Why wouldn't the rest of the world be interested in the direction of the United States? They've all had a chance to read the mission statement of the PNAC and their quest for world domination. The majority of the people who were in the audience when Obama made that comment (those people in the audience would be fiendish Obama supporters) even many of them got up and cheered, many of them believed that Obama was referring to Palin. I can only think that millions of Americans all across the country also had those same thoughts. I do know that was the very first thing that came to my mind when I heard Obama say that. So why is it that you want to make this out to be some kind of conspiracy that only the republicans could conjure up?
Obama said it, we heard it, and most of us had only one thought as to what Obama was referring to.
Although, it is very likely that Obama wasn't even thinking of Palin when he said it. But that does not change the fact as to what people thought and what they beleive he meant by it. It is what it is, and the damage has already been done to Obama....-

You have no idea what "many of them believed". Did you survey a statistically significant portion of them to come to that conclusion? You know only what YOU want to believe about what he said.
Believe it or not, (and frankly I don't care which) I made no association with Sarah Palin when I heard his remarks. I still don't know how anyone could make that connection based upon what he said.
Words like "many" and "most" without any factual basis mean exactly nothing.-

Either you are very obtuse or just plain ignorant. Remember the Joke that Palin told in her acceptance speech? Or are you one of the few that didn't hear it. The lipstick on a pig comment is not funny but illustrative of a point. Why do you think the audience erupted into laughter half way through the remark and even louder when he finished that remark. Something not funny and people stand up and loudly laugh.

Ah so you can read minds( I guess all Republican spinsters can do that)
I do know that was the very first thing that came to my mind when I heard Obama say that.
But did you hear anything else, like what he was talking about. The pig in question was the policies of the Bush Administration that McSame has vowed to continue. Now I don't assume that millions of Americans who heard the entire speech had those same thoughts. I will assume those who beleive he was referring to Palin, McSame (or any living person and not the actuall policies Barak was talking about) are the ones who picked it up the sound byte on their favorite hate radio station.
But that is the SOP for the psuedo-conservatives. They're not really conservative and they don't really tell the truth.
Obama said it, we heard it, and most of us had only one thought as to what Obama was referring to.
Who's we? The only ones I know that thought Barak was referring to a person were people who only heard the sound byte. The ones who heard the entire speech know he was talking about policy.
Just like McSame was calling Hillary's plan the pig, not Hillary.-

You ignore the backdrop of that comment. Palin told a joke that lipstick figured into. That joke was widely sent around to most people. It is identified with Palin as representative of her attitude. "What's the difference between a soccer mom and a pit bull. A soccer mom wears lipstick." Didn't you know that joke? most people in this country did. His pig comment was just illustrative and NOT funny. So why the eruption of laughter when he had just half of that out? Why the louder eruption of laughter when he finished it. He is supposed to be this super smart man. Why would he make a remark that would be obviously connected to Palins joke? Did his speech writers slip one over on him? If they did why didn't he catch it?

Exactly my take on it. I had to listen to commentators to undo the disdain I had for him saying it. They (on FOX) explained that he didn't mean to connect his remark to Palin. I have my doubts now and my original impression may have been right.-

The supposed offending remark was written along with the fish comment but the fact that the crowd applauded the pig line, broke the comment up into two parts. The response from the GOP side seems to indicate that there is some concern this woman has issues. But keep her locked away and they can be avoided. She should not be free from attack. This is politics. It's for the thick skinned.
The truly most offensive comment of this year should be Limbaugh calling Obama a "skinny little man-child". What exactly is the difference between that statement and referring to him as "boy"? Purely coded racism. I can see his stupid listeners smirking now! "

It is very sad, especially on today of all days, that this nation splits itself over two candidates who are both bad. We have to come down to voting on which is the least harmful to our nation. I am a Republican normally though I don't admit to being proud of what has happened. I don't believe that everything President Bush did was wrong, however, I am not stupid enough to say that he has not made major mistakes. However, expecting that either of the current candidates, John McCain or Barack Obama will be an improvement is just wishful thinking by the American people. Of course other nations are interested and should be in what our nation is doing. That goes without saying. My son is in the military, at boot camp right now, and I am scared to death for him. However, he believes in this country, as do I, and he is willing to stand up and lose his life if necessary to defend it. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if the rest of us would use as much energy toward positive thinking and action as we use in bad mouthing everyone else.

I remember how I felt at this time seven years ago and the reaction of this great nation to unite and help others no matter whether they were democrats or republicans. It makes me sick to read some of these posts and realize that as human beings we are supposed to love one another. It doesn't matter who or what Obama was referring to when he said it. What matters is, who the people thought he was referring to. It's apparent that MILLIONS of people beleive he was referring to Palin. Obama really messed up, he should have thought before he said it.

