The Palin-Whatshisname Ticket »
Posted By hyperbola 1 year, 2 months ago in NewsMcCain stands revealed as a guy who can be easily rolled by anyone who sells him a plan for “victory,” whether in Iraq or in Michigan. A McCain victory on Election Day will usher in a Palin presidency, with McCain serving as a transitional front man, an even weaker Bush to her Cheney.
The ambitious Palin and the ruthless forces she represents know it, too. You can almost see them smacking their lips in anticipation, whether they’re wearing lipstick or not.

In the 2008 US presidential campaign, Rich appeared to have aligned himself with Democratic candidate Barack Obama: he has written over fifteen different editorials in support of Obama or in criticism of Obama's opponents and detractors[2], including Hillary Clinton.
Reply
Rich graduated from Harvard in 1971, where he was editorial chairman of the Harvard Crimson, studied American History and Literature, and lived in Lowell House. Before joining the Times in 1980, he was a film critic for Time.

FTA: "Obama’s one break last week was the McCain camp’s indication that it’s likely to minimize its candidate’s solo appearances by joining him at the hip with Palin. There’s a political price to be paid for this blatant admission that he needs her to draw crowds."
Reply
I think there is more to this decision than McCain's need to use Sarah Palin to attract crowds. My guess is that the Republicans are just scared of letting her say anything on her own because every answer, or lack of it, that she gives to any question may further demonstrate her ignorance. -

"If he focuses voters on the 2008 McCain, the Palin question will take care of itself."
Reply
Now that's optimism. That is assuming that the American electorate is capable of basing their choice for president on facts and not fiction, that truth is more important than fear mongering.
We all know that the last election showed that they have yet to be able intelligently interpret the facts laid out for them, even if they are presented in a way that you would think your average high school student would be able to understand.
From what I've seen happening up until now, I wouldn't count on it.
It's time for the American electorate to take their heads out of their butts, base their choices on facts, not fictions and partisan party loyalties. If not, November will be marked by the flush that will be heard around the world, as a once fine nation circles the bowl and disappears into the septic tank of history. -

FTA: "Palin is not only the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket, but she is young, vibrant and a Washington outsider with no explicit connection to Bush or the war in Iraq. That package looks like change even if what’s inside is anything but."
Reply
I'm really amazed at how the packaging can be sold as the real goods. Why don't Americans look inside the package. I can understand the right-wing; they like what they are getting, but how is it possible that the so-called independents can't see beyond the packaging?-

It was also discovered that, while at Syracuse Law School, Biden had plagiarized a law review article in a class paper he wrote.
Biden said the act was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and Biden was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F in the course.
Biden also released at the same time the record of his grades as an undergraduate which were C's and D's and an F in ROTC during his first three semesters.
Further, when questioned by a New Hampshire resident about his grades in law school Biden had claimed falsely to have graduated in the "top half" of his class, (when he actually graduated 76th in a class of 85 .
1988
Democratic presidential candidate Joseph R. Biden Jr., a U.S. senator from Delaware, was driven from the nomination battle after delivering, without attribution, passages from a speech by British Labor party leader Neil Kinnock.
A barrage of subsidiary revelations by the press also contributed to Biden's withdrawal: a serious plagiarism incident involving Biden during his law school years; the senator's boastful exaggerations of his academic record at a New Hampshire campaign event; and the discovery of other quotations in Biden's speeches pilfered from past Democratic politicians.

Obviously Palin would make a terrible VP or P.
But as a publicity stunt, she provides a boost.

Same thing he did when he toured Iraq. He endangered how many hundreds of US military personnel by insisting on having his multiple photo-op tours. While their risks were increased because of being near a high profile target, there were less soldiers in the field to cover each other, to cover the road blocks, to cover the civilians and to watch for the bad guys placing IEDs or other.
Reply
Then, the master of the PR stunt had the gall to try to attack Obama for following military protocol in not having a candidate make the troops a publicity stunt.
At least this is something the cons can brag McCain DID NOT flip-flop on. That McCain was for reckless photo ops in combat zones against military protocol both times.

I agree with Hyperbola on the intelligent article comment too.We got the president we deserved in the last election, ,rash, and under educated .never mind he went to college he stopped educating himself after that.Very Narrow minded. The American public does not like anything but sound bite politics and that is why we get this type of politician in office.

once again we find the liberals are afraid of a woman..you had good reason with hillary, she was a socialist in the making, but dead wrong with palin..after watching that edited down version of an interview with charley gibson... this is how the media tries to control the people, distort the actual events if they dont go the way you want them too...go watch the real interview on abc.com that is the whole interview and you will see two different versions, the one that shows a strong palin and the abc edited version where she appears to look confused, also while viewing the real interview remember this, during the mccain obama debate that charley gibson was supposed to be so tough on obama, he explained that the bush doctrine has many meanings before asking each of them what they thought, with palin he asked her what she thought it meant, thats why she asked in what respect charlie? now that was fair and balanced huh? the far left will be swayed by this biased reporting and distorting the facts because they want to be in a socialist controlled country, but the independents are smart enough to check out everything before they decide to cast their vote and thats why mccain is winning the independent vote by 15%...we arnt sheep following a loser down a socialist path......

Wake up. It isn't about liberal and conservative, or at least it shouldn't be. It is about who can best help your country change directions. McCain is a ageing political hack. He is no longer the maverick that you once thought he was. He is now just a desperate old man who would do anything, say anything to get elected. The only reason he chose Palin was to appeal to the religious right.
Reply
Palin is a religious wacko. She isn't just a christian, she's a radical, fundamentalist christian. It is her goal to turn the US into a theocracy. That's something that would have, your much revered founding fathers spinning in their graves.
Much better to take a chance on an relatively inexperienced idealist than to trust an ageing political hack and a religious fundamentalist.

