Every emotion in the world comes racing back through me as I watch it.
Thank you, Mayor Guiliani.
Thank you, Governor Pataki.
Thank you, President Bush.
You were there to lead us through our darkest hours and you showed strength and resolve when many of us couldn't find it within ourselves.
You defined us as a people who could not be defeated by cowards who would not show their faces.
You took the fight to the enemy and showed the world that NOBODY messes with the United States of America without paying for it with everything they have.
We may argue and disagree on many points, but at the end of the day, we're brothers and sisters UNITED and we will not ever be defeated by the likes of the low-lifes that brought so many tears to the innocent just a few years ago.
May we never forget. -

I've told this story before, but I'll do it again.

I was managing a business on the New Jersey side in 2001. I was inspecting the roof with my Maintenance Manager, Jim. He said "Hey, that plane's kinda low." We watched as the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Jim was horrified at such an accident. I immediately replied "that's no accident".
I immediately scrambled to the front office and made sure everyone stayed at their work stations and stayed in the building. I assumed the worst, and wouldn't let anyone leave. I supplied all available radios to the front office and employee break rooms. I authorized outside internet access for the employee break room TV, and for the front offices.
I then had the Plant Engineer call his Commanding Officer (Army Reserve). I called my CO (Navy Reserve). The Plant Engineer was activated within 3 days, guarding George Washington bridge from what we thought were surely more attacks to come. I was not initially activated, but they requested any and all volunteers to help.
I kept the business running, turned it over to my Ops Manager, and made plans to help out. When I arrived for the ferry ride across the river to the World Trade Center, there were already too many volunteers. I refused to leave, and demanded to help out (it was an emotional time). The only job left was ferrying bodies and body parts. For five days I ferried body parts for identification. The first 72 hours was without sleep. No one wanted to leave, in case we found someone alive. We had a few successes, but were mostly disappointed.
The most ironic thing in all of this was that one of the dropoff points for bodies was the Statue of Liberty. Not for long, and not without forethought, but I have a mental picture of rows of body bags neatly lined up under one of the most notable symbols of freedom in the world.
When the local Islamic school let out on 9/11, the Imams had the children circle around and sing "Praise to Allah", "God is great", and other incendiary songs. The police had to forcably hold people back.
A van crashed the gate at the Earle, NJ, Naval Weapons Depot on 9/11. The CO of Earle had gone on full alert, and the driver was fired upon and killed. The van was loaded with explosives. Weapons Depot Earle is near a large residential area. It would have killed thousands.
Never forget. Never let your guard down. But relish the idea that you live in the freest, safest, and wealthiest land in mankind's history.-

September eleven made me - in turns - angry and inconsolable.
Perhaps in retrospect, my response was somewhat reckless, but the very first opportunity after 9/11, I flew with my son to Philadelphia. We walked through the room where the Constitution was voted upon.
Little did I realize at the time that just a couple years later, Conservative Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and others would voice very real concern and horror that George W. Bush's sad, single-minded ideological bent would permit hims to callously use that very real tragedy to undermine the document approved of on that day.
I often wonder if George W. hadn't disregarded Bill Clinton's admonishment that 'Osama bin Laden' will be your biggest concern' ... and instead smugly proclaimed he was busy 'washing the walls of the Oval Office' .... maybe this tragedy could have been mitigated.
But I try to augment the sadness of 9/11 with memories of my son and I walking around Philadelphia and the greatness that was unleashed on that day in 1787.
May we never forget 9/11, and may we never forget the concepts and freedoms that our founders created on that day in 1787. We need to always protect both from those who seek to minimize their impact. -

Commissioned in March 2008, a year before it was due. They have turned out plows in to swords. -

Throughout my life there have been a few events that have really sshocked me and 9/11 was one of them and it seems that most of them have happened in the US. I think that the saddest part of it was the loss of all those who's job it is to try and help. The one thing that impressed me in the days following 9/11 was how everyone pulled together and there was none of this bs like we are having now with the election . I find it sad to think that the only time that Americans what to pull together is when there is a crisis.

We should not forget those who died on that day and maybe it would be nice if people just thought about what it meant to be an American in the days following 9/11. In those days I was reminded why th US is such a great country, and even as a Canadian I will say God Bless America.
