Scientists receive death threats over "end-of-world" experiment »

Posted By Fedquip 10 months ago in Science & Technology

The scientists behind the world's biggest-ever scientific experiment have received death threats from critics who claim it could cause the end of the world. Experts are attempting to recreate the forces that occurred in the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang, which created the universe. To accomplish this feat, the Large Hadron Collider, located in Geneva, Switzerland, will be switched on this Wednesday. Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University (who also played keyboards on the 1997 UK hit single "Things Can Only Get Better") is among those who have received the threats. He was quick to dismiss the public's fears about the LHC. "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t---." To hear this ex-rock-star and British brainbox talk discuss the LHC in greater detail, check out the video below.

Hey, if they really do bring about the end of the world, it'll be okay. We had a good run.

    4.6 billion years isn't that bad. :-)

LOL "which created the universe"...I bet God is having a chuckle at that one! I can't believe scientists are still going with that theory...they just can't admit that they're wrong. I guess one day they'll figure it out.

What a wonderful talk by Brian Cox! As a former PhD student of Carl Sagan's I can appreciate Brian's ability to convey an exceedingly complex topic in a very compelling manner. I was captivated--and gratified that he recognized Carl's contribution to science communication, which is inestimable.

As far as these knuckle-headed (or perhaps knuckle-dragging) threats re: the LHC, it just shows that ignorance in the world is profound and rampant--and that some idiots, having missed out on the last 4.5 BY of evolution, still have mostly hydrogen and helium in their unexpanded craniums.

Who knows what this thing can do! All I know is they shouldn't be able to turn it on. It's not right for them to create something of that sort at to expect everyone to just sit back and watch!

Why the hell would they ever want to take that big of a risk? 60% is a big risk! Are we really going to let them end the world? Why are ppl just letting this happen?

I think it is highly unlikley that the beginning of the universe began with a "big bang". Just the odds of us getting it right the first time (our theory of "big bang) are a long shot. Maybe the universe is a lot older than we think.

Maybe it will create a mini universe...or maybe we will all die. And lets keep God out of this one shall we? He has no place in science. If god were about science his followers would be called students instead of believers

First of all, why is there a need for such a machine? Science can't even cure a cold how are they going to guarentee this machine will not harm anyone or anything within it's range. For that matter affect the current time line? One would think there are far more important studies to be done.

Remember, scientists are only human. They are just as open to arrogance and narrow-mindedness as anybody else. I just hate how a scientist's word is always taken as 100% infallible by the general public, simply because of the fact that they are a scientist. There have been many times in history when a scientist was not willing to change their opinion on something, regardless of what the evidence may have come to show later on. They tend to be offensive and attack someone who may think differently. Even in the so-called "enlightened" era of today, many scientists have over-inflated egos.

My point is that if the people on this project are not completely sure as to what they are doing, they should let the world know. It is better to let their egos deflate a little bit, rather than to have
a REAL problem occur. I hope that they know what they are doing, but knowing the way things happen in life, I figure some unexpected variables to occur!! Can I say that out loud?!?!

sprite6225 - let me ask you. What are you wearing? Cuase I bet something some scientist who "... just can't admit that they're wrong. I guess one day they'll figure it out" invested the one of the materials associated with what you are wearing. Or maybe you had a vaccine that saved your life. Keep your faith, its fine. If your gonna make a comment like that, live in the woods, don't interact with society cuase your bound to benefit from something a scientist invented or discovered.- yours truly...a scientist

CERN and the collider have been around for years. If people are just hearing about it now and are getting outraged, well, that's their own fault. One of my good friends is in experimental physics. She recently worked at CERN and is convinced that everything will be okay.

Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a... tart? I agree. If scientists thought there was even a remote chance the Large Hadron Collider could destroy the world, they would not have spent years and billions of dollars building it. Sending scientists death threats is the epitome of ignorance.

Don't be so sure, Enrico Fermi and Robert Oppenheimer had a small bet on whether or not the first atomic explosion would set the world atmosphere on fire...

Are these the same gloom & doom critics Who say that humans have caused global warming? What proof do they have? Scientists must continue to experiment which might someday help solve our problems. Congress certainly have not been able to solve our problems.

I just want to know why it is so important that they turn this thing on...what will that accomplice? Who exactly needs to verify how the world was created anyway? If they are right what will that accomplish? Just so they can go to all the people with religion just to say "your wrong"? I think it is better for people to have that wonder. Alot of people NEED to believe there is more. Im not saying which I believe is true, but I just think it is crazy to put our world in danger to prove who is right or wrong.

Protect- The reality is they do not know what will happen if the experiment works this time. They tried before in either 2005 or 2006, and the magnet chain was off. And I'll be quite honest with you that does cause me to worry slightly. The Higgs Particle is greatly unknown. And I do not believe a single scientist with a conscious would be doing this, especially with the 60% chance of "something going awry". It is absolutely ludicrous.

This experiment is 17 miles long and how long did it take to build, somebody knows something about what this can do and the technology supporting it, is from whos minds???? Scientists are very smart people and with the catstophes on earth the past 40 years somebody needed to try something extraterestial who knows maybe a human will come out at the end of the experiment or some fresh dirt lol a modest investment for an unknown return hmmmm.... or is it propaganda???Years ago my Grandfather told me that the items from the incident in Roswell was used to create more sophisticated craft to leave our earth and communicate to and from places they didnt know about and it was impossible to think of such things here on earth, I think he was right. What if we retrieved an aircraft from our future years ago? Would we have used its information in this present day but anyway I think the experiment is safe and confined enough that collateral damage would be confined to those who are monitoring the results, you cant blow up this planet with whats from here and besides were just a speckle in space. Im still trying to find a woman who has morals, maybe I can invent one........
