Some people find it impossible to believe that anyone could possibly disagree with Obama for policy reasons, or heaven forbid, actually like Sarah Palin. We will see a lot more of this race card being played before election day, and after election day too, if Obama loses.

The first line said it. "The differences between Barack Obama and John McCain couldn't be more well-defined." That is why Obama is slipping. People are beginning to find out who he is and where he stands on issues.

When Obama was only seen as the first viable black presidential candidate people became enthused about him BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. Many now no longer see him as the first viable Black candidate, but another clone of the long line of liberal candidates with positions that run counter to the average American. -

I see a lot of people getting drunk on highmindedness with Barack Obama's candidacy. They are too much a part of the historical perspective to have an analytical perspective. We STILL don't know much about this guy, except what he's told us.

There's two sides to that coin Karly. Some people find it impossible to believe that anyone could disagree with Palin for policy reasons. Or the fact wthat McCain is elderly and has been diagnosed with cancer 4 times. This makes the posssibility of this person becoming president more than just likely. The sex card is being played by Republicans. Everytime questions are raised about Palin it raises the hair up on conservatives' necks and the sex card is played quite often. They don't even want her interviewed on foreign policy for chrissakes! The questions were to hard. Obama went through this vetting for almost two years and conservatives felt perfectly justified to leave no stone unturned. Yet this governor comes on the scene as a nobody and when people ask questions or start digging into her past people claim sexism.

in a desperate attempt to become elected the Obama campaign and all his supporters have been playing the race card since the election cycle began. Not surprisingly the MSM soon picked up on this and began trumpeting it through this election year. No you simply MUST BE FOR OBAMA ANYTHING ELSE IN UNACCEPTABLE. WE ARE THE CHOSEN ONES, WE HAVE BEEN ORDAINED TO CHANGE THE WORLD, BELIEVE IN US AND BE SAVED, ANYTHING SHORT OF THAT IS HERESY AND ALL UNBELIEVERS SHALL BE PUNISHED. If you are not a supporter of Obama it is simply because you are racist. It doesn't matter if you agree with his policies, or lack of experience (a total of 143 days on the Senate floor, and a failed community organizer before that) it is simply you are a racist. As far a Washington insiders are concerned Obama picked the ultimate Washington insider ( 35 years) as his running mate Joe Biden.

Alph, no, I think most sane people find it hard to believe that right wingers are still pretending to have a thoughtful, rational, morally defensible approach to deciding who they should elect to run their country (particularly after their behavior over the last 8 years and after the GOP nominated a candidate cons despise and who doesn't represent their values). What most Americans find hard to understand is why cons think they have anything to be proud of after the colossal horrific trainwreck Bush and the GOP have made out of the US.
Reply
Don't cons here realize that after you elect George Bush twice, your credibility and personal judgement have been confirmed to be FUBAR and warped in all conceivable ways? This is why we don't believe cons when they pretend to be speech, voice, and diction experts and we don't believe them when they regurgitate crap about "socialism" (particularly now as we're seeing the tragic results of socialized capitalism on our economy more and more each day--please cons, now STHU about the "free market"). It doesn't work. We know you've been lying all along so please don't try to peddle this crap anymore. Thanks. ;-(

There is the "Dinkins" effect. In every entry and exit poll Mayor Dinkens beat the challenger, Rudy Guiliani, in the NYC mayor race. The only poll Rudy won, was the one that counted, the election. The lesson is that racism is alive and well and does not show up in polling. If NY City had the effect, imagine how much greater it is, in less cosmopolitan areas. The Republicans have feasted on wedge issues and race for decades. The current polling should not even be close given the failures of the current administration and its low approval rating. Add to that an unpopular war and a poor economy and the incumbent party should be 10 points down. Race is a huge part of Obama's problem. Sad but true.

It also is called the Bradley effect. In reality it is a form of reverse racism, not actual racism as you suggest. What it means is people who are polled do not want to appear to be racist to the poll taker who is in their face, or on their phone, so they mis-state their preference to pollsters. They fear being labeled racist - as in the CNN article and the comments here - by their policy views, when they are contrary to those of a minority candidate playing the race card like Obama and his followers have been. So, where intimidation is not present in the voting booth, the voters are free to vote their policy preference.

well, after knowing that McCain rejected and fought against the MLK holiday even after it was made into a national holiday and knowing that McCain voted against divestment of american funds in south africa's apartheid regime and voted against sanctions that would have punished the south african govt. for their apartheid policies during that same time, the answer is NO. -

