Lalit Kishore Choudhary, 47, the head of the Indian operations of Graziano Transmissioni, an Italian-headquartered manufacturer of car parts, died of severe head wounds on Monday afternoon after being attacked by scores of laid-off employees, police said. The incident, in Greater Noida, just outside the Indian capital, followed a long-running dispute between the factory's management and workers who had demanded better pay and permanent contracts.
According to reports, Choudhary had summoned about 100 workers to discuss a possible reinstatement. A police spokesman said: "Only a few people were called inside. About 150 people were waiting outside when they heard someone from inside shout for help. They rushed in and the two sides clashed. The company staff were heavily outnumbered."
Other executives said they were lucky to escape with their lives. "I just locked my room's door from inside and prayed they would not break in. See, my hands are trembling even three hours later," an Italian consultant, Forettii Gatii, told a local newspaper. More than 60 people were arrested and more than 20 were in hospital yesterday. If you can kill a CEO because the CEO sent jobs overseas, then, I can kill YOU for buying imported goods. THAT IS THE REAL REASON FOR JOBS GOING OVERSEAS. We continue to buy the cheap import goods and because domestic manufacturing can't compete, CEOs have no choice.

try buying a completely "made in the usa" auto for instance. It may say "dodge" or "ford" on the hood, but underneath it is japan, china or korea.

I don't care how greedy or unethical the CEO was (if he was at all), he still didn't deserve being bludgeoned to death by an angry mob. Also to PilotDave, India's predominant religion is Hindu, not Muslim, and by quite a majority. You have no idea what you're talking about, and you can't attribute the crimes of a few to a country of over a billion (with a "b"). Jeffrey Dahmer killed an ate his victims. I always hear the comment about greedy companies and their CEO's regarding outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries; BUT, I never read a comment about American Consumer's normal practice of purchasing the lowest cost (Cheapest!) items when they go shopping as being the baseline problem. As a company CEO I have first hand experience with my domestic (American) customers apologizing to us when they decide to purchase capital equipment from one of our foreign competitors because it's less expensive. They explain that they have no choice because they have to compete here in the US for American Consumer's dollar's against imported foreign product's. American's need to start looking out for themselves and their own country first. It starts with be willing to pay a little more for consumer good's. In this way we will protect our standard of living by keeping American's employed!

I remember the cheap toys and cars coming in from Japan in the 1960s and 70s. Initially, they were NOT BETTER, but they were CHEAPER. People bought them. They complained, but, they still bought them.
Japan's first success was in electronics, where they eventually surpassed us in quality. Automation (which labor unions here opposed) offered better reliability and lower labor costs.
This success eventually found its way into cars and other products.
BTW - Have you been to any Asian country? In Japan a decade ago, they would pay 3X as much for a Japanese refrigertor rather than buy an American refrigerator. In China, they will buy American cars (Buicks, Fords), but only if made in China. The Chinese and Japanese understand the need to support their neighbor. We haven't figured that out, yet. As consumers, we are too greedy. We demand loyalty from our CEOs, but, refuse to practice it ourselves!
We believe we deserve our own high wages and benefits, but, when we walk into the retail store, we essentially, say, "But, my neighbor does not!"-

I would put the problems down to something else. Starting in the 1980s with the Reagan administration, we began transferring American wealth to the super-rich. Already during the Reagan administration, 40% of Americans lost their savings and became net debtors (and, as such, MUST buy the cheapest products).

We were told this would lead to better investment and improved allocation of resources, which would "trickle-down" to Americans. What we really see with the latest financial crash is that the super-rich were incompetent (and greedy) in investing American wealth in ways that benefited Americans.
We were also told that this investment would let Americans would move up-market and and become the "brains" of globalization. Because the super-rich instead gambled the money on the financial markets, we now have the situation where during the Bush administration almost the ONLY kinds of jobs that have grown are those in "service" industries (waitresses, barmen, etc.) and jobs for engineers, scientists, .... have in fact declined.
Until we put wealth back in the pockets of those who will invest in America rather than in get-rich-quick financial scams, the situation will not improve. -

Speaking of refridgerators the one I purchased in Japan was great, had two freezer drawers, and was entirely made of recycled materials. It cost $1400.00 American dollars. Same style here is twice in price but is it any better? No I dont think so but the washing machines and dryers there leave a lot to be desired. Ours are better.

All these comments and ideas are interesting but how do we know he acted on his own? The company was out of Italy, maybe he was told by higher-ups to fire these people and he was just doing his job. We all know they get paid low wages, that is why everybody sources out their labor to these countries. Couldn't care less how many CEO's go down (and in what manner)...most of them deserve it....the more money they make, they more they want, and they'll do anything to get it even if it means taking a company off the map along with its employees and leaving them destitute. American products are so expensive because of executive greed and ONLY because of executive greed !!!! They expect their employees to take concessions and huge pay and benefit cuts,and then turn around and half of that savings into huge bonuses and raises for the executives. Goods made in China and shipped here can be bought cheaper here than in Shanghai. I have done so myself on numerous occassions.
We as consumers continue to beat the retailers down, so they in turn beat the manufacturers down, who then ship jobs overseas.

Let this happen ONCE in the US and maybe these fat cats who are getting rich while ruining the lives of their employees would think twice about lining their pockets while others suffer. I am sick and tired of hearing about record salaries and performance by top companies in the US while the rest of us suffer. Look at the oil industry. They are raking in record profits every quarter while the average American has to decide whether to fill their tank or buy groceries. If this became the norm, the next time you speak with your CEO it may be behind bullet proof glass. Most corporations are not in business to make their employees rich and as long as certain personality types(power crazed junkies) bludgeon their way to CEO positions, this greed at the top of the food chain will continue to exist. I don't think that will ever change because CEO's are expected to be ruthless cut throats and that is one of the reasons they get hired. Although in any business there is truly only so much money to go around and someone always gets the lions share and if a CEO was to give his bonus back to the employees, by the time it was dispersed among the many, it wouldn't appear to be much and most people would be just as dissatisfied with there lives as before. Kinda like getting a check from GWB.

the rage here in the u.s. is about not only a lack of jobs, but that everything is unaffordable due to the low salaries and arrogance of do nothing chief executives who don't know how to run any company, except into the ground. we've had enough. americans are just fed up with it. if it doesn't change and fast (meaning no executive compensation other than salaries with a tight lid) we can look forward to general strikes here. when people have nothing to lose anymore the social contract goes out the window. these guys can't build walls high enough. although, come to think of it prison walls are pretty darn high.

It is unfortunate the CEO was killed. Sounds like they need labor unions in India. We agree with some of the comments below about CEO pay. We have no problems with performance based pay for CEO's and think that is the way it should be. When they do extremely well they should reap the big rewards. But when they run a company into the ground they should get nothing at all. Nothing, not even $1.

Actually, The bonus system for good years is half the problem, you see the CEO just cuts the guts out of the business in those "GOOD years" which in turn creates the "Bad Years!" If the CEO gets bonuses during good years HE should have to PAY back for bad Years even for a few years after his employ to allow full justice for his enacted policies!

I agree. CEO's with their high salaries have affected so many businesses. It is ridiculous CEO's in the auto industry among many others with their million plus salaries is ridiculous. I see Congress may vote on limiting CEO's pay and all I can say is it's about time. Our economy is in shambles, taxpayers are way overtaxed and even people with median and higher income are losing homes due to foreclosure. Our forefathers survived with all these pork belly projects and virtually no taxes. Big government also has to get needless spending. The madness MUST STOP. Our country is in financial ruin.

I do not condone murder BUT I totally understand how these people snapped. Yes, it has happened before, i.e., "going postal", and remember... desperate people do desperate things. Times have gotten extremely desperate for some people with 10,000 people losing their homes every month. I need a job as we speak but you couldn't pay me enough right now to be Raines or a greedy CEO of any company! They are definitely a target and I hope they have really good security people. I also carry a concealed weapon (with a permit). If I'm in a business and somebody starts shooting because they are ****** they lost their job, I want to be able to return fire and maybe save innocent lives... including my own!

