Battle for Bronze: Propeller and Mixx Fight for 3rd »

Posted By DiffeeOnline 1 year, 3 months ago in Science & Technology

There is Propeller, formerly Netscape, the once proud pioneer in the web browser world that transformed itself into the ultimate Digg-killer and fell short. In the other corner is Mixx, the spunky startup that grew as the Digg alternative with innovative features and speedy adjustments to its identity. As of today, they are neck and neck on Alexa.

Well, prompted by your story, I went and had a look at Mixx. The stories were often dumber and the discussion less informative than on propeller.

If propeller would restore the more efficient mechanisms for finding interesting stories that we used to have, it would lose fewer people.

I'm surprised to see that they are neck and neck on Alexa. I'm assuming that it has something to do with the new Propeller and the subsequent loss of members.

I'm convinced that there is no better site for informative and intelligent debate on the Web than Propeller.

In general, Propeller did not live up to many of the expectations that came from the redesign, however, after using the site, I now feel that it has more of the features that we need, if we can just learn to use them.

Part of the problem is that Propeller is not getting its name out there as much as it could. Another problem is that people are not using the "Reflect on XXX" as much as they could.

Propeller rocks, but more people need to know about it.

      PROPELLER FOREVER!!!

James, I still don't really understand what our community is getting out of groups. Do people have conversations on them. I mean, do we, as a community, REALLY use the groups for conversation? Do we use them at all? Seems like a lot of wasted bandwith to me.

And if I could have one thing back it would be PAGES, not a single enormous blob of never ending comment that, for some reason, vanishes completely on me every time a comment string gets around 300 comments. PLEASE bring pages back for comments. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

On the plus side, the article used the old logo and not professor spinhead

I agree with ind06 about paging, the 2 most important features we're still missing are comment related:

      1. We lose the conversation at 300 comments... it just disappears. Pages are probably needed to solve that problem (and they also make following the comments easier

      2. The ability to jump directly to a comment is something we all want. How can you have a conversation/discussion when you can't easily "hear" if your statement has been replied to?

      3. Bring back the categories. This should be a trivial fix that makes a lot of people happy.

      4. Show categories AND sources in the front-page view. This is vital information for determining what stories are trusted and of interest.

Propeller has been plagued by poor decisions of late. Their much-anticipated redesign was a failure in the eyes of many users and observers.

      Naw really?

      That’s an understatement!

This article needs one MAJOR correction. Propeller.com and mix are not fighting for #3... Propeller was ranked #2 in the social news world for close to 2 years..... Mixx has moved up quickly to take #3, and is now giving us a run for our money..

Meanwhile Reddit has been #4 for over a year now...... Check the graph here for proof:
