Suggesting that someone not rush into an agreement hardly rises to a violation of the Logan Act.

I'm not sure the Logan Act applies to sitting US Senators anyway. If it did, McCain wouldn't be able to talk to the Georgians, would he (much less bring Graham and Lieberman with him)?

§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments.
Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.
      1 Stat. 613, January 30, 1799, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 953 (2004).

The questions to ask are: What authority was Obama granted by being a US Senator? What was his intent with his "chat" about delaying negotiations? And, did Obama know what the U.S.'s intentions were with regards to troop withdrawal negotiations? If he was given authority, then there is no story here...

I truly don't know the answer to this question - that is why I said we would need to know what authority is granted a US Senator.

What authority was granted McCain (and Lieberman, and Graham) to engage the folks in Georgia?

John is a personal friend of their president. As to Joe, I don't remember him openly negotiating with them or acting as a representative of the United States.

Still BB64 the circumstances are the same but I have to agree with you that John McCain is a personal friend of G W Bush. If fact McCain wants to carry the torch and stay the course for Bush when he leaves.
"As to Joe, I don't remember him openly negotiating with them or acting as a representative of the United States."
And I don't recall Bush asking him to do it. What's the difference?? Oh wait. I know now. One is a Republican which makes it OK and the other is a Democrat which makes it wrong. LMAO

And how does being a personal friend override the provision cited above?

              MeaJen30,

What authority did Sarah Palin have to talk to the Georgian President and to assure him of her and McCain's support?

Well, let's see, the policy we have on Georgia is that we support them, and want them in Nato, and think that Russia was wrong to attack them. So Palin can reiterate that sentiment because it doesn't try to "defeat the measures of the United States of America." However, Obama talking to Iraq and telling them to stall on troop withdrawal is a directive that is trying to "defeat the measures of the United States of America." That is the difference. If you agree with our policies/measures, and say so, you are not trying to defeat them, if you go against the policies/measures, then you are trying to defeat them. That simple!

Could you clarify for me what kind of troop withdrawal policies/measures were in place before he went to Iraq that he could possibly have been able to delay?