In America we don't instate capital punishment for greed, and there's a reason for that. We take the taking of a human life seriously. It is shocking and dismaying how cavalierly some of you talk about the murder of strangers, and how callous you are about the death of this man (who had a family, much as many of you do). You are justifying (and applauding) a brutal homicide of someone you don't know, over circumstances you know nothing about. He didn't murder any of those workers, didn't rape any of them, didn't torture them or kidnap their children. He just laid them off, for reasons that could be perfectly legitimate for all you know. If you brutally murder people who have wronged and angered you, does that make you better than them? Or the same? Or worse? What if their only crime was to fire you?

But to decide arbitrarily and without hesitation that this is a case of corporate greed and that this man deserved death makes is wrong. Here is my take on this. If you look at what a CEO makes ove a period of a yr. I'm right with this. A CEO gets a bonus at the end of the yr that is in the millions. If he would for go the bonus he could keep these people working. But its all about GREED.

Having been in that situation a few times in my professional career I actually find myself applauding this. I was laid off from Travelers Insurance after being bought out by PriMerica. Anytime a firm has to layoff hundreds, or even thousands, of workers at a time to make the shareholders happy with their stock price, it should speak volumes to those who are truly listening. Poor management. Greed. I have been the victim of this STYLE of management. At the same time, CEO's are rewarded for their ability to "create" profit or shareholder value by reducing the cost of doing business or it's "overhead". Their is little thought given to the results while they reap an exhorbitant "bonus" that come on the backs of those who were eliminated. All with the approval of those shareholders who keep these individuals in their position of responsibility. Who's ethics should we be questioning? Are you a shareholder? Do you own shares in Lehmen or AIG or whoever is next? Are you still supporting a "bonus" for those execs? Watch and see. The hammer will come down on those who abuse their position. A higher power will prevail. Power to the people!!!

How do people get angry enough to do something like this, even taking into account the "mob mentality"? It must have been a powerful emotion that swept over these men. The problem is not unions, but the lack of true unions. Unions need to be international and egalitarian. What we are seeing is the success of capitalism. The capitalists are doing fine. The workers are fighting over crumbs. We are globalizing ourselves right into serfdom. What else can we expect, with billions of people on a planet with limited resources? The abuse the American work force has been taking from company bosses over the decades always boils over to hostile words not action. Management doesn't fear workers revenge anymore. The auto (union) workers of the 1940"s strikes were brave, take action type of individuals. Who united in force to physically take on greedy management. These people don't exist anymore in America. Workers have become weak slaves to their masters. Management no longer respects the rights of workers. Its either do as we say, accept the wages/benefits we offer or hit the road. All so the wealthy can become more so. American workers do not stick together anymore. They don't want to risk losing their homes, cars, etc. So, out of fear of lossing their jobs, they will do anything management says. And management knows it. You need to make management fear you to get respect, which will get you a decent living wage with benefits. But, this won't happen until the workers unite and pick up the sword. You can talk until you are blue in the face, management doesn't fear words, only action. Most Americans are all talk and no action when it comes to taking on management. They do not fear workers revenge as they once did. Management looks upon the American work force as weak and unwilling to make personal sacrifices to get a decent living wage with benefits. Everyone seems afriad to risk losing their jobs now days. So, management feels it can do as it wishes and the worker will accept whatever is offered. Interesting comments - Its clear that those in favor of killing the CEO have been in the shoes of the workers who were laid off ( and if one reads the article, it says there have already been disagreements between workers and company before this - so this is a result of an escalating environment with no reprieve by the company - if there had been this may not have happened. This country needs something in the middle, between Capitalism and Socialism. Caps on wages, which will stop greed. Everyone should be able to live comfortably on a yearly income of less then $500,000. Above that, greed and corruption take over. Once you reach that amount, the rest goes to government for public use, education, healthcare, rebuilding America's infrastructure, etc. For the Trump types, no more buiding monuments (buildings) to yourself.