You simply can't know that. It's true that NOW many people (based upon what I'm hearing, I could be wrong), think he was referring to Palin, but you can't say that would be true otherwise.
Further, she has already associated herself with a dog. And not a nice, gentle yellow Lab either. And she did it intentionally. But, nobody on the Democratic side jumped on her for associating herself with a breed of dog known to be anti-social, vicious and a man killer. Every time Obama says something wrong or incorrect it is he "mis-spoke" or "didn't mean" what they all think he did or he was "taken out of context" or he talks and dances around it. You can wiggle all you want but the facts of what happened are there when you listen to what he said then.
Fact - The comment was illustrative in the context it was given and NOT funny.
Fact - The background prior to the comment is Sarah Palins joke using lipstick.
Fact - The audience erupted in laughter when Obama said the first half.
Fact - The audience erupted in louder laughter when Obama said the second half.
There are two possibilities both bad for Obama.
One - He innocently used that illustrative comment and didn't understand the laughter until later. If this is the case what does that say about his thinking things through and being careful in delicate negotiations. He is supposed to be a very smart man and he let this slip through the crack. He really should have known better.
Two - He did it deliberately and tried to make it seem that it was innocent. This would mean that he is not a very nice and in fact quite vicious. -

FWIW, I'm willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt. I don't think he meant to call Sarah Palin a pig. I think he's a horrible speaker when he's away from a teleprompter, and he continuously gets himself into these jams. He's just bad at extemporaneous speech, and not experienced enough to know how to monitor the metre of his comments so he can filter his comments before they come out.

Now let's get back to the issues
It was not a gaffe. The pig with lipstick is the continuation of the policies of the Bush administration. I think most people get that it was a metaphor, he wasn't actually calling anyone a pig. I think it is a good one too, the policies of the current administration stink.
I believe the issue was how similar John McCain's policies are to the current administration. -

I agree the issues have to be discussed. Then wouldn't it just have been smarter to say. It was a dumb comment so we could just move on.
Why or how people defend this is beyond me. It was a trivial comment. Should he have said it. (coming off her speech at the RNC) NO. But he did, instead of saying I goofed and move on, it just reinforces peoples notions this guy cannot admit a mistake.

Senator McCain has repeatedly made the "lipstick" comment about Senator Clinton's health care proposals.
Senator Obama wasn't even talking about Gov. Palin, but rather about Senator McCain and "change".
The suggestion is that Senator Obama was being sexist (while not mentioning or talking about a woman) while Senator McCain is not (while talking about a woman's plan).
Either mentioning "lipstick on a pig" is sexist when talking about a woman or her plan (which McCain did) or it isn't.
Either way, since Senator Obama wasn't talking about a plan from Gov. Palin or about her, he wasn't being sexist.
Is that clear enough?

The laugh tells me that he was aware that the association to Palin's comment would be made. Was it deliberate? Well, he didn't decide not to say it in order to be "politically correct."
I don't think he should have changed the expression he wanted to use because Palin made an offensive joke calling all hockeymoms "pitbulls in lipstick" or "dogs" or "bitches."
I think he was aware of the irony. I think his audience was aware of the irony, and I think it's also quite clear from the full context that he WAS NOT REFERRING TO PALIN as a pig.
But McCain's campaign feigning offense (and I'm sure they're feigning) is not an out-and-out lie. Obama knew the reference would be drawn, and he decided, on the spot, that he didn't care. Palin's 'joke' was much more offensive, anyway.-

You're willing to read one's mind with this assertion. He was talking about McCain. This term has been used many times before, several times by McCain against Hilary Clinton. Other republicans have use it extensively. Now, unless McCain is something other than what he claims to be (a male), there was no gender intended in the comment, just a commonly expressed term referring to McCain's attempt to portray himself as something that he is not.

I agree with you. I'm sure that the comment was about McCain's policies. And I don't think it was a premeditated dig. However, he's a smart man, and I'm sure that when he got to that part of the speech, he realized the similarities to the "lipstick on a pitbull" comment. Maybe he was just laughing at her bad joke, or her bad taste in making it, but I'm quite sure that Palin crossed his mind at that point. Obama's not a dumb man.

He wasn't even talking about her when he made the quip (which happens to be an very old saying that even McCain used in reference to Hillary Clinton before).....he was talking about the plan of McCain's that is like a mirror image of the Bush administration's plan of the past eight years. I hate to think of where we would be if it had not been for the true Leadership of a true Leader in President Bush. And I believe and am witnessing this first hand on may fronts. Just today a staunch Obama supporter that works near me up the road at the Planned Parent hood clinic came in to my office with a toy pig, about 3 inches long, with Lipstick on it and asked me if I'd heard the latest from the Abomination. I looked at her not quiet understanding, then she said Obama finally converted her to be a Republication. Then she told me about the comments about the pig. She said she and the other nurses and the doctor at the clinic all took it for granted and assumed Obama was indeed commenting on Palin. She said she got so mad she had to leave for a while, then sat in her car and cried wondering how she could have been so conned by such empty words of change by Obama. She and I sat down for a couple hours and I gave her a lesson on how our country is supposed to run and on the real differences in Democrats and Republicans and Independents. Well, Obama lost her vote and possibly some more as she spreads the word.

