    Lyrics

    "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)"

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
    Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
    They would not listen
    They did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now

    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
    Colours changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand

    Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
    They would not listen
    They did not know how
    Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
    On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

    Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
    They would not listen
    They're not listening still
    Perhaps they never will...

In recent years, the song has become even more well known thanks in part to Josh Groban’s successful version and to the song being sung by contestants on high profile shows such as American Idol and BBC Fame Academy.

        Thanks socialexpert -

The song describes different paintings by van Gogh.
Don McLean wrote the lyrics in 1971 after reading a book about the life of the artist. The following year, the song became the #1 hit in the UK and #12 in the USA. For several years, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam played the song daily

Great job spade. Groban has an excellent voice--almost too good for this song. I especially liked the effects on the paintings--changing color palettes, panning from one part to the other, etc. True artistry.

                        Thanks Formidable!
Most of you who have seen my videos know quite well how much I enjoy van Gogh's paintings. I did not want to make this video until I felt more experienced, as his paintings truly deserve it. The depth and spirituality within his pieces have brought many a smile and tear to my face -- and many others all over the world, I'm sure.

Anything featuring the work of Vincent Van Gogh has special power and potency. You've done well with this work Spade. Van Gogh's work has added power resulting from his bungled suicide and subsequent death, days later. He is one of the very few artists whose work is enhanced by a knowledge of his troubled life and rapid onset epilepsy. He produced some of the greatest 2-dimensional images in history.

Thanks, Spadecaller. As I once explained, "Lust for Life" was showing in the local theater when I took the "Art Appreciation" class. So for that semester, van Gogh was everyone's favorite. He still is mine (obviously.)

Wow. Vincent van Gogh was such an extradordinary talent. Groban too, although I'm still partial to Don McLean's version. Groban does a beautiful job with the song, though. Thanks for sharing this.