They have so many conservative leaning reporters over there it is sick and they are making it their channels business to protect Palin and be her cheerleader...Why does she need this if she is potentially the leader of the free world I ask you ? And where were all of these gallant men when Hillary was taking a beating in the press,,,No where!!! You yourself show your true colors,,,galantry only for a republican woman...right.....isn"t she the one that can field dress a moose? She should have been able to handle Charles Gibson without you all whining for her.-

Didn't Palin call Hillary Clinton "a whiner" for whatever attacks were aimed at her? From that I would conclude that she likes it 'ruff' with all the bells and whistles that go with it. I don't think the Republicans have figured that out yet and keep claiming that Dems and media are showing her "Disrespect"
Reply
What does the word 'Disrespect' mean for candidates placing themselves so unwittingly into the political caldron for the highest office in the land? Or maybe placed there by someone like McCain really showing her no mercy in the nonvetting process. Just place her there and see if she sinks or swims. How DISRESPECTFUL on his part. And we who question any of the myriad of problem facts about her are 'Disrespectful' !! Enough all ready!!

There are a lot of things in McCain's background that I find troubling. Being at almost the bottom of his graduating class from Annapolis and crashing no fewer than four planes before he crashed the one that caused him to be a prisoner are two that come to mind. I heard him apologize for giving in to torture and saying things against the USA. I guess we cannot vote for a person who didn't give in to torture because they no doubt are dead. The fact that he is still alive definitely does not qualify him to be President. Why are there no questions about his war record or the possibilities of mind control used on him? Then there is the Keating Five during the S crises (not that different from today's financial woes), and of course the whole sordid affair that got him his very rich wife.

Our country is no longer the one Adlai Stevenson tried to run in as a divorced man. Our moral values as voters has really sunk and we are no longer looking for someone with higher ideals and brains than what we might find in a bar. And we want a person who DEFINITELY is no better than we are. Times have changed and I hope they will change again because we NEED CHANGE !!

Second of all they BETTER tolerate his speech. Is that NOT what they are SWORN to do?Protect the constitution of the United States of America? The problem I have with this piece is that all of Mr. Rich's points stem from a speech given by Sarah Palin as if she had written the speech herself. It was revealed shortly after she made the speech that it had been written by "Bush speechwriters" days before it was presented.
Reply
My guess is that these "Bush speechwriters" were actually Cheney speechwriters, since he actually holds the reins in the White House. It is not a secret that Cheney, Wolfowitz, etc. -- the neocon chickenhawk warmongers -- are the ones writing the U.S. foreign policy which promotes their own agenda rather than placing America first.
I submit that should McCain-Palin win the election, it will be exactly the same as it is now. McCain will be a figurehead, just like Bush, and the Cheney PNAC cabal will be running the show with Palin as a willing accomplice. After all, her beliefs are as close to those of the neocons as you can get.
McCain was willing to sell his soul to the devil in order to become president -- a legacy which appears to be his highest priority. What exactly was the deal he made? Once elected, is he willing to step aside and let the real bosses take over? That's the way it looks to me. Palin is the perfect tool for the Cheney cabal to continue their traitorous and destructive PNAC plans.-

She may appear to them to be a tool they can use but I would still be uncertain and a little scared of the eschatology some on the right profess. This may not be the PNAC's eschatology but might very well be hers. I do not trust MCCain/palin with access to the nuclear button. Do you?

Well lloyd, the evidence that you have been fleeced by the corrupt politicians and oligarchs who feed you such slogans is piling up everyday.
Reply
Your children have been saddled with more than $3 trillion in debt for bushies silly wars, which McCain is desperate to continue. The real reason for this has nothing to do with a "war on terror", but rather with corruption kickbacks to the "politically connected".
Military Industrial Complex 2.0 - Privatizing the Pentagon
The Pentagon's key role as war fighter has increasingly become privatized. In Iraq, a Congressional Budget Office report revealed that the U.S. has already spent at least $100 billion on private contractors.
President Bush will leave office boasting that the United States has the most powerful and professional military machine in the world. We have paid dearly for this machine in the past seven-plus years. The bill for all that might and muscle comes to more than $3.8 trillion since 2001 -- plus another $900 billion plus for actually flexing it in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.
And if the U.S. military machine is now both oversized and staggeringly expensive, it is also more prone to breakdown in a more dangerous and unstable world. So think of George W. Bush's legacy to us as a Pentagon bloated almost beyond recognition and crippled by its dependence on private military corporations.

I cannot understand how any intelligent, knowledgeable, caring person, could vote for McCain! He has been in office for over 25 years--that;s, 25 years. Do you really think he is going to change from his ways and suddenly start caring about the American people and the economy? In additin, I truly believe that both he and his girl pal, Palin, are two war mongers!
Reply
Just look at their records--Right off the bat, Palin staryts talking about war with Russia-! she kills innocent animals, leaves her baby with Down Syndrome and goes off seeking personal recognition, also leaving her teenage pregnant daughter. An d, McCain--he threatens countries at the drop of a hat, with war! He would say and do anything to become President--not to help the people, but, to help himself and his power driven, 300,000 an outfit, wife--you know, the 200 million dollar youngster he had an affair with while he was married to the poor wife who was disfigured in an accident! My friends, family and I, cannot stand either McCain or Palin. They are both weird--very weird! Thank you.- -