Since most polls are conducted by phone I would think unless I had one of those D!ck Tracey two-way wrist radio phones (that would be just SO COOL!) I wouldn't care what I said because they wouldn't know what the color of my skin was anyway. And even if they somehow magically did (or non-magically, had simply asked me) my answer to your question would be "Of course I would, why should I be any more or less ashamed to tell a pollster my vote than any other person?"
I see a lot of assumptions being made here and I don't understand how you think this helps you. The poll numbers are what they are, pretending that they're not... what good does that do you?
I know who I'm voting for but I don't want to sit around discussing reasons why what's going on may not actually be what's going on and an appearance of losing is actually the sign of a titanic win, or vice-versa. I want the truth. Polls aren't infallible, and at best are simply a snap shot of a moment in time, but they've proved to be pretty reliable. At any rate, they're the best we've got.
In my life, on this very site actually, there have been numerous times when I've been painfully reminded of Walter Matthau teaching the Bad News Bears why one should never assume. I try to take that lesson with me.
But I'm just the comedy guy. :) -

lilaws - well said - however, what I don't get is why people get so angry when called on this. Why does it bother the racist so to be told that he is what he is? I have always said there is no such thing as the race card, if what is being said is true. Then you are being told you are using the race card only to silence your truth! In essence the race card statement is being used by the racist to promote his racism, you are being called a racist by the racist!

Reply
No, that's not the message. The message is that since about 70% of the population is dissatisfied with the current administration, and since the Republican Party offers more of the same, it would be logical that the Democrats lead by a large margin. One explanation for the even split is racism.
Do you have a better explanation? In what way would the McCain/Palin government be different from the Bush/Cheney government? I listened to Sarah Palin as she attempted to answer this question during the Charlie Gibson interview, but all I heard was vague promises to "make government better." I'm listening; explain to me how the world truly is. -

I believe the question Jack Cafferty asked was, IF Sen. Obama loses, did race play a part in the loss?

Which is exactly the question you just asked, minus the "This is sick" part.
I don't blame you, that question, which was the original title, has been re-worded to be a statement of fact so that might be confusing.

After the last 8 years of Republican destruction, this election should be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, we are not as far along in society as many people think. Any white man who could put two words together would be way ahead in the polls. This man, as thoughtful, intelligent, and well-spoken as he is, is struggling in the polls. It's his color. In talking politics with several of my clients whom are african american, I find some of them who will vote for BO are doing so because of race not policy! Therefore if the candidates races were switched we would have a good number of blacks voting for JMC. Now that is ignorant racism. People we need to look at the policies a candidate stands for and decide which one will hurt us the most and vote accordingly.

I can understand how you feel, but, may I ask you to reconsider not voting at all? There are other options on the ballot for the Presidency, the small parties. I'm disgusted myself, but I think for myself, instead of giving up my right to vote I'll register my dissatisfaction by showing support for someone other than the 2 parties in power. I am well aware the smaller parties won't win, this time, but the more good hard working people that sit home the more power the big "2" have, and most important, the closer we get to having our right to vote taken from us. The more votes the smaller parties get, the more "they" know we won't stand for much more of this cr*p.-

It's kind of hard to think that race isn't a factor in this election. What we must understand is that racism works both ways. You shouldn't vote for Obama because he is black if you don't know what he stands for. And on the other side, don't vote for McCain because you don't want a black president. Whoever wins will lead this county for four years, please people look beyond the color of the skin of the candidates and listen to where they want to lead us as a country.

I think its extremely naive to believe race plays no part in this race, both for and against Obama. There are some who will vote for Obama simply because he is black, just as there are those who won't consider voting for him because he is black. That is simply a fact in a country where race plays such a huge part in people's lives and decision making process.
Reply
Conversely, there are many in this election making a reasoned choice that race plays no part in at all. They are basing their decision on policy stance and the political promises made by each candidate.
All that being said, the fact that we have polls indicating 80% of the people believe we're on a collision course with disaster, yet those same polls show a 50%-50% split between a candidate proposing change and a candidate proposing "stay the course" then it does beg the question as to why. If they are all voting based on the issues, then the same 80%-20% split should exist, but it doesn't. Is race the issue that creates such a disparity? Perhaps, although I think its impossible to know for sure since most people would never admit to racism being a factor in their own decision making process. I think to believe it plays no part at all, however, is pretty unrealistic.-

The only reason Obama is not soaring in the polls by double digit numbers is simply because he is black! There is a dark underbelly of our society that is racist, homophobic, anti-semitic, ageist, and every other ugly trait that goes against the purity and nobility of our human American spirit. It's complete reverse-racism. "I'll call the other guy a whitey-hater so I can get away with being racist". You prove it by referring to in quotes "african americans" (as a whole, by your implication) COLLECTIVELY "throwing race in your face every time things don't go their way". Then you try and compensate for your racist rant by saying that they are an embarrasment to "upstanding blacks". The fact is, whether or not ANYONE else is a racist, you most DEFINITELY are, as is proven by your comment.
Of course, now you'll just say I'm playing the race card, even though simple paragraph comprehension betrays you as at the VERY LEAST a bigot.
Reverse racism. It's the new thing. Call the black guy whitey hating racist so you can get away with trashing him and not feeling bad.
You make me sick.
