy belt and hiding a child for her daughter. The fact that Bristol was pregnant wasn't really a secret. Many people in their hometown knew of this already, the press went all Ape Poopy. Then they came out that she fired a state or city employee for not doing his job. Then they brought up the brother in law that turned out to have tazered his own son, threatened his father-in-law and was charged with being drunk, passed out and on duty in his police car. That lead to Palin's husband being arrested for OWI. 22 years ago. Yesterday there was the claims of Sarah having an affair.

So lets see someone who associates with known felons, an unrepentant terrorist and a racist or report on a Palin. There is clear evidence of bias on the media's part. I would hope that when the McCain Palin ticket win, they remember those press rooms that attacked, lied and created stories over the next 60 days. It's one thing to be biased it's another to do the slam pieces they're doing. There are no rules on the White House press core. You really don't need to permit ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN or the Times inside. Play fair now or don't play in the future at all.

Those comments about Obamas ties to those people were hardly hidden from the public. It was hashed and rehashed and when the country lost interest or the majority thought it wasn't worth commenting on it wasn't any longer. I know I personally heard about the minister, and all the crooks a million times. Weren't you listening? Now it's her turn.

They didn't come to light until after guys like Rush and Sean brought them forward. It was like the Edwards affair. It was pretty clear every major player in the DNC knew about this but no one reported it.

On the terrorists, criminals and friends of the Daley machine, I haven't heard Barry explain much. I'd like to hear him explain how he let his two daughters sit in a "church" that preached hate and racism as a part of religious education. If hate is now okay, why did they pull all of Wright's sermons off the site. I bought 2 before they did this and am truly offended. Hate is hate. Racism is racism.

Ayers was a part of a group that supported the destruction of our nation. The assassination of the president was a part of this groups goal. So Barry is friends with a guy that would support his murder if he win the election. Huh. And you guys are claiming McCain didn't vet Palin...

Are these tired old arguments all you have?

Only a very, very small number of Wright's sermons contained the vitriol you mention, and Obama has NEVER been confirmed as attending a single one of them. What is it in Obama's speeches, writings, policies, or actions that compels you to believe he shares ANY of Wright's more controversial views?

Ayers and Obama sat on the same board of directors and lived in the same neighborhood. How does that make them 'friends'? I've seen no pictures of them together. Neither one claims to have anything more than a passing acquaintance with the other. Ayers gave Obama's campaign $200 in 2001. Boy! Obama sure has lots and lots of friends!

His campaign for the senate was kicked off in Ayers' home. That plus he's been associated with him for some time and defended his "friend".

As to the minister. He's been a racist for years. A racist rarely can hide this for 23 years. I don't believe Barry didn't know about this. Again, I still can't believe Michelle and Barry let their daughters listen to crap like this.

He's never explained how they didn't realize or understand black racism. Then again, in the whine and cheese social groups he's associated with, I'm sure it's thought of as nothing more than free speech.

Obama has received more coverage than McCain, but he has also received more negative coverage than McCain. McCain still largely gets a 'pass' by the media. I haven't seen him get 'called on the carpet' for his adultery, his part in the Keating Five, his flip-flopping, his pandering to hate-filled ministers, or his cozy relationships with lobbyists and special interest groups.

                                          Obama took plenty of heat over Wright-gate, bitter-gate, Muslim-gate, Ayers-gate, Resko-gate, etc...

I share the sentiments of many posters on this board: I have little tolerance for whining about smear tactics from the party that titles its political playbook 'Mud Slinging and You".

Actually, the GOP did have much less coverage. I'm sure it was simply a scheduling issue. Then again PBS in Milwaukee cut out the last 10 minutes of McCain's speech here in Milwaukee. I'm sure it will be blamed on a computer glitch or something. Yea right...

As to the -Gates. A lot of fluff and excuses were made but I've never heard a real explanation from Barry. With the big anchors all vying to be his press secretary if he wins, it's all puff pieces.

I've got a question: Who the heck names their child Trig? Is naming kids after esoteric mathematics some kind of Alaska 'thing'?

The meaning of the name Trygg is True, Faithful. it's a Scandinavian name and can be spelled several ways. I attend an old Scandinavian and that's not unusual.
