October First will be a seminal day in U.S. History. Either the Congress will finally admit that they are more concerned with their ideological base, or they will get out of the way, end the moratorium on offshore drilling and allow the nation to declare Energy Independence Day.

The facts do not support offshore drilling as a solution to our energy needs. That is just bogus political propaganda generated by the very people who are already profiting at the expense of the American people who are not being compensated for the land we lease to the oil companies.

We have better and cheaper alternatives, but some Americans are suckers for the fast talking politicians who care nothing about their constituents except their vote on election day and the money they make from their deals with the lobbyists.

    FTA
" This bill is little more than a cynical political manipulation. If the bill is passed by the Senate and sent to the President and he vetoes it since it doesn’t actually accomplish anything—except, perhaps, driving up electricity costs—then Democrats can go home to campaign saying that they tried to pass energy relief and the Republicans stopped them. You lose. If the President signs it, then we can expect a lot of money to be spent on long-term projects while we become accustomed to ridiculously high energy prices. Again, you lose. We all lose."

Politics aside, I posted this article to drive home this point

FTA "High energy prices are hurting individuals, they are hurting business, and they are hurting the nation as a whole. These high costs are driving inflation as well as unemployment. As a nation, we have neither the time nor the resources to play the kind of political games implicit in legislation like The Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act—too much is at stake. The country needs relief, not consortiums; lower gas prices, not ongoing restrictions."

Thanks to Ike my house is now energy independent and has been for the past 11 days.

BTW My father is a retired geophysicist and he has looked at the data from offshore east and west coasts. The east coast has some prospects but they are very deep. Out west there are some promising formations but in the 70's there were alot of dry wells north of the LA basin, so the company he worked for stopped drilling.
