Really appreciate the honesty here. Drugs can help so many people; they can also be abused. There's a balance that can be found. There's also a ton of ignorance among many -- Scientologists being only 1 example -- about the value of medicine to help people cope with formerly thought-of purely "mental"-psycho-social disorders.

The willingness to criticize so-called Big industries has grown exponentially since the depredations of the tobacco industry were laid bare in the 70's and 80's. I've always felt that big pharma is probably the least deserving of attack, but I'm afraid it's become a kind of reflexive response with some people toward any industry that posts a high stock price.

God knows, without pharmacology, and LOTS of it, I'd have been in my grave a decade ago. -

Anti-depressants may have saved my life. They definitely make it better. Many of us need chemical balancing just to be "normal." Any such treatment, though, should be monitored by a qualified psycho pharmacologist. That's my take.

One of the problems is that the lines between science and commerce are blurred...the top universities now own many medication patents. It's so expensive to research and develop a drug -- then when the patent expires, the company loses. It's not that I'm sympathetic to Big Pharma, but I've worked for one and know that dealing with drug costs are a multi-industry endeavor...one we need to tackle. Ok...off for a refill....