Trogan - I hope women over 35 don't listen to you. What age is appropriate for having a baby? Where did you get the 10,000% number. 10,000% higher risk than what? My youngest Son was born when his Mother was 43 (he turned out just fine). Was she too old? Or should I have demanded an abortion? They test for Down's syndrome early on and if you believe in abortion then you can have it. I listened to the Dr. then and he presented the stats much different than you do. At least Palin kept her baby and loves him.

As far as I can remember the controversy was about sex education in kindergarten and it was not because of teaching about the birds and the bees, but the graphic nature of showing body parts and details of sex. Perhaps they should wait until they are old enough to really understand what the teacher is talking about. There are parents who have another opinion contrary to yours. After all it is the responsibility of parents first and foremost to instill the morals and principles regarding sex. I doubt that sex education for adolescents stops a lot of sex when they get old enough.
By the way, your thought processes and rudeness make you the latest propeller dimwit, unlikely to change anyone who disagrees. Maybe with a little experience you'll pick up a little charm when you try to make your point.

Obama's audience laughed like they thought he was talking about Palin. Her joke about the diff between hockey moms and pit bulls (hockey moms wear lipstick) was well known and the connection was made. He wishes he hadn't said that. Obama didn't mean it to apply to Palin, it was a gaffe. He forgot that his opponent wears lipstick and that she had recently told that joke. So it is poetic justice. I can't count the number of times the Dems, including Obama himself, claimed that McCain wanted to stay in Iraq 100 years. Of course that is ridiculous if you listen to McCain's point which was however long it takes. Like me saying I want that new Prius I love even if it cost me a million bucks. Same for mccain, I commend him for his service...do I feel he is qualified to be president? no I think he is a liar and will stop at nothing till he is president so he can continue the madness that we are experiencing now....If you think mccain is all about you perhaps you need to check out his past votes at www.mccainrevealed.org and see unless your worth millions he is NOT about you no matter how good the media spins him out to be.....

Let's continue on this downward spiral. 1. The dollar set record lows with even the Swiss Franc being worth more than the almighty dollar. 2. Spending $billions in Iraq for no reason other than so that Big Oil and Halliburton can reap $billions. 3. The national debt doubled to $10 trillion. 4. The housing and credit crisis ongoing and neverending because the U.S. is more concerned about the rest of the world. 5. Healthcare costs exploding even though I don't go to doctors because they will prescribe drugs which will kill you anyhow with 150,000 people dying yearly from taking prescribed drugs. 6. The stock market has actually dropped by 700 points since January 2000. 7. Gasoline prices has more than doubled. 8. Jobs being exported overseas so that CEOs can simply ripoff the companies. For example, the former UnitedHealth CEO ripped off the company for $millions if not $billions. I have never seen a CEO worth 1/10th of what they actually get paid. The dumbing down of America simply continues.

If mccain and palin are so willing to lie and deceive the american public...case in point...mccain calls himself and maverick...but voted with Bush over 90% of the time and is going to take on lobbyists, yet has several running his campaign and let's not forget mccain pretending to be in a cone of silence, and now he is spreading outright lies about Obama and sex education....why do you think he isn't going to lie with his stance on abortions esp since that seems to be the number one reason most evangelicals want to elect him? I guess the expression wolves in sheeps clothing does not apply here? -

Can anyone tell me why mccain has not opted out of this taxpayer funded health care plan the one that is so bad for you and me when he can purchase any insurance plan in the world? I am having difficulty understanding why it is so bad when he still is using it....

Politician is synonomous with liar. It isn't just McCain willing to lie. Obama has clearly shown he is willing to lie. Biden has shown he is willing to lie. And now Sarah Palin has shown she is willing, if not to lie, at least to leave out all of the truth in some of her statements. You partisans are hilarious.

The problem with this article is that it starts out with a false premis, that it is obvious that it is a lie that Obama was talking about Palin. Many people disagree with that opinion making this another case of "he said she said".

Why isnt the christian right recognizing that mccain is a liar and a deceiver? Isn't lying in the bible to? Oh I think I get it....mccain says he is against abortion but lying must be okay so that makes it okay to continue to support him? But if he is a liar, how do you know he isnt lying about his stance on abortion?
